My mum was an art teacher. Back in the 80's her colleague ,Mick, taught art to the prisoners in Strangeways in the evenings. One of the prisoners who he dealt with was in for art forgery (wondering if it might even be this bloke?). Mick also had a connection to the BBC in Manchester. He got a wedding invite from a producer (or director? Someone flash at the time, possibly iirc conected to Coronation Street) and was dismayed at the level of presents on the wedding list as the couple were using it to set themselves up in their new house (washing machine/King size bed etc etc). One thing caught his eye though, an Edwardian watercolour! He decided that he would have a go at painting one of those. He took advice from the forger on how to do this, and with some help from my mother as well on style/technique/composition, produced a painting then set about aging it (lemon juice and heated in a tin in an oven?) a period correct frame bought from a junk shop and nails aged in his garden etc. The couple were delighted with the painting, it was the one present, said Mick, that all the guests seemed to focus on amongst all the expensive stuff and no one seemed to have any doubts about it, not even Mick's wife whom he hadn't let in on the secret. Some months later Mick got a phone call, it was the husband who very apologetically mentioned that he'd been asked to submit something to a charity auction. He explained that since they were still setting up their life together he didn't really have anything suitable apart from the Edwardian watercolour, as much as they'd hate to lose it, would Mick be upset if he donated it? Mick could only agree that it was their's to do with what grey wanted/good cause... and hoped nothing would happen to get him in trouble. He found out later that it was appraised/valued for £500 and sold for £1000
With talent like that... you can literally paint these pieces. Outright tell people you painted it. .... and it would still have value because of your past and the accuracy of your craft. Sometimes forgeries are worth as much or more when a good story is behind it.
He will forge till the day he dies. He forges paintings that he obviously likes personally and has a lot of respect for. I’m sure he is as good as any painter ever was.

So one man has the talent of numerous famous painters but is labelled a forger. He should be praised for being able to do what he can when these other painters are held in such high esteem.
He is a copying machine lol. The idea is already on canvas and all he did was copy paste. Its not as much about painting technique but about the idea itself. The size, the subject, the colors, the shading. Its all there, served on a platter. Its what seperate tattooers from tattoo artists as well. You can pick an image from a book and have any tattooer do an okay job. But if all you have is a simple idea, what you need is an actual tattoo artist to make the idea reality.

The value goes up once the supply is finite. Paint a few then maim your hand. Can't paint any more. Not a great strategy for life but better than being dead.
If i'd had an opotunity to comission a forged piece from him, id like to get one of Rembrandts work. He is professional at what he does, and i think he is able to recreate the tension in the eyes, the feel of the fabrics painted.
Fascinating story to say the least. To replicate a masterwork requires knowledge of technique , medium and color synthesis with no variation to the original. His observational skills in his minds eye transmitted to his hand eye coordination to reproduce every stroke flawlessly are superior. I would suggest purchasing one of his legitimate originals because artists of his caliber are few and far between.
Honestly, with kids throwing food at priceless works of art, we need people like him to forge all of the paintings. It’s probably time that some paintings are kept away from the public like the ones at the French cave

With talent like that... you can literally paint these pieces. Outright tell people you painted it. .... and it would still have value because of your past and the accuracy of your craft. Sometimes forgeries are worth as much or more when a good story is behind it.
The biography 'Britain's No1 Art Forger - The Life of a Cheeky Faker' is out now! Lots of amazing and amusing stories! 4.6* on Amazon and Goodreads.
He will forge till the day he dies. He forges paintings that he obviously likes personally and has a lot of respect for. I’m sure he is as good as any painter ever was.
He only paints legitimate copies these days.... and loves it..... Wonderful tales from Max's life are in his biography... BRITAIN's No1 ART FORGER - THE LIFE OF A CHEEKY FAKER (4.83 stars on Goodreads and 4.6 stars on Amazon).
@@anthonyvalentine4009 oh yea I got that, I’m just saying he will still do forgeries. Not to try and pass off but because he appreciates gifted pieces of art.
Amazing interview!! This was my dream as kid, become an art forger. I paint and I'm quite good at it, but this man pulled off a Caravaggio, and that's in completely different league. Hats off and I demand a series based on this man's life ASAP.
I like to see him paint an original. Fantastic artist.
I've always liked artists who can turn their hand to any style.

What a legend this old gentleman is! Skilled in art, a crook with a pride, he knows how good he is and he is an embodiment of all the soulful English of a bygone era. Do you miss the old days, sir? So do i, so do i....

I told u what this is.
Remenber???
U have no excuse
I live in the US and I miss those days.
Fucking excellent. He’s forgotten more stories than he’ll ever tell, what a fantastic bloke and what a fantastic 15 minute snapshot ( or should I say pen and ink drawing) of a fascinating life.

Wow, this dude met the Kray twins. What a great storyteller!
I could hear him talk all day what a absolute legend
The Caravaggio copy is very impressive. Caravaggio used to paint using optics, that is he used convex mirrors to reflect the image he wanted to paint on to the canvas, a character at a time. That is how he got the amazing phot realistic look.

