‘I Did Him So Bad’: Alex Murdaugh’s Lawyer Disputes Potential Confession to Son’s Murder

- Alex Murdaugh’s lawyer pressed special agent Jeff Croft over the recollection of a police interview he did with the disgraced attorney in June 2021. “According to your testimony, he says “I did him so bad,” Jim Griffin said challenging the officer’s testimony from the prior day. Griffin then repeatedly played an audio clip from the interview to allow the jury to decide what the disbarred South Carolina lawyer actually said about his son Paul on the night he was killed.

To me, it sounds like he's saying "I" with a crying "aaa" sound before saying "I"
I knew someone like Alex many years ago. When I asked how they could live with what they had done? That person said it didn't bother them.
I'm from South Carolina and if you aren't used to the accent, it may sound like he said, "I", but he definitely said, "they".
Exactly! Just like an auctionare, most people can't understand the accent.
This is one of those things that is highly suggestible, I heard “They did him so bad” the second time and every time since but the first time I went in expecting to hear “I did him so bad” and I did hear it that way.
Happened to me too. I now believe he said "they"
When they slowed it down it was clear he didn't say "I". What I heard every time is "it was so bad", I can't hear an "I" or a "they".
@@retro000 that isn't evidence. Juries are supposed to look at evidence, not their own preconceived idea of what someone should look like while being on trial for murder.
same if you slow it down its a clear they though.
@@retro000 but that isnt demonstrative evidence the jury is only supposed to consider demonstrative evidence. my gut feeling is that hes guilty but thats irrelevant to objective reality.
I heard "it's just so bad, I did him so bad". The jury will probably have the chance to hear the recording with ear buds which hopefully will sound clearer than what we are actually hearing.
he says they
I heard I. I hope the jury can it hear as you said with earbuds and slowed down and much clearer. It seems like he said something similar in the police car. I think he was subconsciously telling the truth….that he killed them. I think he knew he was about to be exposed for all the money he stole and the drug habit he had.
@@Maddiehere89 This was him saying he killed them. Instantly the mood in the car changed. Even Alex changed! They all knew he just said about his son Paul...."I did him so bad!".
He says I
@@jjb494 theres no chance. clearly says they. he also used two guns to make it look like two shooters so he was going along with his plan
"ITS JUST SO BAD, I DID SO BAD"
Even closed caption agrees with me as well!!!
I think he said “they.” This is why we gave a jury of our peers. Let’s hope they are treated with respect because this one’s not easy. Dude is going down for many crimes either way.
he did. they.
n if it was I it was regret not from killing but raising his son.
He needs curb $tomped godspeed
He may be a scumbag POS but I can’t see him doing this and the SLED dropped the ball like they have many times before.
Nope he definitely said "I did him so bad" The word THEY makes a long A sound, he said I.
He said, "they". At 7:56 lower playback speed, it's clear.
Sounds like he said THEY did him so bad
How would he know there were two shooters to reference... they...
Some use they singularly…but I see your point!
He definitely said THEY
I find the interesting that his lawyer was there when sled arrived
He is a lawyer. They are friends. We have friends that are lawyers and police. They would come to my side if anything horrid was to happen. Don't be manipulated by the Prosecutor.
I agree with the above comment plus he would know the first person they look at is the significant other and probably wanted someone more level headed than he would be, in a moment like that, to protect himself.
@@gern5168 In a moment like that he caused
@@parkermarie4374 either way I think he would still want another lawyer there watching and listening. Even if he caused it his thoughts and emotions are gonna be all over the place.
Even if he said “they” it makes me think that he hired hitmen.
He might’ve said they referring to the killer
That's why i was thinking. Cuz technically he ain't lying they did do him bad
👍
Yep. Thought the same.
Good point! I never thought of that. Hence the two guns.
Looking at all his other wrong doings, Murdaugh is a sick man … so many others have lost a loved one because of this family … the fact that Murdaugh denies that he was at the dog kennels, is already an admission of guilt …
I clearly hear “I did it so bad.” Neither “they” nor “him”. 8:09
I heard "I did him so bad" in normal speed and "they" in 1/3 speed. The defendant is telling the truth in my opinion. He heard it in real time and was right there with him
I heard "they" first, then "they" when everyone was saying "I" then heard "they" when they slowed it down to 1/3
Guilty
The person testifying on the stand is not the defendant.
