Just a tip , always use a zigzag stitch on elastic, when you stretch your elastic with your fabric it can break the stitching , it won’t with a zigzag stitch
Hi! Can I ask what measurements you took? I am a little confused about the measurements that are marked in this video. Help!! lol. Trying to make some for myself and daughters. THANKS!!
After all these years! I always come back to you!! This is possible for lots of reasons and why not be pretty all by myself making clothes that make me feel good, love you Jess!!
Hi Jess, thank you for such an easy to follow, simple and basic skirt pattern. I've made this skirt for myself, the first time I've ever sewn an item of clothing for me. I love my new skirt!
This looks excellent and quite simple. I. Had to rewatch to understand how to find where to place the hip and waist and how to measure! But I love the idea of measuring length from the top of the triangle to get a perfect rounded waistline! Thank you!
Hi, I just made my first skirt ever following your video :) I am super happy how it turned out. I even added a slit to the side. Thank you for the easy and clear instructions! :)
I just got an old sewing machine from my mom and I haven't sewn anything since I was like 12 so I wasn't sure what to use it for then I wanted one of these skirts but couldn't find any in the length or pattern I wanted so I found this and now I am going to try and make one on my own because this is so cute I love it!
So I just finished making a skirt!!! It took me less than a day and this is the first thing I’ve ever made. It looks pretty great I think I’m going to add lining because it’s pretty de through i got a blue floral rayon fabric. I really messed up the waist part but other than that it’s not bad! Thank you!
To make sure the fabric can fit around the hip. Most similar skirts, like circle skirts, are cut from a square corner so this step isn't needed. When using this triangular corner, measuring for the hip is needed. You find the place on the folded fabric that can accomodate your hips by measuring half of your hip measurement plus seam allowance. Then measure up from there to the waist.
Thank you so much for sharing this skirt video I wish I was as clever as you are x can you tell me does it matter how you fold the material I'm new to sewing and I'm not sure how to fold the selvedge. Thank you
You can. But you need to adjust the measurements a bit as the fabric is not stretchy. The waist size need to be bigger than the hip size to be able to wear the dress
I love your video ❤What will this measurements fit? I’m 76+ so might have missed that information. Again I love it. Do you have an easy top video? Thank you !!!
Hi thank you for video but if my hips 46 inches I do 23 inches across but how much do I go up for waistline? And how much material should I buy I’m 5’ 8” and love your length .
The fabric you need to buy depend on how long the skirt you want and also the width of the fabric. But usually you need to buy the one at least same with the width of your fabric.
Oh, if your fabric is not stretchy, you can't use this technique. You need to use another tutorial for it. I have one tutorial for it on my channel. You can check it out
I love everything u make 😍 but unfortunately I don't have a sewing machine but I made that puff sleeves dress and that jeans diy by hand sewing it😹 thankyou so much for the inspiration ❤️
Hi, I love this tutorial and I'm trying to follow it, but for some reason the marks that I make for my hip measurements are not the same from the top on both sides. I've tried multiple times and even folding the fabric differently but I'm still having the same problem. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Do you know how I could fix this problem? Thanks so much!
This is so good! So many of the tutorials require me to cut two front and back pieces but my cutting skill is not there yet cause i cant cut them evenly ! Can i use a zipper instead of a elastic ?
Maybe I’m handicapped here, but this is the second time I’ve followed this, and I can’t get the skirt past my thighs?? I have no idea what I’m doing wrong?
Thanks for the great video! I hope that you can reply me on this because I really wanna make this skirt. You made it look so easy! Is there a reason why the waist is 25 cm above the hips? Can I adjust it on my own body or will something go wrong? I am plus size and the fullest part of my body is not the hips but somewhere between waist and hips. So I was thinking measuring the fullest part and then go 10-15 cm up. Will it be ok or do I have to go 25 cms up? TIA
Olga Griega yes, you can do it. The most important part here is measuring the biggest part on your hips. Usually it's at the middle of the butt. Then from there, go up to your belly button
you can with this exact same pattern! Mesure 2.5 to 4cm wider to account for some size that will be lost to heming and fray protection After doing the mesuring, zig-zag along both long edges to protect them from fraying, then hem both. A hem is the final step used on the bottom in this video. for a neater finish, double this hem to hide the raw edge. same trick can be used on the bottom hem later. Mesure how long you want your slit from the wider side of the pattern, then sew together up to this line. Continue with the video to complete the garment. Now, to get a truly pro finish, you'll need either a liner, or you could edge the seams with bais binding, but in keeping with the "simple" theme of this garment, I didn't include those. Just make sure you're stitching with a top and bottom thread that blends in as you will see it.
No, you can't. You need stretchy fabric for this DIY. With cotton, you will need a zipper. You can check my other tutorial for this type of dress by cotton fabric on my channel
Do the (personal, to one's own size) measurements used to calculate the waist allow for the use of non-stretchy fabrics in this construction? Or is a woven stretch fabric a necessity for the resulting waistband size, in order to be able to pull the skirt down over one's shoulders/up over one's hips? Since there is no gathering of fabric at the waist, I'm assuming a stretch fabric is necessary... but wanted to be sure.
It's better with spandex. For other material will need a zipper if you want it tight to your hip when wearing. Without the zipper, it'll be loose a bit.
I love how simply you present these projects! Very easy to follow. Did you use an elastic stitch for the hem and waistband? Or just a regular straight stitch?
Oooh this is so coooool, you did a video about sewing skirt, like I wanted to do 🥺, thank youuuuu 😇💜. The final result looks very nice, I'm in love with it ! I have an another idea for a project sewing, it will be cool if you show us how to make a kimono, you know those long light jackets. It will fit perferct for the summer haha, have a nice day 😊❤️
Just a tip , always use a zigzag stitch on elastic, when you stretch your elastic with your fabric it can break the stitching , it won’t with a zigzag stitch
@Rory Devin what the heck

Can someone help me understand the hip measurement? I am confused. Thanks so much!! I don't understand what the first markings are.

