    For those looking at this video in the future. The 5950x doesn't have a gpu, you'd need a cpu with a "G " at the end for the onboard hdmi to work. Its the platform, not the mobo. All 7XXX amd cpus have a gpu onboard.

      Can you run VM's on a cpu that doesn't have integrated graphics?

    • @dbzssj4678
      @dbzssj4678 2 месяца назад +2

      @@MostlyDrew yes, with any dedicated GPU. You just need a display output for setup. I guess you can remove the GPU after, if your vm's are controlled through the network.

    • @Gametherapist

      I was about to start typing. If you don't know hardware, none of the regular Ryzen CPUs have an iGPU, so your HDMI port won't work. Only the "G" variants do. Dunno about EPYC though.

    • @LeopoldoManuelRamirezMena
      @LeopoldoManuelRamirezMena Месяц назад

      Right, what was missing is to add a GPU heheheheh ... well, that wouldn't happen on a real server... this is a pc that is not redundant, but cheap... :D works fine if failover is enabled and you have 3 of the same to run VMs if one fails.

    The 5950X does not have an iGPU, therefore the HDMI Port does not work - the VGA Port on the other hand is powerd by the onboard ASpeed VGA Controller and is tied in with the IPMI Controller.

      Yep, good comment. This is widely known but obviously can catch people out! The G or Pro labelled AMD CPUs are the ones with iGPUs I think.

      I recently found out that on my old server motherboard, it also works on VGA without Dedicated GPU. I was furious why i didn't have any output, after i borrowed older GPU i realised that i can try that VGA and it worked.

      Indeed this is how it works on my Asrock Rack X470D4U IPMI. For anyone who does not want an APU and/or discrete GPU on consumer motherboards, you can get an inexpensive ZOTAC GT710 (PCIe 1x) and just stick in one of your unused 1x slots for VGA output. This is what I did in my second server running a consumer board with a 5950x.

    You experienced one of my biggest problems encountered when building my Proxmox server. The Ryzen CPU's don't support integrated graphics UNLESS it is a G-series CPU like 4600G, 5600G, 5700G. So for me when trying to do the GPU passthrough to my Plex server is impossible as I didn't get a G-Series😥. I see why you went with the Ryzen 9 for high core/thread count, but it does not look like the Ryzen 9's have any G-series available. As of March this year the highest core/thread count you can get in a Ryzen (at least by the search I did) is the Ryzen 7 G-Series which has 8/16.
    Please no one bash me for this comment placed on a well and knowledgable RUclipsr's video, but I did so for the novice users like myself that may come across this video.

    • @pr0jectSkyneT
      @pr0jectSkyneT Год назад

      I actually debated on getting a G series Ryzen CPU as well but ultimately ended up with a 5900x because of the higher thread count but also because the 5000 G series models do not have AV1 hardware encode/decode. I bought an Intel A380 because I use video hardware acceleration for Plex.

    • @JasperSchwinghammer
      @JasperSchwinghammer 9 месяцев назад

      Came here to say this, fairly obvious thing. Ryzen up to the 5000 series does not have a iGPU only in the G series thought that was obvious. The 7000 series has a small GPU integrated into the I/O-die, which means all cpus have basic output. But the GPU is only for office or debugging usecases here, it is not as powerful as the real iGPUs that are with the CPU cores on CPUs that end in G.

    There are many video's about running ones firewall as a VM on proxmox. The one I use at home is Sophos XG which doesn't support 2.5Gb Ethernet, so running it in a VM works and allows me to use the remaining resources for other things (XG home use licensing). There are many vids/tuts on running ones firewall as a VM and their config is suitable to a lab environment. None of them seem to address the proxmox config necessary to connect to the internet for day to day use.
    I'd love to see that.

    Great video!! As a suggestion for a future video I would love to learn more about Proxmox networking and VLANs. I would also like to dive deeper on the fastest way for VMs to talk to each other. Does the traffic all have to flow through a switch or can VMs be connected virtually in Proxmox via a bridge and what is the best practice for that.

    • @matthewdinslage7179
      @matthewdinslage7179 Год назад +1

      This is some what related to your question, but I always like to use a intel NIC with SR_IOV support in my servers. Instead of using a bridge adapter you can split the one network card into multiple virtual network cards that you then can pass directly to the virtual machines. It's not necessary but its a nice feature. Here is a video explaining.

You checked the "Qemu agent" without mentioning why. This is a beginner's tutorial, sorry for the beginner's questions.

    Another tip regarding graphics and proxmox (or Linux in general): NVIDA GPU's aren't well supported by the kernel. There are work arounds, but, if using a higher end CPU w/o onboard graphics, a cheap, dedicated AMD gpu can be purchased on ebay for around $15. Easy solution that doesn't add much cost; you can remove it after installation, or keep it installed if space isn't an issue!