The defense attorney is using the 1/3 speed playback coupled with the defendants thick accent to their advantage. In real time, I hear “I did him so bad” we’ll have to wait and see what the jury finds.
@@carsonheiney723 that's what I heard him say too
He says “I”…clear as day
The jury will hear differently as they will replay the tape over and over. I have been told my hearing is excellent and I 100 percent guarantee he says " they" not I. Need to be an active listener.
Maybe make an appointment with an audiologist
@@shaunoneil4705 Ok, Shaun.
Yup!!!!!
Nothing is clear as day in that tape
"They" doesn't absolve him of anything.... he could be referring to some of his drug added cohorts he used drugs from and hired "them" do this, or promised them some type of future consideration. Remember, he hired someone to shoot AT him as he sat on the side of the road, then claimed it was an assassination attempt on his life. Then signed himself into a drug rehab.
I believe that I listened to it objectively and still hear they. He is smart enough to not confess with a slip up.
There’s no evidence in this case so far that shows he did this. Did SLED drop the ball? Yes maybe so but if they would have done a better job investigating and analyzing I think it would be another person/s on trial.
same ive listened to it about 20 times and even slowed it down. its they although i assume he did it.
He said they. And if he said I that still isn’t enough for a conviction.
No question "It's A HOUSE!"
This will backfire if they bring it to the jury; it sounds like “they” to me and feels like they are trying to manipulate you into believing otherwise.
I hear, "I did him so bad".
I heard they and the transcript says they. I agree this will backfire with the jury.
I disagree. I heard "It's just so bad, I did him so bad"
Sounds like "I" to me
@@mytubaiscold1 Did you hear "I" when the recording was slowed down? Clearly it was "They" when the recording was slowed down. The police officer didn't even react to it at the time. Now he said he heard I. Highly doubtful..
That defense lawyer would try to queaze orange juice out of a lemon.
I would want a defense like that, especially if I was innocent.
I did him so bad, could mean he regrets how he treated his son in the past. It doesn't mean an admission to me....if the cop thought it was an admission he WOUld indeed have asked him what do you mean by that !
The dudes a criminal defense attorney who killed his family. You think he'd make a mistake when he does this for a living?
That's a funny thing to say when you see your son and wife murdered.
I think he paid someone to help kill them. (He may have killed his wife & someone else killed his son?)
@@TotesMAGoats69 Alex Murdaugh was a personal injury attorney and previously part time prosecutor.
No at one point he was a legit prosecutor
Watching this trial I can’t help but think of the show how to get away with murder
I think about how to get away with murder too.
Even though I’m never going to kill anyone ever!
Whether he physically did this on his own or he had help, imo he is guilty. I believe he did this for money. He's a privileged, crooked, greedy man who has been involved in several suspicious events (cleaner, Stephen Smith). This whole family makes me sick.
1) Alex voice is recorded on his murdered son Paul's phone.......that mean the time of the murders HE WAS THERE !
2) Alex did not know when he call 911, that the RECORDER was RECORDING before the OPERATOR pick up the phone ..............and was COMPLETE SILENCE from ALEX............no heavy breathing , no crying, no screaming for help ! ........Alex start the heavy breathing and crying AFTER THE OPERATOR PICK UP THE PHONE !
3) ALEX, after he found his WIFE and SON DEAD, he did not call the police and 911.....................instead went to his mother's house !
4) This guy seems he can do anything for MONEY ! .....................And he look after INSURANCE MONEY !
5) There was in the past some deaths, of people working for HIM !!!
6) ALEX plan his OWN DEATH with a shot to his HEAD to collect insurance money.
7) STAY AWAY from a such PERSON !!!
everyone knows hes guilty but theres still no demonstrative evidence proving that he did it.
@@rileysmall4317 I dont know that he is guilty, theres literally ZERO conclusive evidence so far... IF he did it, the state is doing an awful job at showing it. And a lot of the points that efstratios mentioned are outright incorrect, even his own defense said otherwise. Efsatisos is clearly not very good at english.
