I live in Nara. Japan. Which is where Fern Planet/Elfin planet/Fern Planet originated. They formed in high school as Rick Rack - and had a hit single with Soldier Girls. The two women performing are original members. The original drummer went off to college - then later returned. Serena is still around, but took a break from music. It is very, very difficult to make a living as a working musician in Japan. There are various iterations of this song played live by the same band under its various different names, the bassist & lead guitarist Serina are founding members. Rick Rack to Elfin Planet to Fern Planet: all fronted by Serina along with the original & continuing bass player. I saw them, once, performing in the park.

so glad to see this here. I loved Rick Rack, have a CD by them from ages ago. Some really good songs. I was excited when this surfaced a few years back, it seemed like Serina was hinting at a lot more to come.
this track was released around then also and is (IMO) amazing.

and as for Rick Rack tracks, this one is my favorite:

I really hope you dive into at least these 2 tracks, I really hope Serina surfaces again at some point. IIRC Rick Rack was very young with them in school and the original drummer and bassist had to focus on classes and studying. IDK their exact age now, but I'm guessing Serina is in her early 20s now.

There's a lot of very talented musicians (everywhere) that for some reason just don't make it and get discouraged and drop out. Fern Planet was pretty good and I do like their music, but it's a crowded field and it takes something special to rise to the top. If they are no longer active, it's too bad and we can hope that they may re-emerge later. The last two years has probably forced a lot of musicians to get other jobs.

I'm at least marginally sure that Rick Rack was Serina's band *before* FERN PLANET, but admittedly I have yet to read up on her. It seems she has some difficulties keeping a band together, she's an awesome guitarist but there's really long gaps inbetween appearances, and from what I understand FERN PLANET is also broken up already (since 2019? or thereabouts...). Which is quite unfortunate, the other tracks of FERN PLANET i do know of are also really well done.

Many bands are missing that glue that keeps them together.
In case of BAND-MAID, it's Miku who is that "matchless GUM" that formed the band and protected it from the onslaught of the tough world around it. Many genius musicians are very bad at social skills, and can't manage their own careers very well.

@@VladimirChupin So that's the definition of "Matchless Gum". Great song, it's in my favorites playlist, but I had no idea what that term meant, and had assumed it was just another poor translation. :)

@@Rabbi_Rabbs That's what I read about it. I think it was coming from some Japanese fans who understand much more about the meaning of the lyrics, of course.

@@Rabbi_Rabbs "matchless GUM" is Kobato, of course, but Miku herself was not saying it directly. She knows very well that what holds BAND-MAID together, is some mysterious power... which is well-known to everybody, though.
In all religions, it's often mentioned as the power of Love. It's said that this universal power is expressed differently at different levels of creation, but it's all-pervading. On the lowest physical level, it's gravity and nuclear forces, which hold together the atoms and the celestial bodies. On the level of humans, it's that Love which is expressed in trustworthiness, fidelity, and tender affection.
People tend to forget about this great power nowadays, and this neglect and heedlessness lead to broken relationships, splintered families, quarrels at the working place, fights between neighbours, and wars between nations. Love is so simple, yet seems to be so precious and rare today.
And that's why we love BAND-MAID so much-because they are themselves a living embodiment of Love. If you remember that interview, [BAND-MAID "Unseen World" Interview Excerpt from YOUNG GUITAR 2021 February Issue], how Kanami thanked all her bandmates at the end for being so kind and supporting her as a musician-that was so touching! There are not so many bands that cherish their bonds of friendship so much.

yeah, this one usually gets blocked. I don't know the whole history, but I think the guitarist is the same from Rick Rack. Really wish she'd stick with one band and get more traction.

    • @VladimirChupin

Blocking the videos like this is really like shooting oneself in the foot. The band is absolutely unknown to the world at large, and even if someone reacts to it, they block it. Amazing promotion policy...
