I like Gen 2, but it's more for the designs of the Pokemon it introduced and the aesthetic of the games. I love those old sprites with their limited color palettes. Sometimes I wish the games still looked like that.

Why do I like Gen 2? Yeah, it is the nostalgia. I grew up with Gen 1 and was just blown away by the improvements. When you compare both, you can just see the leaps in quality while still being able to be played on the original gameboy.
Gen 2 improved vastly on the quality of the sprites and animations. You actually added on to the original story line and were able to visit all of Kanto in the post game.
Mechanically it introduced the dark & steel types, held items, friendship evolutions, specialized pokeballs, day & night cycles and breeding. It also expanded the move pools of many pokemon to be not as miserable as Gen 1.
All in all, Gen 2 did a lot right with the franchise. It's true the generations coming after it fixed, expanded and improved even more, but Gen 2 was the first thing that took the accidental success that was Gen 1 pokemon and elevated it to the next level. Paving the way for (and earning Gamefreak the fans' trust to deliver) many more great generations.
The horrible level progression is a legitimate complaint though. As is the lack of Gen 2 Pokemon availability for both yourself and main boss fights.
So should you still play it now? If you also have a sense of nostalgia for it, yes. If you're new to it, I'd say play the Heart Gold/Soul Silver remakes from Gen 4. You'll get the same story but with the introduction of abilities and the physical/special split along with a plethora of graphical and quality of life improvements. Just like I'd recommend playing Fire Red/Leaf Green instead of the original Gen 1 games.

No that’s super valid. I feel the same way about Black and White which were my second Pokémon games after Pearl. I love Gen 2 and Gen 5 pretty much equally, nostalgia is a part of it, but there is the fact that Johto and Unova just have so much content, a lot of my favorite pokemon, great music and ambience and some of my favorite fights.
As rivals go, Silver and Hugh are perhaps the best written ones too.

I, too, love the Pokemon designs of Gens 2 and 5 the most and am a fan of Hugh (even though it seems like Hugh fans are rare), but I'll admit I don't like the Gen 5 games all that much.
As for Gen 2, while not my favorite because the level progression is indeed bad, the region itself is fun to explore, offering a wide variety of optional areas and unique biomes. Unova feels so empty, I think the story structure of Black and White 1 does a lot to temper all the flat, linear routes in the game.

You actually can get a Leaf Stone before Kanto. Picknicker Gina can give them for you when getting her number. There's a fun little manipulation you can do (similar to what you did for the infinite Return TMs). So, you can get 3 Leaf Stones before Whitney. The same can be done for Fire Stones with that trainer with the Tangela, next to the Sudowoodo.

    Breeding and held items introduced.
    Dark and Steel types introduced.
    Crobat redeeming the zubat line.
Kingdra and Misdreavus adding to Ghost and Dragon types.
    Shinies and Pokérus.
Getting to play in Kanto again, AND fighting Red. I don't know any other gen that has a prior-gen callback like that.
Time of day and day of week changing the content.

I liked Gen 2 before I started replaying the games via emulation to speed things up. That made the Rocket sections more obviously tedious instead of a change of pace.
What I STILL like about Gen 2 are the new mons, much more interesting setting than Kanto, and the presentation. I even like the easy access to Headbutt and elemental punches as a way to improve move diversity in an era where the series is still limited in that regard.

Gen 2 is my favorite because of the graphics style and the music. Gen 2 was such a big step up from Gen 1 and the games ran much smoother, so I always had a positive relationship. I got yellow and crystal at the same time as my first games. Gen 3 was beautiful too, the music was great, but it was a different feeling. Then when gen 4 and gen 5 came out, it felt far too different for me to put them at the top. It literally comes down to the charm/vibe. I was never a gen 5 hater, vanilluxe is fantastic, I just like being in the world in gen 2/3 the most.

Without anachronisms, the addition of new types was pretty cool and new type combinations (Quasire, water/ground, Lanturn, water/electric etc) in Gen II was pretty cool. The gameplay was much better than the previous generation and also the existence of a mythology around the history of the region that the game contains. In Kanto it's pow pow pow earn badges pow pow pow defeat giovanni pow pow pow League pow pow pow take the legendaries, capture mewtwo and that's it.

