- This absurdly long video follows my journey with building a Chinese manufactured Hawk DLX EFI 250 motorcycle. And yes, it came from Amazon. It was a fun project, even if I had no idea what I was doing on the way in. :)
[18Nov21] Here's a link to the checklist I mention in the video - it's more of a guideline than a bullet-pointed list of things to check off, but it's useful for people new to these bikes:

[09Mar21] Wow. Totally forgot to put the link in for the place where I took the MSF course:

This video is a lot longer than I had intended, but that's how it came out. It might be easier for you to just jump around and find the bits you've got a particular interest in. If you do, please throw a link in the comments with the time code of the bit you found useful.
Is there anything you'd like to see covered in a follow up to the build? If so, please leave a comment and let me know. There will be a follow up video to this.
Thanks to you all for watching!
Buying this bike at 17 years old literally the exact video I was looking for thankyou
You're welcome!
Computer guys are perfect bike owners because they love numbers and tolerances. When you maintain specs and tolerances, you are rewarded with your bike starting and a victory ride!😂😂😂😂😂
I cant believe you can order a motorcycle on Amazon! I love the DIY aspect of this. I may have to check it out.
You should very very nice bikes I just got one and I'm super happy
Been watching videos about these bikes for a few days and came across yours. Yeah it was a bit long but so what. It was fun and informative to watch out here in my workshop. Especially liked the end when you forgot to attach the spark plug wire. Nice job not editing that part out cause I've been there too and glad to see someone with a sense of humor about it.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I tend to leave in the mistakes when I make them - because chances are someone else might do the same thing, and if they see me do it, it might save them from the same silly thing.
Welcome to the Chinabike community!
You are correct, all bikes, including Japanese ones, come in a crate. In the Chinabike case, *you* are the dealer/prepper.
“It’s a motorcycle in a box!” 👁👄👁 I wholeheartedly agree with your astonishment. I first got involved with this from Bikes and Beards as well, and it blows my mind that any person with $2,100 (for anyone reading, you can buy the base model for just $1,400) can just buy a dual sport motorcycle on a whim. AND the fact that it comes in a box, in the mail 😂😂
The only problem is when a buyer gets fixated on the cost without asking WHY it's that cheap. You can tell just by reading the reviews of this and other bikes on Amazon, what kind of buyer you have. The angry ones had no clue as to what they were getting into. The positive ones did their research and were fully aware they weren't getting a dealer-prepped, turn-key motorcycle.
these things are so much cheap fun, I have 200 miles on mine now. I have been doing small modifications and 2 oil changes now as part of the break in. Have fun and be safe.
Appreciate the video.. I just bought one last week. Should be here soon so I'm doing everything I can to research this bike as well. I've only ever ridden a bike a few times and not very long so I'm basically a new rider and owner. Between this video and other info ive gone over, hopefully I'm knowledgeable enough to not screw anything up haha. Thanks!
Good luck! Make sure you take the time to take a Basic Rider Course from the MSF!
Did you get your bike yet?
@@TheSlashSlingingSlasher i did yes.. was pretty fun putting it together. put almost 1,000 miles on it so far. Also did the basic rider course but the classes were so full up i ended up putting around 400mi on the bike before the class so it was really easy to pass. Mainly did backroad riding with lots of mountain roads/gravel and occasional trails. I gotta say im lovin the bike though. Only issues ive come across so far is the battery and possible spark plug. Would probably help if i had a trickle charger but im gonna replace the battery as well. Since getting it, ive added brush guards, seat pad, tail bag, phone mount and i also had to get a new gear shifter cause the stock one was too close to the foot peg for my size 13 feet lol. ive also changed out the front sprocket but had a hard time changing the rear.. they used red locktite on the bolts for the rear sprocket.. why???... smh.. so i gotta get some brake cleaner and see if thatll loosen it, otherwise ill have to borrow a buddys torch and see if i can heat it up. ive also done 2 oil changes and cleaned/lubed the chain. i have a new xring chain to throw on but im gonna wait until i get the rear sprocket changed out. next on the list is a new clutch lever cause the stock one is pretty big, sticks out a lot and i had to bend the brush guards to fit a certain angle to avoid any issues with the lever. all in all... really fun bike!
