The whole point of Michael helping the FIB in the game is the fact that if Dave gets fired the feds will look up his files and see that Michael is not dead people really didn't paid attention on the game
Pretty much. Honestly GTA 5 is one of the easiest game stories to follow. Nothing about the story is complex nor confusing. Only explanation that would make sense is if people were skipping cut scenes. Which if you're doing then your doing yourself a disservice. While GTA 5's story isn't complex or confusing that is far from saying it's poorly written. It's a simple very well written story. Hell some of the cutscenes became memes.
Yeah, I'm not sure where the confusion is or how the title is supposed to be some bombshell to realize. Michael was never in witness protection, Dave shot him and convinced him to share the portion of the loot that Michael had on him as a corrupt bribe. The entire reason Michael did Dave's dirty work to help out the FIB was because Dave was covering for faking Michael's death. Dave explicitly makes this clear, pointing out that they would see his files and see Michael didn't die if he gets fired from the FIB. If Michael was just in witness protection, which would also require someone to be a witness *against* to matter, then he wouldn't owe anything to Dave and the FIB at all. This is all beyond the fact that when you are the only one caught from a bank crew who then stay on the lam for decades, who are you being a witness against?
In the mission where Amanda gets caught stealing from Didersachs, Michael mentions that they're in witness protection, so he's even willing to lie to his own family
It's wild how much of a sweet guy Trevor actually is, he clearly had so much love for Michael that was never shared and that must hurt him in a huge way
Explain this, then: Let's say Trevor believes Michael - Mike says he went in blind like everybody else, got shot & arrested and then "took a deal" that got him into Witness Protection and off the hook. Trevor is not totally stupid: to "take a deal" from the FIB as Michael said would mean he confessed and cooperated with the cops in exchange for a clean new identity and the continued use of his stolen funds (hence how he could afford the mansion). The game glosses over this plot hole, but Trevor would know that Michael would have been expected to give the FIB evidence against Brad and Trevor, evidence which they used to put Brad in prison (he thinks) and confiscate all of Trevor's loot (while Michael got off scot-free and got to keep his loot). Why is that a more tolerable outcome than that PLUS having Brad accidentally killed and lying about it? The difference in moral weight seems minimal at that point. Michael literally snitched on them both to the Feds and is now rich and free because of it. It's not like Trevor is indifferent about most forms of treason but draws a clear line at treason resulting in murder...
I think it depends on the player, because in the first mission when Michael gets grabbed by the guard after Trevor shoots him he says "you didn't have to do that" but maybe it's just because Dave wanted it to be a clean job idk just speculation lol
@@rockyou5252 and what was said after is another clue that Trevor was supposed to die and that Michael planned this. Trevor: There'll be time for grieving later. Michael: Yeah, you got that right.
Call me crazed, but the more moral and/or morally complicated the protagonist, the more good I try to be. Like, I'll try to avoid killing peds, but it's always open season on gang members and police. It doesn't take away fun factor, though.
What's also funny about prologue is when Brad gets shot, Michael knows part of the deal was to keep him alive, so he says "He's gonna be fine" but the instant he gets shot he says "ah fuck, I'm gonna fucking bleed out" Just a thought
Doesn't really make sense. How is Michael supposed to convince everyone he's dead unless he appears to have been shot? I agree that Michael can be a diva but he likely knew he was going to take a "bullet" anyway
Another thing to note: When the train hits their getaway vehicle during the prologue, Trevor wants to "...go this way to the chopper", but Michael insists that they "stick to the plan" that leads to him and Brad getting shot.
Other than the line foreshadowing Michael's involvement in the plan, Rockstar actually completely screwed the dialogue at the part of the mission. The more you replay it the less it makes sense. Obviously the train crash isn't planned, yet literally as soon as they walk 5 feet away from the wreck Brad says "where the fcks the chopper?" as if he's expecting it to be there. But why would it? Pretty weird if they happened to crash feet away from the meeting spot, and if that is how R* is playing it off, then why would Trevor want to go a different way if they were only feet away.... eitherway you to try to frame it it doesnt make sense

