Sela tunnel is the world's longest bi-lane tunnel, constructed by the Border Roads Organization at an altitude above 13,000 feet, costing Rs 825 crore.
Comprising two tunnels, with lengths of 1,595 meters and 1,003 meters, respectively, alongside 8.6 kilometers of approach and link roads, the project features both T1 and T2 tubes. T2, the longer tube, spanning 1,594.90 meters, is accompanied by a narrower, parallel tunnel measuring 1,584.38 meters in length, designed to facilitate escape in case of a cave-in.
Ensuring user safety, the tunnels are equipped with ventilation systems, robust lighting, and firefighting mechanisms, boasting the capacity to accommodate daily passage for 3,000 cars and 2,000 trucks.
The tunnel's clearance is sufficiently high to accommodate all military vehicles.
Described as an engineering marvel, the Sela tunnel offers all-weather connectivity to Tawang via the Sela pass on the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang (BCT) road in Arunachal Pradesh. Employing the new Austrian tunnelling method, it integrates top-notch safety features, as highlighted by an officer to TOI.
This development ensures rapid deployment of troops and heavy weaponry, including artillery guns, from the 4 Corps headquarters in the Assam plains to Tawang, addressing any emergent situations swiftly.
This tunnel will trim the distance between Tawang and Dirang in Arunachal's West Kameng district by 12km, resulting in a nearly 90-minute time saving for commuters in each direction.
The BCT road often faces blockages at the Sela pass during winters due to heavy snowfall, creating significant logistical hurdles for both military and civilian traffic.
The Sela pass, visible to Chinese soldiers from the LAC, poses a tactical disadvantage. The tunnel, passing underneath the pass, will help mitigate this military vulnerability.
Another officer told TOI that the tunnel will not just enhance the defense readiness of our armed forces by facilitating quicker and more efficient troop movement, circumventing the challenges posed by the Sela top, but will also contribute to the socio-economic advancement of this border region.
