Garry's Mod was indeed heavily reliant on Half Life 2 as a base for its entire success. Its role as a physics based sandbox was a niche that had not yet been fulfilled to the degree Garry's Mod managed to. However, it is important to note that Garry's Mod is a *physics based* sandbox, only being such because Half Life 2 was a *physics based* game. Valve is known for pushing only the latest and most innovative game ideas in their flagship titles, which at the time physics was that new and bright future for games that Half Life 2 sought to explore. However, physics has long passed the front of innovation and Valve is looking for new ideas to expand upon. For that reason, there never will be another Half Life title where physics is the center of gameplay, and as such you can't have a Garry's Mod 2 based on a title which does not exist and will not exist. Half Life Alyx is that new Half Life title, it pushes the ability of games by expanding to be the greatest VR title so far, its just not accepted as that because some people can either not play it or it is not a physics based / nostalgic game which the other Half Life titles occupy. I agree Half Life Alyx does not have the same feel as the other titles, but that is because it is a new game exploring an entirely new medium which can never feel the same as platform shooters. If you want to play a game like Garry's Mod, you can just play Garry's Mod. A new coat of paint on the same experience will never be fulfilling, and for the people expecting Sbox to be Garry's Mod 2 are only dumbing down its potential to be an inferior modernized version of an existing game. For Sbox to succeed, it should be encouraged and supported to do something entirely new.
if i recall correctly, Facepunch was given the engine but if they wanted to use valve's assets they had to pay a % cut of the overall revenue.. for each valve game that they took assets from . I think the overall reason for this is becasue valve wants facepunch to stand on its own leg and create something of their own instead of relying on valve. also im pretty sure that they are intentionally trying to make it as far away from half life as possible, considering the overall aesthetic and the horrible sausage characters. Also its important to remember that valve as a company is getting old, like gabe just reached 60 years old and many of the employees are also pretty old.. doing online games is many magnitudes easier than creating a believable singleplayer experience and most of their success is from this market (multiplayer). like both half life games were kinda considered failures (by valves standards) even if many people loved them
The "beans" as eligible characters in the game is called Terry (he has neither a gender nor a certain ethnicity or anything, he is just a character that serves as a placeholder and as a main character if you want, at the same time). And they are one of the S&Box mascots (I don't know if there are more officially), I think the other two are realistic humans with different skin and hair tones (in fact, one of them has no hair on his head, he's bald) , that right now I don't remember their official names... in the future you will be able to choose or add your own skins or characters to choose from... there are people who are trying to make imports or their own creations to add.
I’ve had the game for a couple weeks. I can’t see it ever being successful like gmod. No steam workshop, no half life props, roblox like game modes rather than servers. I heard copyright will also be enforced in their proprietary workshop. Shame Valve gave Facepunch the Source 2 SDK first because they wasted it on this.
1:39 I don't know what you mean, you said you wanted "a normal human bean", and you got one. Make up your mind! Also, I think it's better if this game creates its own assets. Gmod was fun because of the HL2 assets, but you can't catch lightning in a bottle twice. This way, the mod can actually stand on its own, without being tethered to an aging game. It can do its own thing, and the beans are part of that. They add character.
I agree with last commenter. Even if Facepunch wants S&box to have its own aesthetic, or the skeleton of one, these models are just ugly and unappealing. They add nothing.
i feel like i am getting old. when i first saw S&Box i thought "Gmod 2" like many before, and you and many people say: "its really not" which does not have to be bad, but its the same framework of gmod, but i feel that you never have any of the data. all the files are serverside stuff and if one day the servers are done, you couldn't sit down and make a nice wire creation out of boredom on your own because you need to load into some gamemode browser that 404s on you. the idea of data mortality (the death of a game) or "abandonware" makes me angry and that the thing i look up to seems so tailored to online play just makes me uneasy. gmod wasn't perfect but it had the formula down methinks.
gmod started as a way to shit around in the source engine but what we all ended up finding was a public browser of different gamemodes that download instantly-- each tuned slightly different there were a lot of unique gmod modes that i wish were drawn out into full titles
Garry made a point to not add half life assets to s&bot because it would allow valve to take an extra 25% cut on royalty for the game and it was too much for him to be willing to agree too.
majority of people iv talked to who have access to S&Box, say theyll stay with Gmod. and about 75% I talked to after explaining that its not Gmod 2, it cant port stuff like maps over 1:1, and DarkRP or the like of it wont be present, that means all the RP gamemodes wont be there, and IP protection so starwars, harry potter, Halo, ect wont be present. because donations cant be pocketed. ... say theyll stay on Gmod.