In regard to Michael's apparent blood spurt when Dave seemingly shoots him, it's possible Michael was wearing what's known as a "blood squib" which is basically a bit of fake blood over a small controlled explosive that emulates the effect of being shot. They used to use them in movies a lot, which is fitting because Michael is established to be a big old movie fan.
Exactly. Which is what makes these three so compelling. GTA V's story was so compelling I played it multiple times when i didn't do that for any of the other gtas

to be fair @gustav just took gta 5 outta the context and made a funny joke if u’re stoopid enough to think that he meant the youtuber is a homeless man you should disconnect your wifi and stay offline
Here are some more points to prove Matt’s point 1. If Michael really cleaned the slate wouldn’t he and Amanda have jobs? It’s never stated that they have jobs 2. Why are they so scared of Trevor? If he really was in Witness Protection then the FIB could move Michael and his family out of the state within the drop of a family plus they could have arrested Trevor in the process
Michael and his family knew he was nuts and didn't want any part of him. Trevor oftentimes gets so angry he just kills people over small stuff, that's a pretty good reason for Mike's family to not particularly like Trevor.
They wouldn't have jobs because they still have millions that they have access to unless you mean to insinuate that they wouldn't allow them to keep the millions they stole which yeah they probably wouldn't
Matt’s point doesn’t really have to be ‘proved’ it’s not like the game is ambiguous about this. that Michael and Dave’s deal wasn’t through the actual witness protection program is a major plot point
Trevor is irredeemable, but has a very fucked up, emotional and physical abusive sad history, so you can't help but feel sad for the supposing "monster"
@@aliescobar9615 its basically a known fact that you would want to be friends with trevor than a enemy, and Michael was Trevor's only friend for a long time, they probably met when trevor was more sane
I think what's most interesting is that the reason Michael tells Trevor that he's gonna bleed out is because I think Michael realized that Trevor could escape. Otherwise, he would have not encouraged Trevor to leave him and instead made him linger long enough for Dave to kill him (as first intended). So, in a way, Michael saved his ass by making it clear he was going to die and remove any doubt from Trevor's mind in case Trevor actually lives, which I think was a quick decision on Michael's part.
Michael at that point could just close is eyes and fake is death right away, but no, Trevor had to go that was the whole plan so Michael said "I'm gonna fucking bleed out, Jesus..." so that Trevor didn't go anywhere and tried to protect him so that police could finish him off, that's what I think. I don't even know anymore my head is full of fucked up theories, (basically full of shit)
I think it was Lester that called out that people in the witness protection program don't have 5 digit figures transferred to their bank account every month. They state this pretty clearly in the game, not sure how anyone could think that Michael was actually in witness protection.
@@ekhowo1475Who's talking about casual players? This video obviously directed towards members of the GTA community, people who are enamored with the lore of these games. I don't know why this requires an explanation.
O yea funny how it all worked out but Trevor found out about Michael because of the jewellery store and they only robbed that because of pulling Down that house
Michael whoms family is literally terrified of being in a car with him because he's a "psychopath that mows down pedestrians". Michael whoms family won't tell about drama because they're scared he'll kill people for slight inconveniences 😂😂
I think its funny that one of the most important parts of the story was glossed over by most people (including myself) because we didn't understand witness protection isnt possible without a conviction
"Its subtle but its not really that subtle if you play the game and listen to the dialogue" Meanwhile I spent the first half of my playthrough thinking Lester was Brad and thats why he walked like that
something interesting to note is, if you chose the ending "c", when you arrive at the foundry (or whatever it is called) and trevor and michael are pointing their guns at each other, trevor keeps his finger off the trigger while michael's finger is on, ready to take out trevor if necessary. Trevor is crazy and unstable, yes, but he cares and thinks about the ones closest to him and could never kill michael. He cares about Michael, he cared about Brad when he thought he was in prison, he even cared about Floyd wich can be seen in T's serious reaction when Debra mentions another man.
A lot of it is disclosed in dialog between Mike and Dave and also Trevor. The deal was for Trevor to die, Brad get locked away, and Michael fade into obscurity with the money from the heist while Dave comes out the hero. It's even elaborated between Mike and Dave about their special deal for Michael's safety.
I love how they explain away and give an in-game justification for how Michael, Trevor, and Franklin are able to leave fingerprints around and murder cops without getting caught (as long as they are able to escape until the search is called off) due to the fact that Dave is able to stop investigations from taking place and keep their trail clean. They do the same think for Niko in GTA IV but it’s with UL Paper from the IAA. I hereby hope to see it come to pass that something similar is implemented in the up-&-coming sixteenth entry in the series known by the name of “GTA VI”.
If they had a more in depth system of bribery and covering tracks it'd be fantastic. We got multiple games of over the top fun, maybe it's about time GTA gets a heavier dose of hard simulation.
I hope GTA VI has the same arrangement but instead it's some third agency covering for the protags like Homeland Security or the NSA or some shit, keeping with the theme of GTA IV being IAA then GTA V being FIB
@@CaptainJZH yeah i was thinking the NSA would be perfect, because they ARE the third agency that people tend to associate with spies and espionage and stuff like that. The CIA, FBI, and NSA are the big 3, so if we got the NSA this time it would complete the HD trilogy