@@Laborchet my gut feeling is that he did it due to the fact not one tear came out of his eyes when he was talking to the cop in the car and hed often quickly switch from full on hysteria to calmly answering the next question. Hes a physchopath or sociopath but whether he did it or not isnt known yet, its just my opinion that he did it or got someone to do it. You are correct there is no conclusive evidence but anyone with common sense or insight into basic human behaviour can spot fake emotion and thats what hes displayed so far. Of course its possible that he had nothing to do with the murders and he just happens to be a phsychopath/sociopath.
Mr. Alex???? What does that say about the witness.
Imagine "when can I go home" getting construed as "I did it" because that's what the detective heard, but no they didnt ask a follow up at the time. The jury can decide what they hear, but on the record I still hear I did it and no one can tell me that's not what I hear.
I heard "I" as well. And I'm from SC
I can see how you could hear it that way. There's no excuse for not asking for clarification as a detective investigating a crime, especially if you truly think you heard an admition.
@@Elizabeth-wz4nh After listening to that clip quite a few times I'm convinced that I heard 'I did them so bad'.
This argument is only one of hundreds we're in for. Bottom line, he was at the kennel, and we KNOW he was. If he didn't kill them or buy the hit, why would he lie about his location?
All I can think about is how this kid killed that young girl while driving a boat drunk.
Yep. Very sad. And you bring up a point. Lots of people are angry, feel like he got away with murder. The brother and boyfriend swore they would get revenge...did they? They said it on video on the documentary. Why didn't police look into it.
@@puppywhispers1 I didn’t even know about this. Any idea where I could see this?
@@puppywhispers1 I didn’t even know about this. Any idea where I could see this?
I DEFINITELY HEARD "I"..... I DID IT SO BAD.
He seems to have an emotional reaction to how he died (when your brain explodes typically wouldn’t consider that an “honorable” or “humane” choice as a sniper type of execution might) but not much about the fact that they’re both gone. Just something I noticed
in the cop car he goes from hysterical to completely calm whenever asked a question. also sounds like a kid having a hissy fit rather than genuine sadness, imo hes just faking that emotion. especially considering theres never any tears.
"They did him so bad." is what was said. There is so much reasonable doubt and this guy saying that at one third speed he still can't admit the word is "they" is total BS!
Agree
Grasping at straws here. You’re right, there’s a ton of reasonable doubt here. I think the jury will still convict him because he seems like an unlikeable criminal. I have doubts about whether he killed his family though.
I agree Steph
@@stephaniewinokur6383 I hear you and it's too bad the outcomes are determined like this. It reminds you of the O.J. jury mentality except in the "I don't like this person" direction.
1/3 speed is manipulation of evidence, it’s not what he heard that day in person (“I” not “they”)
So why would anyone else have motive to kill them?
I think he's going to get away with this.
If you tell me he said, "I," that's what I hear, but if you still me he said, "they," I hear that too lol.
Everyone keeps going on and on and about 2 shooters because.. How do you carry two guns.. Really? There are shoulder straps that attach to guns. Hunters use them all the time.
I used to hunt, and I sometimes carried a rifle and a shotgun at the same time. You just need shoulder straps and a little practice to switch guns smoothly.
Exactly!!!
So what???? And that's evidence of what exactly?
One shooter obviously
They showed the shotgun in court, no sling.
Defendant said “It is so bad.” I listened to the tape several times.
The part after "It is so bad" is the part that is in dispute.
"I" did him so bad = I killed him. "They" did him so bad = I hired hit men to kill him. Either way, he killed him!
Evidence is all circumstantial, and the investigators made a lot of mistakes making it hard for the prosecution. I expect this guy to walk unless something big comes out
💯
This is a bad guy, but there not a single piece of evidence unequivocally linking him to the murder. I get it, people want to see him hang. But people lack a real understanding of “beyond a reasonable doubt”.
I dont think saying they automatically means he hired hit men. If you came across someone murdered and had no idea who did it, a logical response could be look what they did to him/her.
I turned on closed caption and it read “I”.
