Why it's tough for women to work in construction, and how that can change

  • Women only make up less than 10% of the national construction workforce.
Reporter Kathryn Brenzel interviewed dozens of women who work on both construction sites and as executives at some of the city’s largest construction management firms to get an idea of why the lack of diversity persists, what challenges women working in the industry endure, and how management firms can help create a more inclusive environment.
Special thanks to Kim Neuscheler at Turner Construction for the construction tour at Memorial Sloan Kettering’s David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care.

Respect to you but that is the point really. Some people really think that there needs to be a push for diversity in places where it just doesn't make sense.
      Like construction.
No offense, you're a strong woman but I'm just some random dude and I just worked on a construction site and did exactly that, I carried 150lbs concrete plates for hours. I'm just some random dude and I did something that would send the average woman to the ER.
      The AVERAGE woman.
That doesn't mean women should be kept from working in construction. If you can handle the weight, do it 🤷🏻‍♂️
I think there are real problems that should be addressed, like the ever spying NSA for example and all the shit stirring that is going on right now but what do I know.

I interpretted it as women have to work harder to make up for the lack of strength... theres a chick that works as a plasterer and she mentioned that she cant carry 2 bags at a time, so she has to carry one bag and bolt to make up for lost time.

I actually think that average woman is more diligent when it comes to physical labor and improvement of living conditions and attention to detail than the average man. Most men i know would live and sleep in a dirty hole, never clean or improve anything if it was their own free choice. Many male workers in construction industry encourage recklessness and stupidity as well as ignore mistakes and promote disregarding safety.
The fact that machines, tools, building material packaging etc. are all made one size makes the job difficult for anyone - while the concept of construction(imo) is to use and craft instruments that are appropriate for the individual to use to make buildings without physically straining themselves.

As a woman, I am very interested in construction work. However when I see certain comments that men make it's hard not to be discouraged. Of course I can't lift heavy because I've never been in the field but i would like to.
It's not that women don't want to work in these fields, it's that there's fear of the unknown due to all these stereotypes and cultures. And that's what they're saying needs to change. Women aren't trying to take your jobs and no one is saying we can lift more than men.

    • @dustinthewind3925
      @dustinthewind3925 2 года назад +14

The word construction is a blanket term imo. Too many different trades. Some trades aren't suitable for even the average man, others are very technical and far less labour intensive.
Just do your homework and figure out witch trade suits YOU. I've worked with a few women in my trade that were only there because they were female to make the company look good on paper... They refused to pick up a tool and were praised (but only lasted for that one job). One was a woman who was my foreman for atleast a year, she knew her shit and wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty.
Show a thick skin, a willingness to learn, show up early and pull your weight. Man or woman, that's all it takes.

Women have their place in the industry, we don't see female concrete workers, simply because most aren't physically able to do the work, just like we don't see most 50 year olds doing concrete work. However the more finesse trades, drywall finishers, painters, electricians, finish carpenters women do quite well. The biggest reason we don't have more women in the trades is simply most women aren't interested in do it. Just like the majority of men don't want to be a florist, nurse, hair stylist. Is it tough or is that in general women don’t want to do hard manual labor? As a woman in 2023, it’s almost guaranteed that we’ll get a job over a man in any of these fields. Most of these companies are opening their doors to women and minorities. It’s just that most women are not interested in this kind of labor. Personally I am going into the field, but I’m a girly girl and never ever thought I would. And I’m still weary about it 😅 I just think we need to stop perpetuating this false point of view that women are not the majority in hard labor jobs because “sexism”. Women are not paid less than men because “sexism”. Women are usually paid less because of hours worked, maternity leave, wanting to be with her children more, not wanting to work crazy hours. While men work the most and the hardest, especially when they have kids they want to provide so much more. *But also women these days are starting to make way more money than men. And women are not getting married and are not keeping their children. So hours worked will be probably more and I can totally see the “wage gap” evening out as more women have to work and decide to not have a family.* We as women can’t keep bringing up these arguments while simultaneously having boatloads of opportunities that we really just don’t want. Ask yourself. Do you and most of the women you know really want to be hanging from telephone poles, building bridges, doing whatever in sewers, out in the middle of the ocean on an oil rig? I bet 80% of you just said no. If we’re all adults, we should understand how the real world works

    • @mewe1717

I do agree in some of the points youve made but the issues here isnt that we need to bring more women into the force labor, its the fact that those women in the force labor already get discriminated against for beign a minority, and while it is easy to join other fields, there are women who want to do this sort of thing or are interested in it, but because of the huge bias that it leads to working here then it tends to be a lor more steriotipical than in most other works. I wont argue anything about the wage gap bc its not really a field of expertise here tho, however i am inclined to lean on what their saying because the women in the video are the ones I know share the expirience to some extent.