It's implied over and over again, and even somewhat of a story point, that Micheal is a compulsive liar. He casually lies to Lester, Dave and Trevor even after they find out the truth.
Him trying to put the moves on Trevor (not like that) for Bury The Hatchet makes me feel so slimy hearing him lie so easily, cool as a cucumber right until the end.
This is not accurate from Trevor's perspective. Trevor thinks Michael snitched on Brad, in order to get off his charges. Trevor is not gullible but he is suggestable to things that are unclear, especially cos he doesn't want to believe Michael would sell him out. If Trevor was as distrusting and paranoid as Michael he would have immediately realised the holes in the story when he realised Lester was not in jail too, and he would have thought about how Brad was already caught and going to be easily convicted for multiple homicide and armed robbery. What you say is obvious looking from the outside, but Trevor didn't think like that. He believed Michael loved him and would always be honest, like Trevor would be
I think Lester could convincingly get out of trouble. He's handicapped and yet knows how to sell millions of dollars worth of gold from a national depository without raising suspicion
Not sure if anyone cares, but if I worked at Wendy’s and had a co-worker that constantly talked about GTA 5’s lore without being annoying, that’d be mah Dream jawb
Exactly 😂 and Michael convicted Trevor that there was a helicopter on the route they where going and made sure they didn’t deviate. He was then put in witness protection because his death was faked and Trevor was on the loose.
Exactly. He was personally paying Dave a 5 figure amount of cash that got washed through fronts. Lester literally tells you at the beginning of the story. Michael lived off his stashed millions while paying Dave for giving him a new life. Dave came to him after the heist because both of their cover was going to be blown
GTA4 was similar, there was even a meme about it from years back where it was like Cutscene Niko didn't want to kill anymore, then Gameplay Niko all chaos broke loose lol
Popular theory, when the player controls Michael, Michael has no control. Basically, in the Therapy Session, he said "sometimes I dont feel like myself Doc" this supports the theory, as he "doesnt feel like himself" sometimes. And the "sometimes" is when the player is controlling him. This theory has some support, but not alot, but it's fun to think about.
@@SynergyGaming112 that kinda fits with my headcanon for a lot of games. Basically you are playing as God, controlling people and allowing them to accomplish things no normal person could achieve.
Doesn't Michael straight up tell Franklin he was placed into some sort of "informal witness protection". He kind of spells it out after the mission where he has to sneak into the morgue, albeit in a short story type of way.
@@TheDanteEX I think he only tells franklin that as a lie/to keep the details short. Wouldn't exactly wanna tell a gangster you're robbing with that your best friend is in the fbi, y'know?
I like to believe it's franklin's story. Only that the parts we do as trevor and Michael are told to Franklin when they meet up... Kind of weird i know
I think Michael would have sadly taken his own life after his wife and children left or have given up and kept drinking booze and smoking cigars at least if it wasn't for Franklin being the 'son he always wanted' or sort of like the man who re-ignited the fire in Michael's heart and soul, the love for the criminal lifestyle. Franklin was the reason Michael started heisting again and eventually the reason Michael wanted to live a quiet life. I wouldn't say he didn't matter.
Trevor was meant to die, and Michael was meant to fake his death. That’s why Michael lingered around Brad after he fell over. Because he knew he had to be shot. It’s like, if someone was just shot infront of you, your first reaction would probably be to take cover, which is what Trevor did. But Michael knew he had to get shot, so he remained in the open. Idk if he was really shot or not, but he was definitely meant to fake his death.
Normally, Michael would quickly drag Brad to cover, but you can see how he's not even picking Brad up, he's just pointing his palm towards him and even looking into the direction of Dave frantically, it was clear he was waiting for the shot
If you replay the prologue mission during the scene where Brad is shot. If you look at Micheal's chest VERY closely you can see where the bullet goes to. It's a small metal spot. Similar to when you wear body armor and get shot in the chest and back in game. Seriously I shit you not. It's on his left hand side, Micheal's left hand side, that is lol
Even without all the technical stuff like where and how the bullet hit Michael, his animated reactions really give away the fact that he wasn't hurt after being shot. Being shot in the chest with a high calibre Sniper rifle round would cause pain that even adrenaline could not suppress, you could clearly see Brad just giving up his will to live while Michael keeps talking even after one of his lungs (supposedly) has been blasted to bits.
I love that Rockstar doesn’t feel the need to shove this in your face, it’s a treat for the people who pay attention to uncover the “true” story. It also fits the themes of the game, of who’s lying to who or double crossing who. It just shows how confident they are in their story telling.
I'm not the biggest fan of what they have done with gta online, but they know how to write good story lines and never dissapoint with their single player parts of their games