The joy on your fucking face when it started convinced me, pal. I'm getting one so that I can dance with going bananas too.
I have pretty much the same story I wanted to start riding to. run across bikes and beards and their Amazon bikes took my msf at Harley-Davidson and got my endorsement. Now I'm just saving up for the bike. Crazy
Welcome to the community buddy! I’ve got a TBR7 and a new Hawk on the way! You’ll love these CG upsized clones. Subscribed!
Thanks! First "real" ride will be on Saturday, after I've got the replacement gas tank and fuel pump installed. Yes, there will be video of that. :D
Hey where in NC are you??? I’m in Greensboro
Just got my 2022 dlx up and running, made sure to reconnect my spark plug after adjusting valves and was extra careful removing the plastic over the battery, thanks ;) lol
(side note: they now come with sealed batteries and black fork guards)
\o/
Bought mine used for $400 and it's a little ruff around the edges but runs freaking great. It's a 2019 and basically when I bought it the speed-O didnt work. And some of the plastics were broken and missing. But I've road the hell out of it and already got my money worth out of it in my opinion. Plan on buying new plastic kit I found the whole kit for $100 online. Gonna do that and upgrade the front sprocket to a 17 tooth. And new led lights and a new digital gauge cluster. I found everything for around 250 bucks. Literally for everything I named. All coming soon.
Best $400 I've ever spent tho. The bike runs like a scalded dog and is so much fun to ride. I only ride it in the woods on trails and back roads but it's a blast and the wife loves to hope on the back and she rides with me all the time. We love our 400 dollar bike. Hahaha
@@country0800 how's your bike running now?
Thanks for your help with the speedometer sensor, fixed my issue with it not reading.
I'm not sure it was me, but thanks! :)
Huge tip for the people who ain't got a person to help lift it or a jack to put the bolt in for the sway arm or the front tire on lay it on the ground no fluids are in the bike yet and its way easier to work on.
It is filled with oil. Granted, it's crap oil and should be drained and replaced before the first ride, but it's still there. With this bike, the swing arm is mounted, but the swing arm-end of the shock isn't.
even the best mechanics can forget that
Wish I had a garage like that lol I’d be in there making noise an it would be done tonight ✅
Cool video! Keep up the good work
at 1:09:05 I actually jumped forward from my chair to catch that damn motorcycle, (seen that done before) I was yelling for you to watch it but I guess you couldn't hear me. liked the video thanks (I had to subbed you deserve it)
I'm just glad I caught the damn thing. Dumping it BEFORE the first ride is just bad form. :D Thanks for the sub!
I had a hell of a time installing my headlight shroud too. Thanks for the info on how to correct the alignment
You're welcome!
Please post updates on how the EFI system is going! We need more information in the community. EFI is new for China bikes, I’d love to see it be a huge success!
I will! I got two days of puttering around my field before the over-tightened bolts on the fuel pump caused it to crack and leak fuel all over my shop floor. The replacement tank (bolt caps leak) and fuel pump arrived on 7/28. I'm going to do a video on Saturday that will cover the issue and the replacement of the pump & tank.
f15sim that’s the beauty of these bikes being so modular!
Go carb- it's cheaper and more reliable over time- u can re pipe and remove the airbox. Save the $500
good video.
I'm going to look into purchasing one just like this
Thank you for the video. I will be mostly doing this in a few months myself. I have rode in the past and did some work myself. I think I will pay someone to help me with the adjustments of the engine parts etc. Lol. I will hopefully learn from him or her a hands on type setting. I am 6'4" 215lbs. So I am looking for a bike for a tall rider. Looking forward to see more videos on how it is going.
You're welcome! It's a great beginner's bike for those that are comfortable wrenching on it.