The easiest games I have right now is Sword and Shield cause the AI is dumb. i do like gen 2, but mostly for aesthetic reasons. crystal versions sprites/animation are the best 2D pokemon EVER looked, imo. the pokemon sprites are just so good in general? the limited palettes the hardware necessitates just gives it such a cool aesthetic.
also the music SLAPS. theres just something about the sound font they used that gen.
johto itself also just feels... Cozy? for some reason? maybe its all the woodlands, maybe the visuals (i love how gen 2 looks, even beyond the pokemons sprites), maybe just nostalgia (gen 1 was my first though). idk. that combined with that music just makes playing the game feel like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a chilly day. its hard to describe.
THAT BEING SAID... yeah. i acknowledge that gameplay wise it sucks lmao. the tms are somehow even worse than in gen 1, only being saved by the elemental punches and return. the movesets are god awful, the pacing turns to shit the second you beat morty, and the plot is easily the worst of any mainline game. "look! its team rocket! ...sorta! anyway, lets slap em on the wrist and watch them crumble instantly." and of course, to add insult to injury, they slam 90% of said plot into one tedious section of the game.
HGSS are majorly overrated too. i replayed every mainline game in chronological order a few years back and. Man. HGSS was a letdown. the added bells and whistles cant save it.
so, in conclusion: gen 2 fucking sucks but im fond of it anyway.

There was a school boy in the route between the bug park and Ecruteak city that will give you leaf stones. Yeah, it's random, but you do have access to all the stones through these people. Each one gives you a specific stone and he gives you leaf stones specifically. It is the boy with the Tangela. All you have to do is add only him and then you will only get calls from him, increasing you chance to get calls from him and leaf stones by connection.

More ways to get actual Gen 2 pokemon pre-Kanto, ways to get the evolution stones, plus certain pokemon from Gen 2 just having their Gen 4 evolutions to help their viability. I always liked gen 5 except the new Pokemon I wasn't a fan of there designs but they grew on me very slowly infact I didn't like them until gen 7 hit (I was 11 when gen 5 came out)

I hated gen 5 back in the day. No joke, I was very dissatisfied with my own life at the time lol. I went away for college, which was a huge mistake in hindsight, and was miserable for all of it before dropping out.
So I played through Pokemon Black, and then I put in 1,300 hours into Soulsilver 🤷‍♂️. I swear my life circumstances and Pokemon Black enjoyment were connected haha

Is it at all possible to do a mix of this format and your prior format for the RUclips upload? Maybe not in terms of all the numbers in detail, but at the very least with your team members and death count and such. Maybe the team over the Gameboy Color logo and the death count on the power indicator. It really helped engage a viewer with your progress at any given moment.

I really like gen 2, but because of the remakes. I mean, they were the first pokémon I've played(original game), but it was so little, that I don't think it changed my opinion. The remakes in other hand, were the peak pokémon form the DS/GBA era, they were so pretty, so fun, so vividy, I love it. BUT THE PACING SUCKS, IT'S HORRIBLE, HORRENDOUS, IT WAS SO BAD THOUGH.

I like gen 2 because of the nostalgia. It's not my favorite, no, that goes to a 3 way tie to Legends Arceus, Scarlet and Violet (yes even despite the bugs), and BW2

  • @swampert564

I like Gen2 but it isn't my favorite by any means (Ruby/Sapphire, Black/White or Black2/White2). Its a messy game and lots of its nonsense really should have been fixed in HGSS (gym leader teams, low levels, pokemon avaliability) but I like it a hell of a lot more than the also messy Gen 1, the extremeley bland FRLG, the actively terrible Diamond/Pearl (though Platinum is really great), the completely forgetable X/Y, the unfinished feeling Sword/Shield.
Janine is weaker then Koga since he's her teacher and master. It's silly from a game design perspective but it makes more sense then you are giving it credit for.

I actually love gen 2. Not as much as Sinnoh or Unova, but I think the thing I love about Johto is that it's simple. The design is really bad level curve and also pokemon placement wise, but the brief stretches of nonlinearity in Johto, followed by the return to Kanto just being a wonderful kind of mess where we get to see the world has evolved and moved on since R/G/B is great. Also the tunes are great and that fight against Red will always be some of the hypest shit in the entirety of Pokemon.
Admittedly though it's way, way too easy but that's more of a "God damnit Game Freak it's okay for your post run one of the Elite Four to be hard." kind of gripe. Which ties in to my general gripe of Game Freak not knowing jack shit about making a challenging post game/kinda post game up until like, Platinum and the gen 5 sequels. Kinda FR/LG as well but not enough in my opinion.
Oh, also in general if there is one thing I like it's the semi-nonlinearity in Pokemon games. It allows you to have some truly interesting adventures in regions. Sure it might make Professor Oak Challenges a pain, but being able to explore and do a decent to large amount of gyms in whatever order you feel like is really cool and only like, Kanto, Johto, and a little bit of Sinnoh really experiment with that.

I like Gen 2, mostly Crystal though! The sprite and music aesthetic really hits a spot for me. When playing the remakes, I cheat in the GB sounds to hear it.
I like the days of the week events and find it really funny they wanted to show it off so bad they made a whole family to give you stuff to show it off 😂
It definitely has faults but by knowing the mechanics, you can usually defeat enemies of a higher level. Beating Red with weird strats is hella fun.
Nice vid! Hope to see more!