Damn, I wonder if Micheal was acknowledging genuine grief he would have afterwards about the fate of his friends (if Micheal ever truly considered Trevor a friend rather than just an ally of circumstance) or if it was just bitter sarcasm.
I'm pretty sure Micheal did at some point see Trevor as a friend, but I don't think he ever truly trusted him completely. He knew he was crazy so he just had to take him out one way or another
There is also the part where Michael is having flashbacks on his way to catch up to Trevor in North Yankton, on them he is talking with Amanda, trying very hard to convince her that the plan was a good idea. They dont show any of Amanda's reactions, but by Michael's lines you can assume she is inconsolable. Also, in the mission where Trevor and Michael crash the Fame or Shame show, Tracy is very happy to see Trevor again, she is surprized and goes to hug him. So you can tell that Trevor was a good friend of the family. Its possible that before the prologue heist Michael told Amanda about the plan to kill Trevor and she broke into tears. Because why would she be so sad about the idea of being free, rich, and live in LS? Of course during the story she tells Michael to keep Trevor away from her and the children, but that is with her knowing Michael tried to kill him and what Trevor is capable of, so the 180 makes sense.
It's very plausible. I've also heard a theory that Jimmy is Brad's son and Tracey is Trevor's son, so if Amanda is aware of this, it would explain those feelings towards Trevor's death.
In prologue when trevor shot the guard who held michael, trevor said “there’s time for grieving later” and michael says “yeah, you’re right about that one”
And an awesome detail After killing the guard in prologue Trevor says: "they'll be time for grieving later" then Michael says "Yeah you got that right"
Even the way Michael indicates to Dave during the prologue that he’s ready to take a bullet... if you look at his body language, his arms wide open... it’s little things that kinda make it obvious if you play it through again a second time.

@@deeremies2266 Well, the rifle is based on a AW-F sniper rifle, it fires a 308. Winchester bullet, it has more power than a Ak 47 round so.. It should pierce through multiple targets. Unless it were a hollowed point round or a expanding bullet (don't know if possible)
Something to add to this: When Brad gets shot, Trevor calls out it’s the feds and goes for cover. Michael kneels down to check on Brad taking his time so that Dave can get a “clear shot” on Michael (assuming that Michael isn’t actually shot). Why would Michael take so long out in the open if he wasn’t waiting for Dave to shoot him?
From Trevors perspective giving his personality he probably thought Michael had a real heart & was loyal not caring about himself at that point because he cared more about saving his friend.
If all that stuff was really random Michael would’ve tried to drag Brad to cover instead of just kneeling by him in the open. He did give Dave a good shot

Fun fact: It's possible to hear the phone call between Michael and Dave (4:51) before Michael gets back into the heist business. As soon as you first unlock Michael, following the first several missions as Franklin, you can go into your contacts and call Dave, thus initiationing the call before Michael has gotten back into "trouble" yet. Edit: I forgot about Michael beating up Simeon, thus still being in "trouble" regardless. Matto is right.

