stjepan, i basically copy your entire repertoire so that i can watch your games and pretend i'm playing. but two days ago i decided to start playing e4 and the ruy lopez to learn different positions and now i see this. i'll pretend it was just for me :)

Happy to see you play the ruy lopez. I would advise you to not to think the berlin endgame as some certain draw. Didn't just recently Firouzja lose in classical to it? It certaintly is Drawish but not some certaint draw you seem to categorize it at, even at the supergrandmaster level, much less on your level

Absolutely true, it is just a pretty unusual territory to press for white and you have to study the specific endgame a lot, so going for an Anti Berlin is probably more practical for most people. But as you said, the endgame is not a draw because white has some sort of an advantage still

Moral of the story seems to be to be very careful about playing Bg5 (or...Bg4) before the opponent has castled. You need to check ...h6-...g5 doesn't work or be prepared to exchange your bishop.

Same can be said about playing h3 before opponent castles

I play this line as black. Sad that Stjepan didn’t know it though, it would be interesting to know what he thinks about this

12:13 Found it shocking you prefer white, seems like black has a big edge with the g-file pressure.

2:23 c3 controlling d4 keeps the game more in the spirit in the Ruy Lopez, funny how black wins a lot more after nd4 despite the engine liking white.

great analysis hope you pounce back quickly, I think you didn’t handle the shock of being worse this quickly very well , you should of excepted the situation and tried to survived

As someone who plays Ruy Lopez every chance I get, Bg5 is almost never in top 3 moves. Often you just keep it undeveloped for a long time, and/or go Bd2 after everything else has moved.

17:40 if you take with the rook then Ba5 and you can resign 😅

May I ask what was your reasoning at move 13 when you said "Now I have to go Qe1"? There were several other moves to consider, like Qc2 (or Qb1) to overprotect e4, or Nf3 (giving up your Nc4 idea) which helps with the king's defense. I know the computer approves your 13. Qe1, but I would like to know your reasoning, as for me this move is not obvious.

Instead of 5.0-0 5.Bxc6 and then Nbd2 is also a nice line.

after the bc5 berlin play bxc6 with ideas of nd2 nc4 kh1 rg1 g4, its what gms play there

I think you actually won this game because you played e4 and went into a Spanish with limited theory. Every game doesn’t have to be a Queens Gambit or Caro Kann.

Bro plays e4 for the first time and gets -1 position with white after 10 moves..... way to go, Stjepan