Bro your laugh at the end made this vid great lmaooo
Mine came with a CD. Does anyone know where I can print up a PDF?
Ya all things considered nice job, being a mechanical guy some things you did/said I got triggered by however that laugh with the discovery of that spark plug wire was joyful and genuine. Nice video :)
Thanks!
Thankfully I had a co worker help me with getting the tires on that is a heavy bike for sure I just got mines and I'm slowly finishing putting it together cant wait to ride it nice video
The trick is to get one of those cheap atv/motorcycle jacks from Harbor Freight. It's very handy to have when working on the bike. I hope you enjoy the Hawk, it's been a fun bike.
How has the bike been?
Awesome walkthrough I wanted to buy one but putting all that together has got me kinda Leary to do it but you did a great job thanks for sharing your experience and still would like to buy and do it
If you're careful and pay attention, it's a pretty easy process. Good luck!
Great video thanks for the info and a good laugh
You're welcome!
Great video. Just make sure you keep the beer in the fridge before you ride. Got 100,000 MI and 20 years under my belt.. Almost every time I had an issue on the bike, AKA an accident. There was at least a sip of beer in me. Keep the sticky side down..
Great advice. I don't drink unless someone else is driving and I haven't been a passenger on a motorcycle in 45 years, so... ;)
Welcome to the family!! Great video! And everyone is a beginner or newbie at some point! Also that is a really good starter bike EFI must be nice
Thanks! It's very nice being able to avoid all the of the carb tweak/replacement shuffle that the "standard" Hawk/TBR7/etc. have. Especially for a newbie that doesn't grok engines at all. :)
f15sim I'm one of those guys who never tries to stop improving 😂 so if you ever go down the trail of modifying the EFI hawk like an exhaust/ported head/higher compression I would be really interested how how to tune one!!
Loc tite is a good idea, but I would recommend blue for that axle nut instead of red
Agreed. I'm going to be swapping to a 45 rear sprocket over the weekend (as well as a different swing arm) and Blue will be used throughout the process.
You can adjust the rear shock so the bike will be lower. It has an adjustable nut you can adjust with a screwdriver and hammer.
...or you can use a hook spanner. ;)
You a beast at your age man . I’m watching this as I comment . It’s 10 pm upstate Ny hope your staying safe an very great long detailed vid . I’m almost done building mine an going over shit by watching this . Fucking bike is big lol
Hes got some serious calves on him for sure.
Next time when you put a front rim on use something under the tire to lift it.
What, and make it easy? :)
congratulations ! nice , impressive , good build
loved the whole video. thank you
You're welcome!
Interesting, amusing, frustrating. Now go and enjoy it!
(Safely)
Working on it!
Was this better or worse than your first 3D printer kit build? (rostock MAX v1)
Ha! Awesome question. :D It was actually a lot easier due to the number of folks that had assembled this bike or the Hawk 250. Their efforts put me way ahead of the curve. Say hi to Mark & Brian for me! :)
I did not get the bolt pakage in my new bike. Batteracid missing. Anyone run into this trouble. What to do. Waiting for responce from company I bought from. This is terrible.
I second that nicely written intro.
Thanks! It wasn't written though - just me babbling at the camera. ;)
Muy buen trabajo y muy divertido jajajaj saludos desde Argentina
I came across this video and was pleasantly surprised to see you did all your checks…lol. It made me cringe when you put the locktite on the axel bolts…lol. Eventually your gonna be cussing yourself when you have to change tires.
The tube is red, but the Loctite is blue. ;) I sold the Hawk and bought a 2021 Royal Enfield Himalayan. The guy I sold it to put 1500 miles on it and sold it to the next newbie in line. :)
Just got the hawk 250, cannot find the front wheel bushing any where. Where did you find it when unboxing? Thank you!
I wish I could tell you Nathan, but it's been 2+ years. Sorry!
its kinda funny hearing the story about july and then building thing bike in july
F15: Nice Job! Thanks for adding much more to the Hawk database! Question: What is your height and inseam? I am 5'10" with a 31 or 32 inseam. Wondering about fit as I hear many remarks about the size and height of the Hawk. Thanks again!
