  • Folasade Oyegbola: Welcome to my presentation on my 10-week practicum with Keep Austin Fed! The purpose of my practicum was to explore the leadership and operations of a non-profit that fights food insecurity through rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste. Over the course of the practicum, I learned what it takes to run an organization like Keep Austin Fed, and the impact the non-profit has on the community. This presentation will discuss my goals for the practicum, what I learned, what I accomplished, and what more can be done.

From Jessica Devin - Thank you for giving me an education on food insecurity and food waste. Your commitment to making a difference in this area is admirable. When I worked at H-E-B I saw a lot of waste but I also saw donations to food banks. Education is such an important part of waking people up to this issue. I know that your time at Keep Austin Fed made an enormous difference and your work there was impressive. I appreciate that you discussed collaboration. Collaboration makes the strengths of each organization even stronger. The paradigm shift and awareness that needs to happen will take work but I see that there are people working together to cause change in this area. Thank you!

Hi Jessica, thank you! I would love to work with HEB to increase donations and reduce waste. You make a great point about the paradigm shift. We really need a shift in thinking and habits to make lasting change.

Great job Folassade. Your research is enlightening as to the communities which suffer food insecurities the most. I can see how elderly and students who are on the opposite end of the spectrum in life can suffer. Elderly are often forgotten in many ways, but to know that they are a community which need love in return in the way of food provision is heartbreaking. Students on the other hand after your research enlightens as to how many struggle to get through their journey of a better tomorrow. Finances are a struggle for many students. Like many non-profits who suffer from overstretched resources Keep Austin Fed appears to be blazing the trail to help these communities in need. You offer some great insight on how to assist an overworked director. I hope you're research continues and assist those in the trenches to expand efficiently and effectively. Again, good job!

Thank you! One of my goals is to research food insecurity on college campuses; not just to improve access for students, but also faculty and staff who may also suffer from food insecurity.

Thank you for this informative presentation. Happy to see that there are so many businesses that are food donors. As an ex employee at Trader Joe’s in the DC area I saw first hand how appreciative these programs were to provide for the food insecure communities. It is research like this that will ultimately make a huge impact and help with future improvements. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for watching! I started learning about food insecurity as a volunteer in the DC area. I hope to go back and do work there one day.

Hi Khris, thank you for watching! A real-world perspective was important to me because it is easy to do intellectual and theoretical analysis without considering what actually happens, who is effected, and how they are affected. I hope to continue on this path.

Great idea to review donation patterns. Organizations will benefit from knowing that the summer months have the highest donations. Also useful to know what and how certain demographics use the food and which they use most often. Bright idea 💡

Hi Folasade! Louis Medellin here. I really enjoyed the information provided in your presentation. I must admit, I had not paid much attention to food insecurtiy locally here in Texas. Videos such as yours are a great resource for awareness. Great presentation!

Hi Louis, thank you for watching! Spreading awareness was one of my goals. Food insecurity is a global issue that many do not realize is a problem in their communities. I hope this presentation helps spread awareness.

Hello Folasade, I think your research is super interesting! You were the only one to do a practicum so I was looking forward to learning more about what you did! Keep Austin fed sounds like an amazing resource that helps so many people! Wow you did so much in such a short time! Food donation laws I feel like are so important! You did a great job!

Dr. C posting... Thank you for introducing me to Keep Austin Fed--what an important mission and organization! Lisa Barden, the Executive Director, and the entire KAF team accomplish amazing work. I watched you turn a personal passion into a research-based practicum, during which you contributed to Keep Austin Fed while also learning from KAF. Well done! Question: How has conducting this research practicum impacted you and your future?

    • @ShadeOyegbola
      @ShadeOyegbola 6 месяцев назад

Dr. C, conduction the practicum has reinforced my commitment to work in the food insecurity field. It also made me realize the potential roles I can play and different opportunities that are available. One of the best things I will takeaway from the practicum is developing my leadership style and growing confidence in my personal mission.

Wow! This was such a great presentation and I have been interested since I first heard your topic on the practicum, I'm so happy to see the end result. Any 503 organization that heavily relies on donors lives and dies by those donors so it was very interesting to hear you discuss the donation patterns, and I hope that non-profits are able to use that data to strengthen their own donor foundation. Taking your practicum and making sure it stays data driven was very impressive!

I love that you went a different route than everyone else, and did a practicum. Being able to see firsthand and working towards solving a global issue is a great thing to do and I really enjoyed watching your presentation. This presentation just makes me more aware of how I should not be wasteful with my food and start giving back more to help food insecurities that are probably going on in my neighborhood and community.

That was one of my goals; to reach individual people who were not aware of the issues. We need big companies to make changes, but we also need individual households to make mindset changes. Thank you for watching, Atyana!

Hey Folasade, your practicum is interesting to watch. Food insecurity is an issue. No families should go without any food for a while. Your presentation demonstrated a great deal of awareness and appreciation for what grants can do for people.

Hi Anthony! I agree, no families should go without food. We have the resources to feed everyone, but we have yet to make food insecurity a thing of the past.