You can fold the width to the length of the fabric you have
Pero entonces la falda lleva sólo una costura en un lado? O se pone en la espalda?
thank you jess!! this is so beautiful! can I make this in a non stretchy fabric like satin?
You can. But you need to adjust the measurements a bit as the fabric is not stretchy. The waist size need to be bigger than the hip size to be able to wear the dress
Hello Jess, great tutorial, thank you so much :) How do you think this would fit with a sateen fabric? Should i use the same measurements as you did?
No, this technique just works with stretchy fabric only
Thank you for this tutorial Jess. I made this skirt and it came out beautifully.
Wonderful!
Super cute! Can't wait to make this.
Thank you! 😊
I love your video ❤What will this measurements fit? I’m 76+ so might have missed that information. Again I love it. Do you have an easy top video? Thank you !!!

Thank you so much!
Such a useful video! Can't wait to make this skirt.
Have fun!
Hi jess, what kind of thread you used for the elastic waist band?
I use 1cm width of the elastic band for it
Hi thank you for video but if my hips 46 inches I do 23 inches across but how much do I go up for waistline? And how much material should I buy I’m 5’ 8” and love your length .
The fabric you need to buy depend on how long the skirt you want and also the width of the fabric. But usually you need to buy the one at least same with the width of your fabric.
Why am I getting two different measurements when I line up the hip line?
Really beautiful !!

Oh, if your fabric is not stretchy, you can't use this technique. You need to use another tutorial for it. I have one tutorial for it on my channel. You can check it out

Hi! How much fabric did you use? Like width and length?
Hi, I love this tutorial and I'm trying to follow it, but for some reason the marks that I make for my hip measurements are not the same from the top on both sides. I've tried multiple times and even folding the fabric differently but I'm still having the same problem. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Do you know how I could fix this problem? Thanks so much!

Yes, and so easy to make too :)
Thank for your tutorials, Chị. Em tính làm cây này cho vợ.
Cảm ơn em!
Can l use 1 and a half meter material for the skirt..its for a 12 year old
Does it mention anywhere how much fabric you started with?
Wow, this is beautiful 💛💛💛💛💛
Thank you so much!
Thank you will try to make this simple skirt 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you! Everything what you said was so clear💜
You are so welcome
Lovely tutorial. Thank you so much. I feel like I can handle this as a beginner sewer. Can I use fabric that is 90% Polyester, 10% Spandex you think?
Is your fabric stretchy enough? If yes, you can use it
This is so good! So many of the tutorials require me to cut two front and back pieces but my cutting skill is not there yet cause i cant cut them evenly ! Can i use a zipper instead of a elastic ?
Yes, you can if your fabric is not spandex. But if that, you need to check the final width of the waist before adding the zipper.
Ive been looking for diys like this thank you!!!!!
Yeah, let's make it
Did you use a normal straight stich for everything except finishing the inside seam?
Yes, I just use the normal straight stitch for all the seam, except the overlocking seam
@@JessDangDIY thanks for the help, will definitely try it out :)
Have you tried this using a fabric like linen or cotton?
Where do you find this fabric?
For the waist do we use our actual waist measurement or add a few cms since we're using an elastic
It's better to add a sew cms. But don't add too much since the fabric is spandex and stretchy
@@JessDangDIY Thank you! For a non-stretchy fabric like a rayon would I be able to follow this tutorial
Maybe I’m handicapped here, but this is the second time I’ve followed this, and I can’t get the skirt past my thighs?? I have no idea what I’m doing wrong?
Can you make this skirt using cotton gauze?
I'll try to share it soon
Good job👍👍👍🥰🥰🥰

Woooow i love it! Tranks im gonna try it❤❤❤❤🤩
Hope you like it!
does the material have to be stretchy?
Yes, for this DIY
Perfect 😍😍😍😍
Thank you!
Oh hellooo❤❤ im going to make maxi skirt like 100cm how much fabric do I have to buy? Please tell😢
I think you should get around 3m or double the width of the fabric you want to buy.
How many yards of material do you need to make this skirt? Thank you, Mary
I used around 1.2m of fabric
I love how simply you present these projects! Very easy to follow. Did you use an elastic stitch for the hem and waistband? Or just a regular straight stitch?
Thank you. I just used a regular straight stitch for the hem
can this work if you also want to make it with a side slit?
Yes, it still works. Instead of sewing the whole side together like I did in the video, you can keep a bit open to turn it into the side slit
Jess, what amount of fabric would it be needed for a fabric that is 1,5 mts wide? 🤔
Yea, 1.5m would be enough
I love your videos 😍 I'm your new subscriber from 🇵🇭
I'm new to sewing and want to try this simple skirt however I'm a little nervous about the spandex material - is it harder to work with than cotton?
It's just a little hard compare to cotton as it's stretchy. But you can do it!
Thank you 👍🙋♀️🇭🇺🎀!
