It big tangled mess and they won't stay still unless u train them younger. For we had a bull and he didn't let anyone around him. For he wasn't trained.
What a lovely experience that would be brushing a highland calf you could see them mellow all three redheads. Keep the videos coming and Happy Farming.
I would happily halter train and brush the highlands. Morning, noon and night ☺️ I adore these animals ❤️ Tom you do an amazing job and I am extremely jealous.
Hi guys not been watching your chanel for long but caught up, was just watching the one from last year when you were halter training flora with the frosted. Just a small observation when doing this, you use the ssshhhh noise when moving the cattle around the farm, and you were using the same ssshhhh noise to try calm them when halter training. They will associate the ssshhhh noise with you commanding them to move or Wenden on the move, so in theory this may become problematic when trying to calm them. I suggest you use a different noise when trying to calm the animals so they will accociate the new noise with calmness, if you understand what I'm saying, after a while you may find they become calmer when using the new noise to actually calm and train them. Hope this helps. Great videos keep up the hard work, I can see that now the RUclips thing is taking off, how you are trying to move the farm on and bring it up to date to help tie in with the channel, the farming ams the running of the farm. Is hard work but you will get there. You should be proud of what you have achieved so far. Well done
You make me love farm life Tom. Never know this way of life is so intresting. I had a whole other image of farming like hard dirty work that break a person verry joung. I love those videos where you show what farm days look like, what the jobs are and how to do them. I subscribe and will follow you from now on, and maybe i have to get myself a kind single farm man haha i sure can see myself living like you do. Learning on the farm and help out. I look forward to the videos to come, hope you film more about calfs and slurry haha. Anyway, appreciation from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Tom for the first day this was good. I used to help a friend halter train Galloway's and he used to tie them for a week to the stall in the bier and then took them out after the week round the yard for another week. Then learn them to walk on the halter. Do you still halter train the Highlanders?
When your tying a new calf off on the halter, being a man around boats myself maybe try a bowline knot when they are pulling like that as a bowline will never tighten under strain, you do get quick at it and they always undo easily
Look up quick release tie up used for horses. It is strong but with a qick pull on the tail of lead will release quckly. Good for a panicked or frightened animal needing immediate release and safety for yourself.
The way we halter trained our dexters was to pop a halter similar to a horse one with detactchable leads on them as calves and left them on for a week so they got used to the feel of them, left them loose so they could move and the calves could feel it move and get used to that, then we took them off for a day, on for a day for a few weeks, by that point they couldnt care less about having it on or off so was eay going from there. they got a good rub down and a treat aswell which helped. Would of loved some highlands but honestly the dexters where such good temperment and totally bomb proof, they just made everything easy!
ben boxall that does sounds easyer Ben, the struggle was the calves still being on there mums. Yeah we're hard to get hold of and there mums have very big horns hahah
Yeah fair old point on them haha. Looks like the calves started to settle at the end of the video so I doubt you'll have any issues with the calves! I assume the mothers are trained? If not good luck!
Tom, I'm in NYC. So when I see a body-cam perspective, it's usually right before a cop shoots somebody. This video is a new experience for me! Think I'll get a Visa and take a vacation from this place. I would LOVE to brush the highland calves before going back to America. Very therapeutic.
Carlos Robins being around any animals really are so relaxing we’re rearing show calves at the moment and you’d be surprised how just talking to them can be relaxing for them and for you ! When ever you get a chance leave the city and experience the countryside!
Just a tip: Like the dogs, when they're puppies, you should show the halter first and let them smell it before putting it giving them bread as a treat. So you don't waste time fighting with them to put the halter. Love highlands. Greetings from Spain.
Tom, you have to become trustworthy and reliable in their eyes. Not loud and fast moving. The time to do this is the first week of life.....when teaching them the bottle. It does you no good to get loud and animated when they get scared....and most important.....never betry their trust. And finally...they don't speak english. Love the idea.
Hi Tom,my Grandad used tie a bit of twine as a bit collar on young calves, then they get use to him catching them with the end of his cane( like a walking stick) then they always got use to him making a fuss of them , bit of bread or a head scratch , then they got real quiet when he wanted to work close with them , great video again fellor , cheers
Moreteavicar FromEngland yeah I think that would work if they were abit smaller, they might just be getting abit big for that now. Thanks mate I'm glad you liked it 😀
Looks like the Halter training is off to a good start. Hope you didn't get hurt too bad when you were first trying to up the halters on, probably sounded worse than it was.
Ya probably know this already but with the halter, get them on that as calves,as in separate them for like 20/30 minutes every few days and treat them, you’ll be walking them around in no time
Tell the Ginger Warrior that he needs to stop trying to get the knots out on the first day. It hurts! You want her to want you to touch her! Make it feel good. Scritch the itch! And you really need to start on day one. Rubbing, touching, scratching. Get some little oxen halter nose bands made up with rings on each side and a head band that has a ring and snap on one side - the left - for easy and quick on and off and a growing length adjustment buckle on the right. Lead goes through the left hand ring, under chin and snaps onto right hand ring. Have length adjusted ahead of putting it on - then drop the head band behind the poll, nose band lands across the nose, swing the lead under the chin and draw up the slack. Helps if the last foot of the lead before the snap is made of curb chain. It's heavy enough to move easily and it slides easily through rings. Curb chain also doesn't pinch the skin or catch up on the hair. To remove, just unsnap the head band and it all falls away. Make sure that the snap is heavy duty and the hook faces away from the animal's skin - the back of the hook lies against the skin! At this age, it might be easier to make up your own horse 'rope halter' to fit your heifers. Look up the directions on line. They are made with a thinner rope and are uncomfortable for the animal when it chooses to fight. They are commonly used for training Mustangs. When they try to run through the halter, the thin rope bits into their nose and they quickly start yielding to the pressure. But it is sooooo much easier to start when they are babies! A whole lot of 4-H show calves in my past, all the way up to Reserve Champion Showman - the judge later told me the only reason I lost was because I was chewing gum! I never chewed gum, but my cousin offered me a piece just before my final entry into the ring and nervous as I was, I popped it into my mouth and chewed the life out of it - but for cousins with gum?
Maybe u should have given some frosties first! And then your breathing when I got nervous got them nervous you can really hear your breathing with chest camera ! Cute had fun watching u falling was funny too!
You need a 12 year old girl to just sit in the pen and feed them carrots and pet them. Once they love the girl she can get the halters on and go from there. Don't underestimate the power of a nice bovine loving girl. Wish I was 12 and lived in your neighbourhood.
Aren't you even scared that if you make 1 wrong move that they might attack you because I would stroke then and feed them but not do what you do I'd be to scared of the horns
They'll get there. I train cattle all the time and it just takes a little while for them to warm up to you.
So jealous! Wish I could come brush your Highlands! ❤
It big tangled mess and they won't stay still unless u train them younger. For we had a bull and he didn't let anyone around him. For he wasn't trained.