See, I might agree with, but sexism still exists. Those ideas that keep women down in their place as 'weak care taker' didn't disappear when equal rights was passed and women were enabled to work in the American unions in the 1970s. That wasn't that long ago. How long do you suspect such a staple in human society will take to undo? Afterall some countries still bar women that right at all.
The reason women don't take those jobs is because the moment we are born, girls are lucky(at least in my country) to get an education and not be married off to the highest bidder. We are taught to be weaker. To never lift the heavy things, to never get dirty, to never explore, to never think. So we're immediately disadvantaged and it carries us everywhere we go.
Even other women try to pretend that sexism is over and nothing is bad in the world like that anymore. But even though I worked for six years as foreman of my shop(masonry) I constantly had people try to 'help' me carry a bucket(about 40kg) and completely interrupt what I was doing, then they get all offended when I tell them "If I need help, I'll ask you. If I don't ask you, I don't need it." "Just trying to help" Isn't helping. It's reaffirming this idea that girls are weak, useless creatures that exist only to create baby and be pretty doll for man to play with. At least in my culture that's what we're taught. I live in America now, but the mind is still the same here. It didn't change and it won't change while people try to pretend it doesn't. It's like keeping a room dark so you can't see an cockroach. They're still there even if you don't see them. You have to turn on the light to scurry them away, and it start by acknowledging your own bias. Thank you and I do wish you much success in your career.

But they have to make videos like these because most women couldn't give a fuck less about construction. Most men who work construction would much rather do something else. I mean even in this video that woman just seems to be giving orders. they seem to prefer managerial positions. Construction men are generally good people, they are rather supportive. Look at a country like india in the rural areas where u find 50 year old women lifting weights just like men, maybe not 50 bricks at a time but atleast 5 bricks at a time. What's misogynistic? Please be clear because saying women are far interior to men physically is not misogynistic. Saying women who do go into construction and put their body under strain is not good for health (it's not good for either but alot more so for women) and can cause issues in conceiving etc is not misogynistic. It is facts and I will not be part of a system that gives false ideals to women and at the same time devalue the superiority of men in this field. Such as I would not allow the same thing when women are by default superior to men in another field. None of this is misogynistic and if you think it is then you have a problem with reality.

    • @thawillyfish
      @thawillyfish 3 года назад +3

@@Lutestick I work in construction myself. I am in FAR better condition physically than the men I work with because I take care of my body by stretching, doing yoga and generally maintaining my fitness by making sure I address muscle imbalances from repetitive stress.
The guys I work with do none of those things and allow themselves to degenerate physically.
I take less time off than they do for injuries, I don't waste people's energy complaining about my aches and pains (because I have none). I don't cost my employers money in workers compensation claims.
I also do the exact same work as they do with no extra help, as it's very likely you'll say that next. That's usually the line to follow.
I am the average female construction worker.
I've had no problem conceiving. That is an insidious yet silly myth that seems to plague women and really speaks to m en's general lack of knowledge around female anatomy.
So in light of all that, if your comments still don't smack of misogyny to you then you need to get your eyeballs over to a dictionary and read the definition of misogyny. That's a good place for you to start.