The thing is if it was I why not question him further on that
I listened many times, and at different speeds. I keep hearing :’ IT IS JUST SO BAD. IT’s GETTING SO BAD’
What a wasted rabbit hole....he said THEY
He said, "It is So Bad". That's what I hear.
Good point
Then after that he had I did him so bad! There were 2-3 similar statements as he kept repeating himself
@@jeanniep8816 Let me listen again.
I heard it he Said THEY DID HIM SO BAD !
I hear They ! Joel
Hey absolutely said "THEY"... no doubt about it.
HE SAID, I HEARD I ⚠️⚠️⚠️
Important to look at THAT statement in context....
What was spoken to him by the interrogator,...and what is/was his response?
I think the defence was quite happy to distract with this pretty meaningless comment in the scheme of things..
Lets focus on that alleged snapchat footage of Alec with Paul and Maggie right before the shooting, when he was supposedly up at the house.
In my opinion, probably the reason he was looking for Paul's phone straight after shooting him.
I think a lot of the tears are because he wasn't expecting such a blood bath, loss of brain from head cavity etc, gruesome scene..
I think he felt terrible that things had come to this, but in his demented addict mind, he had to killed them to coverup what was potentially being exposed about him. The bringing to light of his corruption brought about due to Paul's boat accident and subsequent law suits.
So many skeletons in this family's closet..
Yes I agree
Thought the same thing about the defendant inexplicably searching the son's dead body for the phone.
That didn't made any sense, except if he was trying to dispose of the device to destroy evidence, and eventually decided against it to avoid being found suspicious. After all the son was messaging, and his father lied about not being there present at the crime scene.
For me, the most damning evidence is the nurse’s testimony. His mother’s caregiver said he visited for 20 minutes and told her to double that time if anyone asked.
1/3 speed ? c'mon, sounds like crap.
There is a BIG difference: “I” vs. “They”
I heard Alex say, "It's just so bad, I did it so bad," there's no if's and's or but about it! Alex Murdaugh's lawyers need to clean their ears and get hearing aids!
Not standing for jury...wow thats a 1st for me!
He said they. And that guy on the stand knows it. He's lying under oath.
Starts around 7:40. How has no one provided a time stamp for this?! You're welcome.
I let a cop listen and he said they , but I hear I ugh 🤷🏼♀️😑
It’s just so bad.
I hear back peddling with the man on stand.
He CLEARLY said ‘They.’ People hear what they want to
This is one of those things where you can hear it both ways depending on what you're listening for. Like when they change the lyrics to a song by showing you different words, and all of a sudden you now hear it another way. There is no way to really know what he said. They should have questioned him further on this!
The statement is strange in any case. “They/I did him so bad.”
Actually he was brutally killed. He wasn’t “done bad.” How he says it is the strange thing to me.
No it’s a southern drawl thing it’s his accent and phrases he would use given his age and where he’s always lived it’s a really common expression actually used in the southern states the more your around it the more you realize it doesn’t really stick out as much as it does to someone hearing it who doesn’t encounter it frequently
Means the same thing
Have you never met a person who speaks differently from you?
not from the south kid
Yeah I dont really understand the context of this statement , and since these incompetent investigators never followed up to establish both context and clarification, we dont know... and so its odd the prosecution is even speculating? I also, dont understand why the prosecurion is pushing for "they" ? when "I" is exactly what they are looking to establish? That was odd to me? Unlesss im wrong here and that was the defense and not the prosecution? But that would make way more sense to me if this was the defense pushing to doscredit the context of this sound clip for both clarity & context. It almost is heresay as we dont know what all has been said prior to lead up to this statement? etc.
At normal speed I couldn't decipher whether it was I or They. Then I also slowed down the recording twice at 2 different levels and definitely heard "THEY did him so bad".
That could mean anything
Not really! They were staring right at Paul’s dead body! It meant Alex shot him so bad because his head is blown up and brains are all over!
This is one of those things where you can hear it both ways depending on what you're listening for. Like when they change the lyrics to a song by showing you different words, and all of a sudden you now hear it another way. There is no way to really know what he said. They should have questioned him further on this!