I'm 5'11 with a 32" inseam and I had no issues with the height of the Hawk. Glad you liked the video!
@@f15sim Thank you for the response. BTW, loved your reaction to the spark plug and your joy when the bike fired right up! Taking on the valve adjustment right off the bat during assembly was a courageous move! You bolstered my confidence quite a big as that seems to be a good time to do the adjustment. May I ask, do you still have the bike and how I'd it doing? Thanks again for adding to the Hawk knowledge base!
@@MichaelWhite-cx4ho Yeah, I felt like a complete idiot when I noticed the plug wire. 🤣 The valve adjustment is very simple to do - just take your time with it. I put probably 500 miles on it and sold it for a bit more than I originally paid for it. I've now got a Royal Enfield Himalayan.
@@f15sim Not at all! I give you a ton of credit for taking the job on! Plus, you figured out the plug disconnect immediately. "Dork in the Road," another great source of information regarding "Chinabikes," once kept shorting out the electric on a Brozz 250 Recon build by repeatedly installing his battery with poles reversed. In either case, way better than me taking a 25 foot slide down the side of a building on a ladder because I didn't have the base properly set! I'll never have to worry about being rejected by the military for having flat feet, and you'll never have to worry again about building a "Chinabike" and forgetting to connect the plug wire! Thanks again for the video! It'll definitely help if/when I ever build a "bike-in-a-box," something I've been trying to get to for awhile now!
@@MichaelWhite-cx4ho How on earth can you hook up the battery backwards?! 🤣
I think if I get one of these I'm paying for full preassembly and test.
You can adjust the rear shock to lower it.
Yep. Turns out I didn't need to. I just needed to get used to the height.
love these Chinese bikes!
The Chinese fuel injection is for newbie city types. Get the carb, ditch the giant airbox and re pipe it! Itl blow the injection away! Open up it's potential!
Can't you put the bike on a center stand?
Or a Brick with wood block's.
I got it up on a Harbor Fright bike jack eventually.
that bike looks even sexier naked
Did you get a replacement for the side plastic and where did you get it? I did the exact same thing you did just got my DLX yesterday.
I didn't get a replacement - the existing remaining mounting points are enough to keep it in place. That being said, there's a number of websites out there that have those parts. You might check txpowersports.com
I'm not sure if I missed where you said it, but would you mind sharing a link or where I might find the checklist you were referring to during the build process? Thanks so much
I don't think I ever got around to making the checklist available. I'll see if I can find the document and I'll update the description with a link. Thanks for asking about it.
Link added in the description!
@@f15sim Thank You!
@@warrencook9340 You're welcome!
I’m trying to start a RUclips channel too lol I subscribe
Where is the fuel valve I have a 2021 efi and can't find it
Motorcycles with EFI don't have fuel shutoff valves.
@@f15sim thank you 😊
@@Alias333 YW!
Mine had 0. 2 miles on it . Hope I don’t have to adjust valves an they did
At a minimum, you must check the valve clearance. You'll want to check it again at 100 miles. It's very easy to do, so don't worry about doing it. If you remove the fuel tank, you'll have more room to work and it'll be easier to see what you're doing.
satisfying plastic removal sounds
Yeah, that's why I left it for last. :D
How tall are you
what is better about EFI?
It's my understanding that the carburetor equipped Hawk runs very lean and in order to adjust it, you either have to defeat the anti-tamper screws in the carburetor and replace the jets, or replace the carburetor entirely. I've been told that EFI Hawks have much better gas mileage as well, but I haven't checked to see what mileage I'm getting out of mine yet.
Can someone roughly measure the length of the front brake line and let me know thanks
You might want to head over to the Chinariders Forum (link above) and ask there. I'm sure you'll get a quick answer.
I'm at a loss for words.