Here are some more points to prove Matt’s point
1. If Michael really cleaned the slate wouldn’t he and Amanda have jobs? It’s never stated that they have jobs
2. Why are they so scared of Trevor? If he really was in Witness Protection then the FIB could move Michael and his family out of the state within the drop of a family plus they could have arrested Trevor in the process
Trevor ran off during the Prologue

@@SoundSurf0 Its fake blood, Michael is a fan of movies, so i think thats the case
I don't even know anymore my head is full of fucked up theories, (basically full of shit)

something interesting to note is, if you chose the ending "c", when you arrive at the foundry (or whatever it is called) and trevor and michael are pointing their guns at each other, trevor keeps his finger off the trigger while michael's finger is on, ready to take out trevor if necessary. Trevor is crazy and unstable, yes, but he cares and thinks about the ones closest to him and could never kill michael. He cares about Michael, he cared about Brad when he thought he was in prison, he even cared about Floyd wich can be seen in T's serious reaction when Debra mentions another man.
And Michael helps in killing Trevor if you choose "Kill Trevor". In "Kill Michael" Trevor is mad at Franklin for killing him

Also if you take her out drinking with Michael its alluded that she slept with Trevor so her feelings being complicated make sense
It's very plausible. I've also heard a theory that Jimmy is Brad's son and Tracey is Trevor's son, so if Amanda is aware of this, it would explain those feelings towards Trevor's death.

Even the way Michael indicates to Dave during the prologue that he’s ready to take a bullet... if you look at his body language, his arms wide open... it’s little things that kinda make it obvious if you play it through again a second time.

Damn, never noticed that Trevor was supposed to get shot instead of Brad. That's a huge detail that I've somehow missed all these years.
When doing dead man walking and Michael talks to Franklin in the last cutscene of that mission, michaels talking about his deal with “the feds” aka Dave where “the wrong guy got killed” AP he had to go into an “informal witness protection”
Would't a sniper bullet go through a human being easily?
@@Lone_Coyote depends on what caliber it is and what type of bullet it shoots
@@deeremies2266 Well, the rifle is based on a AW-F sniper rifle, it fires a 308. Winchester bullet, it has more power than a Ak 47 round so.. It should pierce through multiple targets. Unless it were a hollowed point round or a expanding bullet (don't know if possible)
Neither of them was supposed to it was always Micheal
Something to add to this:
When Brad gets shot, Trevor calls out it’s the feds and goes for cover.
Im loving these responses... Good ass storyboard! Love it!
If all that stuff was really random Michael would’ve tried to drag Brad to cover instead of just kneeling by him in the open. He did give Dave a good shot

The call between michael and dave sounds like dialogue from Oblivion.
I was thinking the same thing, LOL.
Michael: "Have you heard of the High Elves?"
@@kota86 Dave: Get your Black Horse Courier here!
Of course that's intentional: the patronising, slow tone of the conversation. They both have alot of evidence against each other and a mutual respect at the same time, hence the sarcasm.

what 8.7k hours does to a MF.
Nah he just lazy
Fun fact: It's possible to hear the phone call between Michael and Dave (4:51) before Michael gets back into the heist business. As soon as you first unlock Michael, following the first several missions as Franklin, you can go into your contacts and call Dave, thus initiationing the call before Michael has gotten back into "trouble" yet.
Edit: I forgot about Michael beating up Simeon, thus still being in "trouble" regardless. Matto is right.
Got that from whatever?
Well, he would have just smashed through the glass on Simeon's lot. So that would probably still be trouble, and thus a lie. In my audio files, the sound files are listed as around Casing the Jewel Store.
I swear I’ve always gotten this call at the end of the game. Like you keep doing stuff and Dave randomly calls or Michael does and it’s like a “hey man it’s all finally over” but without the Steve part bc he’s dead. Maybe I’m confusing it with another call but yea
@@cyberjoy404 Actually I think you only get a text message from Dave at the end. He tells Micheal that it's all finally over and tells Micheal not to contact him again.