I've played it for people that didn't even know this happened and the all said its they
From this original audio, I only hear "I". The only time I hear "they" is when it's a recording of a recording, which introduces digital artifacts.
I hear they
I heard..."It's so bad, they did him so bad". It's not fact it's just how my brain translated it 🤷♀️ It seems a little TOO slow. If I were a juror, I'd like to hear that statement at various speeds.
It sounds to me like he said ‘I did it so bad’ not they or him and in response to the question of it being tough of having to talk through what happened?
Sounds like he is saying "I did him so bad"
I listened several times and I cannot tell exactly what he said with his accent and in his emotional state. Not sure if the jury Will understand it clearer being from that area. But if I were on the jury, I would pretty much disregard this statement as I cannot be sure (certainly not beyond a reasonable doubt) what exactly he said or meant that night (in this instance.)
I hear they but I don’t know
I hear, "I." Especially when slowed down.
Declare him Guilty would be to do Justice. IMAO
It's they not I and I'm hearing impaired
People tend to die around him just like Lori vallow
They should hang out, lol.
Yes they do....
They certainly do.
true
I think that becasue it cannot be differentiated between I or they it makes it irrelevant
They!!!! They!!!! They!!!! I want justice but I want the right one to be brought to justice and right now it's too early to tell
Totally totally completely agree and 2nd your statement
Can you enlighten us on who has a better motive to kill them then him?
The prosecution can't even introduce there own motive since they waiting for the motion which the judge said he will wait for the trail to continue then see if the door is open so they might not even give motive
@Karen Fyhr Did you watch the documentary about the boat accident? The girls brother said he was going to get revenge. He said it on camera. The girls boyfriend also wanted revenge. Maybe one of them, and the mom was a witness, so she was murdered. Still puts doubt on the father/husband.
The cops really messed up this Investigation
Before the court case started i thought for sure he was guilty and part of me still does but if I was a juror, I don't think I could convict him after hearing things the cops and investigators messed up. Even moreso today after hearing the recording and slowing it down but moreso hearing the detective never wrote down or followed up questioning what he meant by the supposed confession. This detective just sat there and said 2 or 3 times if they heard someone say what they thought was a confession they would most definitely follow up at some point. But did they? No. That is crazy! And that he didn't even write it down. He made a mental note. Well you can't prove your mental notes. Interesting to see what the verdict is.
I hope this man is not getting out free! It would be a shame!
Innocent until proven guilty. We should remember that. There must be overwhelming evidence he actually did the act, as of now, it is only circumstantial.
I hope one day someone will judge you the same way
Wow that’s not how it works Thea.
He should serve time for all the financial wrongs he done to innocent folks
@@uMADden totally separate case
The defense counsel seems to be grasping at straws, at anything. He doesn’t have a case.
no question about it
When you grasp at the same straw, over and over…and over, it’s more like wanking straws.
Actually, if you don’t pay attention to Facebook and read other peoples ignorant comments this is actually really good for defense. They are tearing apart the prosecutors case with doubt, and not doing a terrible job, making detectives seem I’ll prepared and quite frankly showing how poor of a job they all did that night. They may be “straws” but his execution is resonating loud and clear with this witness.
I actually feel completely the opposite. Not seeing ANY evidence which clearly says he is certainly guilty. That being said I am no fan of his and want justice done. Need more compelling evidence to convict on murder. Much doubt with the evidence presented so far.
Nah the defense is doing a great job. You have to try to step into the shoes of a jury who has to find hard evidence. Only 1 has to be convinced that the hard evidence is lacking here. Law enforcement made mistakes and that alone can be ground to sway as a jury member.
LMAO . definitely says " I " only a lawyer with no defense will try to confuse the jury with such nonsense .
The transcript said they.
The "TH" is very apparent

SC native here. I have my own thoughts on what this guy did or didn't do, but in the lowcountry drawl, an "I" sounds like an "AAHH" after stepping on a lego. The plaintiff should focus more on the fact that the wife's phone wound up by the road, far away from her body, after being tampered with. Don't give his attorneys means to fight his case based on an audio recording other parts of the nation hear differently