    • @thawillyfish
      @thawillyfish 3 года назад +5

@@Lutestick Also I have to point out that your statement about "strain" being bad for the body is rather ham-handed. "Strain" implies that your musculoskeletal system is not ready to handle the load you're putting it under, whether that means you're putting it under too much stress for too much TIME, or just too much weight for a short amount of time, or any combination of the two.
The main thing to consider here is that all bodies adapt to stress, but the limiting factors for both men and women is recovery. Under that umbrella is rest, abundant sleep, adequate macronutrient intake but especially protein, and active recovery like stretching, light exercise like walking or restorative yoga. Yes, strain *can* be bad for bodies, but a more representative way to look at that is: putting a body under a load it's not prepared for, or able to *recover* sufficiently from is 100% bad for it. This is basic sport science that applies to both men and women the same way.
Now for the sex differences, stay with me until the end where I will tie this all together. The main physiological difference between men and women is that in the two weeks before a woman sheds her uterine lining there is what's called the high hormone phase. The catabolic hormone progesterone increases in preparation to break down said uterine lining. This catabolism is unfortunately not confined to the uterus, it does lead to some muscle breakdown. This part of the reason women have less muscle mass- the anabolic (muscle gaining) part of our physiology is suppressed for roughly half of the cycle. Not only that, but in the last week of the cycle blood plasma goes down 8% as a result of redirection and loss of fluids , leading to decreased recovery and capacity for output. Fortunately, the solutions to these problems are really pretty easy.
For the muscle breakdown: increased protein intake above the men's recommendations, and timeing. Msg me if someone wants specific macros. Timing for women after exercise is 30 minutes to get a large dose of protein, and 1 - 1.5 hour for a full meal and hydration. Men have 1 hour. Snacking works well in industrial settings.
For the decreased blood plasma: increase salt intake AND fluid intake. The key here is that you actually WANT to retain fluids!
Back to things that apply to both men and women with no amendments. Three other things that are important to consider when thinking about whether or not someone who is generally healthy is physically able to do a task.
1)Connective tissue takes roughly 3 months to adapt to stress under adequate recovery circumstances.
      2) The difference between a short period of stress (a single workout) and a long period of stress (a day of work with minimal breaks, a triathlon, ironman race)
      3) Muscle takes a few days to a week to adapt to a single stress event ( as opposed to repeated, daily stress)
A quick and dirty illustration: a person working in an office for 10 years gets very sick of working in an office. They decide to start in construction as a labourer (where most people have to start). They did no training outside of work to prepare themselves, their muscles and connective tissue (musculoskeletal system) are without a doubt not adapted to the stresses of repeatedly shovelling, lifting, sweeping, bending, reaching etc. for 8-10 hours per day and only having a maximum of 2 days on the weekend to recover, when they should ideally have 3-4 days interspersed throughout the week as a beginner. This person is at a high risk for injury.
To avoid this scenario the office jockey should have started slow with some kind of mix of weightlifting and plyometric exercise, and ramping it up until the workload in their workouts is equivalent to a full day of labouring (doesn't have to be 8 hours of workout, a higher intensity than the job for a shorter time will do it too).
BUT!!! Here's the darndest thing!!! If these ideal conditions aren't met, still the human body is remarkably resilient and it will eventually adapt, male or female! It might be very painful, (yes, you guessed it, male or female) but it will do it because the body doesn't know it's just a job.
The body doesn't differentiate between stresses. Running from a predator, hunting for its meal, farming, construction stresses are all the same to our bodies. The body will do whatever it takes to overcome and adapt to stay alive. The cost to not prepare for any of these stresses is paid for by your long term health and longevity.
The only thing if a woman- if we looked at a woman in this scenario- would have to do differently than a man to make absolutely sure she didn't "strain" herself (meaning no cost to her long term health and longevity) is to make sure she fuels herself with more protein and electrolytic fluids during her luteal phase- the two weeks before her period starts. That's it. Provided she's otherwise healthy she is up to the job, though for either sex it always takes time to build up your musculoskeletal system.
Reiteration at the risk of redundancy, she still can adapt to the stress of a physical job even if she doesn't prepare beforehand and adjust her nutrition to her menstrual cycle, but it might hurt. This really doesn't change much from men to women. Being physically untrained for a job increases your risk for injury, full stop. You may say next: Women have more strength to gain before they are ready to perform such jobs. The average sheet of drywall is 57 lbs. The max lift for most union construction jobs is 50-80lbs. A sack of dry concret is 50lbs. I can carry two, by the way. I didn't have to train for that haha. Wet concrete is 150lbs per cubic foot. Not huge weights to either men or women. My point here is that it doesn't matter that men have double the upper body strength because as long as you can lift 100lbs (again, children can deadlift that weight) you can carry 50lbs repeatedly without much risk for injury.
Please refer to Dr. Stacy Sim's research on sex differences in sport for more.
And finally, to be absolutely, perfectly crystal clear about "What is misogynistic", since you asked so nicely:
      - Your commitment to ignorance of female physiology AND basic anatomy is misogynistic.
      - Your unwillingness to concede to any of the points made in this video is misogynistic.
      - Your commitment to stating something as "facts" when there is no basis for it, particularly when it pertains to whether or not women should be accepted in an industry is misogynistic.

