  • Here I show how I make a step notch from scratch for a 51 Chevy pickup that has a speedway 4 bar kit installed in the rear. I also make some custom airbag brackets to get the truck laying on the ground.

Have the drive shaft come off your transmission to the back of the cab. Put a carrier bearing on a bracket just below the back of the cab. then put a drive shaft from the carrier bearing to the rear end. (Pinion gear.) That way you won't have to Do any cutting to make it work and look professional. I wish i could help. My job was building driveshafts when i was young.

I had a 3/4 ton truck (it might even have been a one ton) like this back in the '60's. It had only a 6 Cylinder in it with a one barrel carburetor. It was a 4 speed on the floor from the factory with 1st being a Low "low" first gear that could pull out tree stumps but couldn't go any faster than 5 mph (You Pulled the shifter over to the extreme left and up and if it didn't go in you knew it because it was reverse) . I usually started in 2nd gear (where 1st would be on a normal 3 speed). It had an 8 lug wheels and 16.5 tires and was geared so low it couldn't go any faster than 60 MPH. It was so high it could go through brush and mud like a 4x4.

briquetaverne, that low gear was intented for the hay fields. You could put it in low first , you could get out and pick-up bales, while just idling and pick-up bales by yourself. This i know because we used to do it back in the day. That was some hard ass work when your only 12 years old... Done that shit for years& I hated it.... That old 1949 Ford flathead & flatbed had a lot of field miles, not to many hwy miles.Loved that old Ford. Wished we would have kept it.Pa-paw sold it along time ago...That was the good old days. I'm sure you remember the good old days too.

I have seen them mounted so many ways and I can't say which is perfect. I don't miss the bed space... clear off the wall, my buddy John L. does the old internationals as he calls himself mr international.... since he is a millionaire, he has to much time on his hands and at nearly eighty years of age, that it self is commendable, does these. I used to do all his welding till I got crippled. I think between alaska and texas as he goes there in the winter, he has around five thousand different types/styles of those old rigs including that rattly old four cylinder diesels. His favorite is the 56 jubilee and he must have thirty of them because they had cowboy cabs and wood beds.. to each his own.

Nice work. I like the way you show the design tweaks and trial-and-error that goes into a custom installation.
It might be of interest to show the process of plumbing an entire air ride system. There is a lot of hidden "stuff" that goes into a system like clearance for air lines, compressor location issues and wiring. Even the process of installing the air lines on the bags, without damaging the o-rings, would be of interest to newbies.