The bean models are just the official supported models, the customizability the game modes enable allow the creators to put any model they desire as the character model.
I hope Terry will become I widely beloved character in the internet, after S&Box releases. Terry plushes will soon hit the market. Btw, Terry is the bean characters that you described.
@@selectionn they will make it to release and the game won't flop. The only condition for the game to flop is if developers wont want to develop for it. And currently no one wants to stop
I agree, the beans are a bad choice. Also, it's not a "you" problem with how long things load. It's straight up a design problem. Trying to put everything on "le cloud" is a terrible idea. Locally hosting and keeping is waaay better and always will be, even with gigabit internet.
S&Box feels so... pitiful. Like, literally everyone would love it if just Garry's Mod was put on Source 2. But he goes and makes this weird bean person game with out of place assets, no art style, and the only real content all being community made.
The only thing I'm excited about, is making animations and machinimas in S&Box. Like how you make animations in SFM and machinimas in Gmod. S&Box is not just a game, it's a content creating machine.
I think the reason why you don't see Half Life props is because Gmod was a mod for Half Life 2 so of course it would include HL2 props, once Valve had officially published Gmod, they were probably okay with it using their assets. This time, I think Valve only licensed the engine but didn't allow the use of their newer assets from HL: A.
@@ninjacat230 No? They weren't even using Source 2 until last year. They can use those assets but they don't want because Valve apparently wants more money for that
I think, many people don't realize s&box is not a mod, it's a stand alone game running on source, that's why it doesn't have all the HL:A stuff, Garry said so at some point; S&box is not a GMod sequel, it is its own thing
there aren't a lot of fully done games within sandbox. people would need to make one first. though there's already several games that are in a playable state. so, at the release day there won't be many fun games.
even with s&box being development and i also highly doubt it will get popularity like its predecessor, gmod will still be my favourite sandbox game, watching those 2010s gmod videos back then, led me getting gmod where i have hours of fun from the addons, still arguably an iconic game even for a decade old game
A few notes: 1 - Regarding the download speed, I think it might be a client-side thing. I'm not sure what your download/upload speeds are, but I have horrifically poor internet and the time it takes for me to download a gamemode, map or asset are pretty much on-par with the times you mentioned in the video. 2 - I'm surprised how few people mention this, but one of S&Box's biggest problems right now is that, because it's still in heavy development, it's easy for gamemodes, scripts, shaders, etc to just break. I got my hands on a S&Box key recently and was super excited to try some gamemodes I heard about long ago, especially some of Eagle One Development's early stuff, only to find out that a lot of old content doesn't exist anymore (likely because years of overhauls to game engine's base code broke a lot of systems that early gamemodes/assets relied upon, and devs decided it was not worth the hassle of fixing it if it's going to be broken again within a month. Admittedly that's speculation on my part, but the point is: old content dead). Hopefully when the public version comes out (and changes to the base engine code become less frequent) gamemodes/maps/assets will have a longer shelf-life, but until that happens most of S&Box can only be experienced in-the-moment.
I get why your confused by some of the decisions Facepunch made during the video. I i highly would recommend at some point going through Garry's blog where he explains why some of those decisions were made, like why the Terry character models are the main models of the game (even tho they plan to also add realistic ones now) or why they aren't using the steam workshop anymore.
The whole cloud based download addon on demand system seems great on paper but I feel it's lacking even in the super modern era where we have high speed internet. Feels like the old Toybox system but 10x slower and I think in the long run, it'll be a serious drag on whatever server hardware they use to host UGC for S&box. It'll probably be changed later just like how toybox was but I'm still not sure if it'll turn out right.
I'm only really interested in it for the games bundled in like the alpha port of TF2, I agree Half Life should be used in it and to replace those damn beans.
