I think a big factor in your recovery process from hoarding is that you have looked at the roots of the problem (in your case). You have a great voice and you are really great at articulate the roots of hoarding (both in your case and in general). I think that you have helped many people with your story. Lots of love!

EXACTLY. Not enough who struggle - and even fewer on the outside - ever really get to the root of what’s holding them, as an individual, in that less-than-beneficial pattern.
Regarding my own battle, I have been able to put my finger on a few reasons…. and they’re *still* coming. Nothing is ever one and done when it comes to mental illness.
Let us never forget how invaluable mindfulness, empathy and compassion are ~ especially with ourselves.

I feel so awful for the people on a TV hoarding program when a group of people rush in and throw everything away. Make the person decide in seconds what is going to be saved or thrown away. Ms. Heart how you are handling your situation is so much healthier. One program broke my heart. An older gentlemen loved books and sheet music. He was begging them not to throw his books away, the poor guy was just crying. He was trying to tell them they were first addition publications, which many of it was! That was the last time I watched the TV program. Thank you for showing people there are healthier steps that can be taken to combat hoarding.

The single greatest way you can prevent stuff from ending up in the landfill is simply cutting down your consumption. Not buying stuff means less gets produced, which means less gets tossed out (including packaging, waste from production, etc.). I think your no-spend challenges and "shopping the hoard" are probably the best things you've implemented to achieve that goal.
You've come such a long way!

I used to have a ton of craft supplies which I would never have used in a life time. I donated the paper and other supplies to a local school. They were absolutely thrilled. Old blankets and towels were donated to animal refuges and veterinarian clinics as they are always looking for those sorts of items.

Thank you for sharing your story! I know that had to be difficult for you to share. Years ago I had a family member who was a hoarder. I didn't realize that there was a reason behind her hoarding. I wish that I knew why. Hoarding can be hereditary. I was a level 1 hoarder. I am still working on those tendencies.

I think along with my ADHD a lot of childhood trauma caused me to hold on to things I don't need. The anxiety doesn't help either. I have a need to collect and keep things to make myself look better to others. I was overweight, an only child growing up with a single mom in the early 60's. I never felt like I was good enough for anyone. I was teased and taunted and since I was a minority in an all while school it was even worse. Of course this caused me to get into a couple of really bad relationships just like you did. I swear this past few years I have learned to live with less. I have curatemy wardrobe and try to only buy what I need now. I try to keep track of what I have like an inventory. It has helped me. You know what else helped today? Seeing that your nightstand looks like mine!!!!!!!!! OMG I don't feel alone!! Thank you for your support and making me feel ok!!

Dear Mrs. Heart, I always call you unicorn heart because it just stayed from the start and your love of rainbows and unicorns🤗💚Love to see how far you have come on your journey, to see you smiling and confident. I have been digging deep for decades now to understand this hoarding of mine but I have not yet written down a list, I will do that, some of my reasons are different and some are similar, we are all so unique in some of the specifics of our struggles yet we are alike in our humanity and the fact we are confronted with struggles and try so hard to cope. We are all really trying to do the best we can with what we have at hand, and it is a (dysfunctional, as in it is not functional for us in the the end) coping mechanism....I know my hoarding came out many many years later and stems from my deep chronic depression, it's like the depression was invisible and it became tangible, visible, through hoarding, my pain materialized that way. I am still stuck, still struggling, still fighting and many days I am desperate and have been unable to get out of it in spite of so much trying, and I also have not been able to find adequate help. I think shame is the worst part, because it compounds all the impairment this demon has on my life. I am still trying and still trying to find support. sending you Light 💚💐

My stuff gives me value. I grew up poor in an abusive home. When I was on my own, It felt good to be able to purchase items that I wanted. Because I paid for the stuff, to get rid of it was wasteful even if I didn't care for the item anymore. Also I always keep gifts that are given to me. I don't want to offend someone by getting rid of something that they gave me.
Tne feeling of having value that my stuff gives me that is number 1 reason. I'm trying to declutter but it is hard.

I wonder if it would be a good excercise for you (and others) to reword those 10 statements to show how hoarding actually hindered you in achieving them. Like if you hoard you can’t find the things you need in the hoard and so go out and buy again, therefore spending more money. Or, things in the hoard become damaged and unusable due to moistness etc so then they have to end up in a landfill instead of being used.

My mum lived in timesof extreme poverty, so she had to share a pair of shoes with her other 3 siblings. Feeling of financial insecurity , unsafety and context factors can lead to hoarding. When in poverty, one must think of surviving and maybe emotional expression is suppressed ( how are you going to express anger when you cannot afford the desperation?). So, i know that in my mum's case that is also important in her hoarding.

I’m facing a similar situation with someone in my family who is older. What I learned from this video is to emphasize safety and security. “They will have everything you need at your new home. They will take care of you there - they will cook & clean for you and you can just rest and enjoy yourself.” I don’t know if that will work but at least it’s an attempt to be soothing and reassuring.

We first have to identify what the root of the anxiety/depression/PTSD is. Once we identified the fear source, we tell ourselves that we are safe and that does not exist today. We release those feelings of fear, pain and regret. If you are ADHD like I am not just need to take action to release that energy: I started writing, meditating, walking, exercising, yoga, dancing…an action that is healthy for me to destress myself! I hope this helps you my friend ❤️🙏🏼❤️

My friend told me that once she was in a very frail financial condition and could not sustain her shopping addiction. She decided to hoard pencils because they were unexpansive and could afford them. It worked for her.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sure it has helped lots of people. I have watched all your videos and enjoy every one. As an observer I think you have a problem with shopping too much and buying too much and that's where a lot of this stuff comes from. Maybe you're one of those people who gets a huge brain chemical boost whenever you buy things. I know you've gotten better over the years and don't buy as much as you used to but I lovingly suggest you consider whether you have a shopping addiction or maybe had one in the past. It also seems to me like your husband may be a bit of a hoarder or pack rat, too. I understand a lot of what you mean when you talk about not wanting to waste and be resourceful and not want to add things to a landfill. But keeping all these things in our life isn't what prevents landfills from filling up. The best thing that we could do to lessen landfills and impacts on the environment and animals is just consume less overall. I hope these thoughts help you make further progress and I look forward to your future videos.

Very true, I have to research this more bc I showed hoarding behaviors since age 4-5. I was raised in a “minimalist style home” as my mom kept nothing. So that need to save was already ingrained in me. So those early childhood experiences amplified those behaviors more.

@@ahoardersheart my son is having a hard time to let stuff go. Toys, books, decor, crafted stuff. I never take stuff away when he is not there. We do it together. And for now, we put it in boxes on the attic. He is three years old and he needs to keep it for now.
If i trow it away he is crying a lot, sad, scared more stuff is gone..(something that was made with painted pasta was molding).
He is old enough to miss stuff and to young to make the actual decisions where things go.
He is fine with clothing to small being passed on. So we apply this principle to stuff in boxes. Yesterday he asked if a certain toy could be gifted to a specific baby. So i think he is ready to part with it.
He and i went somewhere when he was almost 2. Over a year later he recognised the place instantly. Many people think their child will not know, mine remembers things 15 months ago..he will notice things that were somewhere for months being gone.
Maybe stuff you were attached to as a little kid were just gone. Which might trigger anxiety and fear..very young.
