Nice, I’ll try this repair. My father recently purchased a new chair and he gave his old one, it’s completely sinked it can’t even stand up for it self, I’ll do this temporary repair just for a few months and then save enough money to buy a new one.
Thanks for the vid I'm doing this tomorrow my chair piston finally failed. Im gonna try using some metal washers on the ends and rubber washer on the inside of the pvc to help stabilize it. Hopefully all goes smooth. I like my chair and new one would be very expensive. New cylidner for my chair is $50 and i would have to spend another $50 on tools probably just to have a chance of getting the cylinder out. This seems like a better fix imo. Ironically this fix would probably last longer than a new piston. I
It worked beautifully. No wiggle, no issues rotating or anything. All in all for me it cost $13. I had a small hacksaw already at home. I went to menards and got 2 sizes of pvc pipe, one for supporting the chair and the other slightly smaller one to go inside it to space out 2 rubber washer grommets to help stabilize the outer pvc. Then I used 2 metal washers on each end. All in all from the time I left to the store to the time I was done it took me probably 2 hours. The hardest part imo was getting the perfect height. I had to take it apart and recut once to get closer to the size I wanted. Now it's almost perfect but maybe just slightly too high. I might take it apart again and cut a small piece off. Also want to see if I can somehow cushion it some more and maybe get some bigger washers to help distribute the weight more on the ends of the strut cuz I have a slight concern that the strut end could wear down over time and crack/snap. But otherwise it seems like a permanent fix that will probably outlast the parts on the rest of the chair.
While this is a good fix it is only Temporary. Here is why: Yes this spacer prevents the piston collapsing and your chair stays up. But what happens in real life ( and I know this from first hand experience on 2 chairs, I used an old solid brass tail piece on my chairs) is that ball bearing you showed but did not mention with the washer on re assembly NOW takes the full force of your body's weight and it will be destroyed in a few months. In other words the shock absorber effect of the gas strut is no longer a factor. Yes the chair will still turn on the base AND its casters but guess what? They eventually start to fail too from all this extra work. (the bearing is used to turn the chair normally) I am not trying to be a downer on this fix , yes it works but it is not long term IMHO use this fix to get by but order a new gas strut and fix it latter--- I used my chairs warranty and have gotten 3 gas struts / pistons for free so far.
This video is consider a "Hack" which means you are modifying the item to make it work or make it work better. Your replacement of the gas strut is a "repair" and there are video out there for that. I'm not sure why your "hack" with the brass tail pipe failed, but my chair still works fine after a year and a half. Also, if you had to get 3 gas struts under warranty, may I suggest that you upgrade your chair's brand since those gas struts should not be failing prematurely.
@@fortuitousorder9705 hey HACK --- my brass tail piece DID NOT fail --- the Bearing is what will fail when you disable the "shock absorber effect" (see the quotes here ?) using any type of "spacer" to keep the chair at a certain height. As for the 3 that was over a 4 to 5 yr period. BUT what you also probably dont know is the weight rating on chairs is a bit misleading -- its weight verses time used my chair is used more than 10 hours a day --So yea I bought a good chair rated at 300 lbs for 12 hours and 10 warranty --- Yes I fully expected the gas struts to fail because most gas struts do not last more than a year ---Now You Know the rest of the story.

It's been 3 years and the chair is still fine. You might be able to get away without buying one longer.

My God just buy a new Gas Cylinder, it is not that expensive. It will just cost you 5 to 15 USD plus the shipping delivery cost.