Ngl I shat my pants when I saw the gif cube... also holy shit nice! I can't wait to know more about s&box, although I'm a little worried this "avatar" thing might be used for some kind of monetization scheme. I would really hate to see the spirit of modding break by making it a paid service and a business model rather than a community effort.
The reason why you don't like the new textures in Source 2, compared to Source, is because, as you said before: YOU LIKE NOSTALGIC, OLD, DIRTY, DARK AND BRUTALIST. And Source 2 takes some of that away. And your mind doesn't get used to it.
Garry purposefully avoided using HL as a foundation (which is why he created the beans) because licensing, i think. What I don't understand is why he didn't use Rust assets instead. Or why he is deliberately discouraging game ports.
I don't know why people refuse to refer to S&box as a sequel to Garry's Mod. It's essentially the same exact thing, working off of an upgraded engine that Garry's Mod uses, it's a sandbox game where people can make their own gamemodes and port models, and it's even being made by the same guy who made Garry's Mod. It's literally just upgraded Garry's Mod.
Ngl, i really love the default map, it's so smooth and realistic at same time, i love the details in it aswell liminality. Would be nice if you could do video just about the default map, seems really interesting.
i just got access to it today and i got a couple things to say about it, the servers run extremely smoothly but it just doesn't feel all there its still a little weird and unfamiliar like the spawn menu is literally just community content from what i can tell multiplayer is really shitty it doesn't feel fun most of the time your just running around and dying constantly
sandbox uses the source2 version from HL:A. they've been making so many changes in the engine itself that they've become another branch of source2 version. valve could give them the updated source2 from cs2 if they wishes so, though idk if that's a possible.
s&box is it's own thing, it's not a hl:a mod, and it's why it isn't dependent on any Valve assets. They use source 2 because it's more intuitive than UE
I've had my hands on s&box for at least 2 years now and I'll tell you, I'm extremely skeptical about it. for all intents and purposes this is roblox on source 2

For Sbox to succeed, it should be encouraged and supported to do something entirely new.
me personally, i’m not that excited for s&box
I have the suspicious feel that this will be dead in the water upon release...
After reading the comments here, it got me thinking... And yeah, I kinda agree...
if i recall correctly, Facepunch was given the engine but if they wanted to use valve's assets they had to pay a % cut of the overall revenue.. for each valve game that they took assets from . I think the overall reason for this is becasue valve wants facepunch to stand on its own leg and create something of their own instead of relying on valve. also im pretty sure that they are intentionally trying to make it as far away from half life as possible, considering the overall aesthetic and the horrible sausage characters. Also its important to remember that valve as a company is getting old, like gabe just reached 60 years old and many of the employees are also pretty old.. doing online games is many magnitudes easier than creating a believable singleplayer experience and most of their success is from this market (multiplayer). like both half life games were kinda considered failures (by valves standards) even if many people loved them
ah yes Cry of Fear: Source 2
The "beans" as eligible characters in the game is called Terry (he has neither a gender nor a certain ethnicity or anything, he is just a character that serves as a placeholder and as a main character if you want, at the same time). And they are one of the S&Box mascots (I don't know if there are more officially), I think the other two are realistic humans with different skin and hair tones (in fact, one of them has no hair on his head, he's bald) , that right now I don't remember their official names... in the future you will be able to choose or add your own skins or characters to choose from... there are people who are trying to make imports or their own creations to add.
he is a thumb actually
I’ve had the game for a couple weeks. I can’t see it ever being successful like gmod. No steam workshop, no half life props, roblox like game modes rather than servers. I heard copyright will also be enforced in their proprietary workshop. Shame Valve gave Facepunch the Source 2 SDK first because they wasted it on this.
2:40 nah he did my boy Simon dirty 😭😭😭
i tried playing s&box, and the lack of an undo button made me SO upset i couldn't play it
also the beans are ugly as sin
if your talking about a new flagship half life game for s&box to base upon then we're gunna be here till the heat death of the sun
lmao... yeah...
Yeah after reading your comment and some others, it makes sense why they're not banking on HL/CS stuff anymore.
I'm still 50/50 on the beans though.
Nice to see you here, Peter
Beans are boring. I want my Gman selling watermelon to Dr. K.
They can use ANYTHING else besides beans if they want to 'add character' or 'do its own thing'. The beans are ugly and obnoxious.