    Regarding the HDMI port on this Mainboard for the Ryzen CPU: I think somewhat all Ryzen since the 1x00 ones have that but there are only a few CPUs that have the IGPU on it! I think these are the G models. You chose a Ryzen 9 5950X which is one that has no IGPU on it. If the IPMI of the Motherboard has some low level graphics on an extra VGA which many "normal" server boards have.

      I do agree with you a 1 TB room OS disk is way to much disk space- which means any ISOs downloaded or uploaded to the proxmox server will be on the I prefer to use 250GB disk for the root OS, then mounting the other drives within some form of RAIS (zfs or other). Having the main drive as a Raid 1 gives some redundancy if his client does not have skills to maintain the host hardware. Jay did not talk about how the other disk were put into a ZFS raid.
      He also stated the dialog was an error box, but it was an informational dialog to let the end user know Enterprise kernel requires a license. This is a very basic starter and recommending to switch over to non-enterprise version was an improvement (over his last video).
      I started using proxmox after watching Jay videos in 2018/2019. During the COVID pandemic (at the start of 2020), I bought a used Dell R420 to be my first proxmox server. Between the video's Jay makes and the other that Tom Lawrence makes, I was able to adapt my previous VMware ESX, WorkStation Pro, and Fusion Pro experiences to what Proxmox offers.
      The proxmox series he refereed is good, but I found myself having to go deeper into the documentation to enable other feature: 1) mounting NFS directory via my truenas server, 2) doing SSL certs via ACME, 3) creating a simple powershell script to load the windows QEMU Guest agent/drives (he did it the old school way mounting the CD and having windows search the whole disk and installing the agent), 4) having LXC directly access mounted NFS disk space (from the proxmox host), etc
      I wish he would provided a written article along with the video for these series. On other series he shares some details (to save you from typing). Seeing how he can write a book for Ubuntu, I was hoping to read similar articles from his RUclips vlogs.
      the linux.video links in the proxmox series redirect to the main website not to the episode on youtube.

    I am confused, in a older video about Proxmox you said to not use the No-Subscription repository and now you say to use it? I wonder if these updates can create bugs?

    This guide seems really helpful but I can just tell this man is more of a software guy 😅. I worry about the lack of knowledge for integrated graphics in CPUs for someone parting out more professional/intense hobby machines as a business.

    Hello Jay,
    Thanks for a great video!
    Once I'm done with my current project, Promox will be amongst the first things that I'll tackle. 🙂
    Do you have a video on setting up networking in Linux, e.g. own DNS/DHCP? I could not find one. 😞
    There are many others by other people, but you explain soooo much better than other people. 🙂

    I wonder how I could backup the server itself.
    Is there any known good way to backup a ProxMox Server, or even the cluster?

    Curious what power usage you get. I just built a server with a Rosewill RSV-L4000U, Ryzen 7900, Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX, 2- TEAMGROUP Elite Plus DDR5 64GB (2x32GB) 4800MHz PC5-38400 CL40 Unbuffered Non-ECC , Intel OPTANE SSD P1600X Series 118GB M.2, EVGA SuperNOVA 450 GM, 80 Plus Gold 450W, Fully Modular, ECO Mode with DBB Fan. ARCTIC P12 PWM PST (5 Pack) - 120 mm Case Fan, PWM Sharing Technology (PST). A iStarUSA Sliding Rail Kit TC-RAIL-26. A THIRDREALITY Zigbee Smart Plug with Energy Monitoring to see the energy stats on Home Assistant.
    I will be using this video to setup Proxmox then move over Home Assistant and my webserver. We will see how it works.

    Hi! Nice video! I have a question: How did you manage to give the VM internet access? Did you set up IP tables in the Proxmox console or something similar? I’m asking because I configured the VM’s network as you mentioned, using vmbr0, but I still don’t have internet access.

    Proxmox Stand Alone PC server with antiX DM that is also debian based Or ICE WM instead of accessing Proxmox from another device via a web base GUI? Just want to run communication apps from within vm & containers? How much for such a tutorial Jay? 🤣I'm old & want to do this before I die🤣🤣Found the wiki but its' caveat is that you can't upgrade proxmox afterwards, there has to be a work around that??

    You need a g series Ryzen with built in gpu or external gpu. You don’t have a gpu to run that HDMI port

    There is a bug in Debian 12 and clevis-luks. When you create a Debian 12 VM with LUKS and installed clevis-luks, the VM will not boot. However, it works on Debian 11 or Debian 12 that got upgraded from Debian 11.

    Ryzen 9 5950X does not have integerated GPU, therefore onboard HDMI port will not work. You will need an external GPU for that.

    Does Proxmox use a built-in smtp server setting? You need to type in an email address during the setup but I wonder how Proxmox can use it if we don't fill in an smtp server somewhere.