"YAY!" works. :D
uh oh .. *instantly rev bomb* super bad for bike cylinder and piston surface ..
they need to be smoothened out slowly over time , low rpms at start , never rev bomb , no moving without warming up engine and much more , refer the manual plz
Newbie mistake. I haven't done it since, honest. :)
I have the same exact one lol
Is it hard to ride if your a short person like 5'6 or 5'7?
I honestly can't answer your question. I'm 5'-11". Maybe someone will see your comment and answer. You could also head over to www.chinariders.net and ask there.
I can believe you can purchase a bike for the price, what's funny is I bet he spent more on the tools then he did the bike. Bought the tools just to work on the bike, lol. Love all the empties on the top of the boxes. Dry video, couldn't make it through
Well I've been acquiring tools for over 25 years, so yeah - I suspect there's more than $2k worth in my collection. :)
how can i get a copy of your check list
At this point, you'd probably have to tell me where I put it, so I can find it. ;) Sorry!
2:07:36 had to charge battery
What are all tools required?
I seem to recall using 8, 10, and 12mm sockets & wrenches. Regardless, it would be a good idea to get a set of both open & closed-end metric wrenches and a set of six point metric sockets in 3/8" drive. You'll also need a wide-bladed flat tip screw driver in order to get the two port covers off the left half of the engine in order to set the valve lash. (and a set of feeler gauges for doing that job.)
would you recommend this for a first bike?
I would. As long as you understand that it's been built to hit a price point, it's a great first bike. I've got around 300 miles on mine so far and it's been a great performer. It's a nice, solid machine, and the price you pay won't make you feel bad if you drop it...like I did last weekend. ;) Good luck!
f15sim Thank you for the response. Yeah, as a kid my brother and I rode motocross so I have experience with both riding and maintenance. However, being 19 and working at a restaurant makes it difficult to afford a fun weekend cruiser. When I heard that you could order a bike from amazon that’s also street legal it sounded like the deal of a lifetime. There’s a RUclipsr who has put over 5000 miles on his 2019 Hawk, the older version, and says with preventative maintenance it’ll last and hold its value. It’ll also be nice to have a vehicle to drive other than my dodge truck. Those things eat so much gasoline. Good luck with learning to ride! It’s an amazing sport!
@@jacksonbillions4921 Since you've got experience working on bikes, you can save a bit of money if you buy the non-EFI version. You'll need to either rejet or replace the carb, but it's like $500 cheaper than the DLX model I have. I did manage to get my motorcycle license endorsement a few weeks ago, so yay me I guess. ;)
Is it worth the extra $500 for the EFI edition?
I think so. The DLX model comes with an inverted fork (which I've been told is a good thing), and you don't have to mess around with re-jetting the carb like you do with the carbureted version of the Hawk. I don't think the "standard" Hawk comes with the digital speedometer, and the DLX does. For me it's 100% worth it not having to do surgery on the carb.
@@f15sim what sort of things you have to do with the carb?
@@TheSlashSlingingSlasher Absolutely nothing. The Hawk in my video is fuel injected. No carb at all. :)
damn i was told to not get one of these but i have not seen one thing I don't like about it or any red flags
As long as you fully understand what you're getting yourself into, these bikes are a great value. As I mention in the video, these things are built to hit a price point and compromises have been made. This thread: www.chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=20331 covers just about everything you need to know in order to have a great experience with one of these Chinese manufactured motorcycles.

It's "relief laughter" after discovering the reason for the no-start was my own damn fault and not something fundamentally wrong with the bike. ;)
What the heck are you doing ? You have no machinal knowledge at all.
I do now! :) (also, I'm not sure if you're after "mechanical" or "machinery"....)
Do you have to adjust the valves right out of the box and does it come with grease
You should check & adjust the clearance before your first ride. If by "grease" you mean "engine oil", it does not. The oil in the engine is there for shipping purposes only and should be drained & replaced with actual motor oil.
@@f15sim no axle grease for the wheels
@@liamdriscoll8486 ah, got it. My apologies. No, it doesn't come with axle grease (or any kind of lubricants at all).