Running away from Ronnie Kray might just have been the cleverest thing this lad has ever done.
yes I agree but both were quite good and polite so respect to them. would love to know what happened to the painting 🖼 max brandrett
Wonderful. Wonderful. The art world deserves everything it gets. Shame he can’t still pull the wool! Loved it.
This was brilliant! Max is a natural. It also highlights just how odd the law can be in assessing what is a crime and what is a work of art, and sheer brilliance. When a person follows their passion they're truly living. Max is one of those people, one with a real gift. Thanks for filming this inspirational interview.

It's unfortunate that no one bothered to nurture the talent he had by sending him to a art school, but it's nice he acknowledged Bernados and made money for them
I loved doctor barnardos children's home my choice to go down that road. Max
Yes Barnados made a killing that day they sold 3 Rembrandts 5 Turners 2 Constables and a Devinchi to an anonamous American Bidder
I've been to art school - one thing they don't do is nurture talent lol!
He doesnt need a art school... He would eat them alive ...😃😂 hes a free soul...
had a early Christmas card from Dorchester nick from the screws said happy Christmas max wish to were here. God bless max the forger.
Straight up, he's a genius, can only imagine how amazing how own pieces of artwork look.

What a legend. I could listen to him for hours.
I always have a soft spot for art forgers and cat burglars.
Max's biography 'BRITAIN'S No1 ART FORGER - THE LIFE OF A CHEEKY FAKER' is out now!
Me too. They only hurt the rich and that's only in their pocket where they can afford it.
Same. I’m glad I’m not the only one.
What? Surely you are joking. Who could possibly have a soft spot for a person who would steal a cat???
Preposterous!
wtf just stop
He honestly seems like a pretty cool guy to chill with. Like he's just a fun dude.

The guy’s a genius. I bet he’s got a few good books in him. Takes someone special to do what he’s done with his life.

Hard to believe.
Look at his eyes.

Look at the shape of his head.

A netflix series of art forgers would be dope 👌
I loved this guy in Eastbound & Down!
“Can you feel the tension in the air right now? I know I can…
I can feel it, down in my plums…
Getting a nice blueish hue.
Gettin’ ready to take ‘em to a farmers market!”
“Donna! Let! The Boy! Paint!”
"You win some you loose some" best line ever
I love the little details he added to the paintings that isn't in the original. Like the clock in the Coolidge painting 16:02 shows another time
Well done finding that little detail 👏

If I was wealthy I'd hire him to create works for my home. Just a bunch of paintings of subjects that interest me, each in the style of one of my favorite artists.
What an interesting man. I could sit and listen to him all day.
This has got to be made into a good old Brit flick, with Jude Law as Max and Bill Nighy as the Sammy Cohen. Come on someone - make it!
Absolutely loved this interview. So interesting. What a talent to have
congratulations Max love your book Britain’s No. 1 Art Forger Max Brandrett:

if he was born 200 years ago he might have a chance in the art world, because the real value is not in the skill, but in the fact that you are dead.
The value goes up once the supply is finite. Paint a few then maim your hand. Can't paint any more. Not a great strategy for life but better than being dead.
now THIS is the most interesting man in the world.
Need a documentary & film about this man.
If i'd had an opotunity to comission a forged piece from him, id like to get one of Rembrandts work. He is professional at what he does, and i think he is able to recreate the tension in the eyes, the feel of the fabrics painted.
"Have you ever worked with elephants"

Fascinating story to say the least. To replicate a masterwork requires knowledge of technique , medium and color synthesis with no variation to the original. His observational skills in his minds eye transmitted to his hand eye coordination to reproduce every stroke flawlessly are superior. I would suggest purchasing one of his legitimate originals because artists of his caliber are few and far between.
This dude is a genius, that's an amazing talent he has.
I would love to meet Max, what a fabulous Man.
What a ledge!
He's like a character in a Guy Ritchie flick!
Honestly, with kids throwing food at priceless works of art, we need people like him to forge all of the paintings. It’s probably time that some paintings are kept away from the public like the ones at the French cave
This was great fun to watch. I used to be a fan of the Art forger Tom Keating when I was a kid .he was a very different type of man but had the same talent. . I love fakers of any kind they show up the pretentions of the know-it-alls. I do hope this guy writes his autobiography. That old world of London characters fascinates me.
hi max saying hello I worked with Tom keating in 1967 met in club Row then met Sammy fantastic days. book out max brandrett Britain's number one art forger. god bless max
No telepromter or a script, fluent as river. Literally, the way he tell the tale, I can see it.
i like this mans honesty they should make a movie on his life
This man would have some awesome dinner table stories.
Never ever heard of him and art works, don't care about but
after watching this vid, he is cool and would have some awesome life

No need for that, they have photo printers... Just paste it to a canvas and you can't tell in a movie.