That's a good point tbh
gmod started as a way to shit around in the source engine
but what we all ended up finding was a public browser of different gamemodes that download instantly-- each tuned slightly different
there were a lot of unique gmod modes that i wish were drawn out into full titles
Hopefully when S&Box is more finished people will use it to make some of the stuff that the Garry's Mod community made (like machinimas).
S&box will fail because of the bean playermodels
Cant wait to see hunt down the freeman on s&box!
SAME
when the radiation is hazardous
Garry made a point to not add half life assets to s&bot because it would allow valve to take an extra 25% cut on royalty for the game and it was too much for him to be willing to agree too.
majority of people iv talked to who have access to S&Box, say theyll stay with Gmod. and about 75% I talked to after explaining that its not Gmod 2, it cant port stuff like maps over 1:1, and DarkRP or the like of it wont be present, that means all the RP gamemodes wont be there, and IP protection so starwars, harry potter, Halo, ect wont be present. because donations cant be pocketed. ... say theyll stay on Gmod.
i'm just excited for when things like DarkRP are implemented into S&Box, i mean there's already infamous maps like downtown v2 being made in s&box and it's just a sure future that i can't wait for since it's bound to happen and it'll be very cool
S&box is more server sided, gmod is more mod sided
gmod wont die because of S&box, like a lot of people exagerate about (not you radiation), rather, S&box will provide a new experience, something different, ya know?
tho uh, things arent lookin' too good, atleast its not finished, would be bad if this was the final product we recieved
Suggestion: play a game mode named Boomer and also try your hand at Hammer 2. It's so much more intuitive and easier than Hammer 1.
I really just pefer GMOD to S&box, since i've started playing gmod nothing can replace it for me, its just got the feel.
The bean models are just the official supported models, the customizability the game modes enable allow the creators to put any model they desire as the character model.
Facepunch wants S&box to be unrelated to any Valve IPs, pretty sure they have made that clear
This really shows how dark and gritty Rad Haz can be
I hope Terry will become I widely beloved character in the internet, after S&Box releases. Terry plushes will soon hit the market.
Btw, Terry is the bean characters that you described.
Terry is a thumb character
bean characters wont make it to final release, if they do the game flops.
@@selectionn they will make it to release and the game won't flop.
The only condition for the game to flop is if developers wont want to develop for it. And currently no one wants to stop
@@selectionn Bro you think the game is going to flop because of the characters? 😭😭
@@creativecipher honestly the only negative talks the game is getting is about Terry
I'm with you rad haz, I don't like the bean people.
B e a n
As someone who's had s&box access for quite a long while now, those thumb people sure have grown on me a lot. :)
The only thing I'm excited about, is making animations and machinimas in S&Box. Like how you make animations in SFM and machinimas in Gmod.
S&Box is not just a game, it's a content creating machine.
3:48 I assume this is to prevent the infamous wait times that most gmod servers had, with the hours it required to download all the addons
just in my opinion i think S&box will never be as big as gmod
s&box not using hla assets is absolutely a dumb move.
It's more that by the time HL:A came out, facepunch had already made all the assets they needed.
@@ninjacat230 No? They weren't even using Source 2 until last year. They can use those assets but they don't want because Valve apparently wants more money for that
I like how he started saying it's not Gmod 2 but it literally looks plays and feels like a sequel to gmod😂
I think, many people don't realize s&box is not a mod, it's a stand alone game running on source, that's why it doesn't have all the HL:A stuff, Garry said so at some point; S&box is not a GMod sequel, it is its own thing
And i thought i was the only one on the wavelength regarding current Gmod being superior than s&box
It will be interesting to see what massive servers start to show up when the game fully releases,
there aren't a lot of fully done games within sandbox. people would need to make one first. though there's already several games that are in a playable state.
so, at the release day there won't be many fun games.
“Wanna see me make a mod?
Wanna see me do it again?”
gerry said he does not want to moutn games
Once S&box is released to the public i can’t wait to get my hands on TF2 S2, it looks very nice
I got access 2 years ago because of a workshop collection I made, do you want a key? I've been making a map for it.
@@ZenTauren no i don't think i really deserve it, thank you tho
@@ZenTauren Can i get one?
@@matynosburitos you two, I have the same name on Discord. These are the last two I can give.