Not because they are women. I don't care how much prior experience you have, you will not get taken seriously until you earn the respect of the people you work with. You cry "sexual harassment" - but that's not everywhere, and where it exists you have a legal recourse. However, instead of complaining. Build it, create it, from scratch. From the ground up. Build, build, build. Take the injuries, embrace the tools, invent new machines. Build, create. Stop asking for others to invite you in, and make the world you desire through dedication. Put in the hours, choose vocation above all other things, including so called "work-life" balance.. forget that. Do not ask for State handouts, in fact campaign for deregulation.
Feel sad for the lost lives, and hardships, and then battle on.
Do what men have done. Earn it. And only if other men try and prevent you from achieving your dreams, clobber them with lawsuits.
In the end, it is possible. However, I think you'll find that less women will personally choose a life in construction. Perhaps those of you that earn it, will shape the industry to be more appealing. But that's up to you. It's not the proper role of government.
Put it this way, outside of construction there are inventors. Look at the history of men that dedicate to trying to solve problems others didn't even know existed. No one can have a monopoly on a market that doesn't exist. So where are the waves of women inventors? There are a few that have stood above the rest, whose names you may not have even taken the time to get to know. And they achieved in much harder times than you know today.
So if you want it, invent, create, build, and give your life for these goals. Men have done this and most of them have failed, but they keep on in their multitudes. And other men build on their accomplishments, and so it goes on.
One last point. I hear a tone of victimhood in your voice. That's failure before one starts. Think and know what you want. Ignore what others say and act on your own mind. But most of all, do it because you want it more than anything else you'll ever want. That it's your highest value. It will only take a handful of you to achieve that and make a difference to the rest. But for a handful to emerge, statistically there ought to be multitudes trying and most will fail.
That _is_ the price men have paid. Often with their lives. Competing against other men that wanted it more, and that were more able.
    Tough picture ain't it?

Well said mate! Women never stop complaining or patting themselves on the back. Standards & requirements have been lowered in many industries for women to enter them. I agree when you say about starting from scratch do the work & earn you position. They complain constantly about most things men do but never start something from scratch they just want men to make the changes so they can enjoy the fruit they never worked for.
Women in sport is a perfect example, instead of just playing sport and earning your profile & making your sport sustainable they pull out the victim card & want the same money that men make but don't generate the same as men? Allow men to be their mentors and learn from them because they did build our cities and houses. One day when I’m the one in charge nobody will question it, and if they do then I’ll just dust it off.
Men give each other shit all the time. I’m sensitive and that’s part of being loaded with estrogen instead of testosterone... but I don’t let it dictate my day to day.
I obviously don’t stand for sexual harassment but I give it right back! Nobody disrespects me twice on a job site cause I stand up for myself and make them feel like losers... there’s always going to be banter, and there’s no reason for me to put up with anyone’s shit and vice versa!!
I’m all about equity, and equal opportunity. But we have to work for it.
Equal opportunity doesn’t mean equal outcome. “The best man wins “ and that’s not only directed towards people with a dick and balls. It’s whoever has the balls to get to the top!
Generalizing women for all this shit drives me insane. They ruin if for the rest of us who just want to work.

I’ve had a couple guys come to work for me as a residential frame carpenter claiming to have gone to school for carpentry, and frankly couldn’t even use a tape measure correctly. If you want a job doing carpentry so bad I suggest you go to a housing development near you and look for a frame carpentry site. You don’t need an education, don’t need to fill out an application, they will pay you in cash, and will most likely hire you on the spot. In general men are more interested in things and women are more interested in people, this is why more men want to be in construction and more women want to be nurses etc.
If hispanic women got paid that much less for the same quality of work and the same amount of hours then any company who just employed hispanic women would have a 28.3% advantage on labour cost than a company that just employed white men, that is almost the entire profit margin for most companies.
On average men have about 13% more upper body muscle mass than women of the same weight and about 10% more lower body muscle mass. This puts women at a major disadvantage when it comes to hard labour jobs where lifting heavy things is a big part of the job.
People are not chess pieces you can just move around, in the economics of any industry there is no such thing as a solution, only trade offs. By forcing one narrative you will create another problem often bigger than the one solved.

The only people who need to be licensed are the general contractors and project managers, but the actual construction workers don't, and it's why so many illegals are easily employed in this field. What is making it difficult for women to break into this field is that you have to be physically strong. It's easier for a man to work with big machinery, heavy wood, bricks, cinder blocks than it is for a woman. There are women who are strong, don't get me wrong, I know, I am one of them.