I quite agree about those sharp little horns! Excellent video, Tom.
Wow that is wonderful never thought they would get that far with them

You did very well with now we have halters here that stay on around animals.
When your tying a new calf off on the halter, being a man around boats myself maybe try a bowline knot when they are pulling like that as a bowline will never tighten under strain, you do get quick at it and they always undo easily
Robert S yeah I just don't no how to do that easily at the moment, you just go with what you know
Look up quick release tie up used for horses. It is strong but with a qick pull on the tail of lead will release quckly. Good for a panicked or frightened animal needing immediate release and safety for yourself.
Great job Tom. Do you think this technique would work on my wife ( jk) love the videos
When are the cows going out to the fields great video👍👍👍🐄🐄
Next babies, start when they are a couple weeks old. Also ask your sister about a quick release knot to tie them to the fence.
Beautiful animals

Just a tip: Like the dogs, when they're puppies, you should show the halter first and let them smell it before putting it giving them bread as a treat. So you don't waste time fighting with them to put the halter. Love highlands. Greetings from Spain.

Wow . I didn't know you need to train cows ... I was like ,they all are naturally smart and lovely .😆
Do you have to keep your animals in a shed during winter by law in the uk or is it up to the farmer to choose what he want
Especially the big 1ns r their names toffee and flora

Dara McHugh I think I ate most of them 😂
Tom Pemberton Farm Life haha 😂
what was you doing by 6:03 🤣😂
🤣🤣🤣
Thessa Vogelzang 😂 I got rumbled
Maybe you ought to start with some free Frosties, just to get their trust.
Maybe u should have given some frosties first! And then your breathing when I got nervous got them nervous you can really hear your breathing with chest camera ! Cute had fun watching u falling was funny too!
we used to tie the leads of the halters to a donkey and the would have to follow the donkey and in less than a day they would be halter broken
Harrison Carpenter NO way! Might try it with my sisters horses 😂
are you going to put them in calf or sell them
Helena Byrne in calf in a few years I think hopefully
Are they hard to catch
Alfie Joe yes very hahah
Do you show Cattel I do
Apples or pears would be a nicer treat
a higlands frindge is called a dosan
J a Dosan? I never knew that

It went better than expected. But imagine doing with the mothers as you said it just wouldn't be possible.
Aaron Townsend not with the horns about, that would have been pretty stupid hahah

When ever u tie them up mage sure u stay with them in case they slip
Connor Coleman yeah I always do, make sure I can see them all the time
Tom Pemberton Farm Life ye that is gow we do it

Aren't you even scared that if you make 1 wrong move that they might attack you because I would stroke then and feed them but not do what you do I'd be to scared of the horns
Why do you give them cereal
Jack Cliffe it's full of sugar, so it's like a treat
Jx
They need to were halter all day and not tie them up. After that you can add a lead rope to it
Tier them to a donkey wee did that the donkey just stands there ands won’t take any nonsense
it's easier to work with them with halters
thomas wright and a lot safer
when my dad was working on a farm the bull plowed through the wall of the shed
Haha
You are so clumsy lol
your crasy
Robert Shufflebotham hahah the horns are abit scary arnt they