@@matynosburitos It's fine, they're handing them out much more often now.
even with s&box being development and i also highly doubt it will get popularity like its predecessor, gmod will still be my favourite sandbox game, watching those 2010s gmod videos back then, led me getting gmod where i have hours of fun from the addons, still arguably an iconic game even for a decade old game
well actually 🤓 gmod is 2 decades old next year!!!!!!!!
doesnt need that popularity
Ok but there's barely any sand and boxes. I thought this was supposed to be a s&box.
True 😔
A few notes:
1 - Regarding the download speed, I think it might be a client-side thing.
I got good internet and even I had to wait at least a couple of minutes for a simple map like Construct
@@aSkyclad Good internet, had to download a 300MB map for approximately 10 minutes. Unbearable and turned me off even testing the game more.
I hope I can get access to this game soon, I’ve been eagerly waiting for its release for a long while. This looks really good
I get why your confused by some of the decisions Facepunch made during the video. I i highly would recommend at some point going through Garry's blog where he explains why some of those decisions were made, like why the Terry character models are the main models of the game (even tho they plan to also add realistic ones now) or why they aren't using the steam workshop anymore.
Yeah I should read those. I never looked into Sbox before and I was excited to get this video out today.
You want Half-Life 3 for finishing the half life story line
I want Half-Life 3 for GMod Shitpost Assets
We are not the same
I'm only really interested in it for the games bundled in like the alpha port of TF2, I agree Half Life should be used in it and to replace those damn beans.
I fucking despise the playermodels in this game, I'll literally skip on S&box if you're forced to only play with those.
Each gamemode has the possibility to give its own playermodels. So no, you won't be obliged to always use them
Dark and Gritty, but with nice lighting and skybox.
What if Asset Party website for S&box will disappear mysteriously like garrysmod org?
Ngl I shat my pants when I saw the gif cube...
also holy shit nice! I can't wait to know more about s&box, although I'm a little worried this "avatar" thing might be used for some kind of monetization scheme. I would really hate to see the spirit of modding break by making it a paid service and a business model rather than a community effort.
As far as I know, it's a placeholder. Also devs are free to use whatever they want as models
I'm glad to see HL:Source 2 stayed true to the original HL:Source as closely as it could.
Roblox in Source 2 is a good way to explain it.
"Man i wish somebody would make a mod!"
Kid named Garry:
The reason why you don't like the new textures in Source 2, compared to Source, is because, as you said before: YOU LIKE NOSTALGIC, OLD, DIRTY, DARK AND BRUTALIST. And Source 2 takes some of that away. And your mind doesn't get used to it.
It was kinda like Roblox but in Source 2.
Garry purposefully avoided using HL as a foundation (which is why he created the beans) because licensing, i think. What I don't understand is why he didn't use Rust assets instead.
Or why he is deliberately discouraging game ports.
S&box used to use Rust assets, but those are super mediocre so they're gradually replacing them with newer high quality assets.
I want S&box is DARK AND GRITTY.
Would be nice if you could do video just about the default map, seems really interesting.
the reason there are no Alyx assets is because there would be a licensing fee, it was something like an extra 15% of the games sales as royalty.
i just got access to it today and i got a couple things to say about it, the servers run extremely smoothly but it just doesn't feel all there its still a little weird and unfamiliar like the spawn menu is literally just community content from what i can tell multiplayer is really shitty it doesn't feel fun most of the time your just running around and dying constantly
Sausage men?
I'm not playing a game with sausage men.
sandbox uses the source2 version from HL:A. they've been making so many changes in the engine itself that they've become another branch of source2 version.
valve could give them the updated source2 from cs2 if they wishes so, though idk if that's a possible.
s&box is it's own thing, it's not a hl:a mod, and it's why it isn't dependent on any Valve assets. They use source 2 because it's more intuitive than UE
Gmod witouth a personality that’s what this game will be
The b e a n s look like something out of Rick and Morty
I've had my hands on s&box for at least 2 years now and I'll tell you, I'm extremely skeptical about it. for all intents and purposes this is roblox on source 2
i cant wait to play this game
source 2 allows for almost INFINITE MAPS size or proceduraly generatad
dark RP little boy hiroshima incoming cant wait
