The shell of the coconut is hard and rich in natural oils. It is used in making ladles and cups even today. I would assume it is as durable as hardwood.

How long has that coconut been inside that cup? Has it been there since 1607, and what has kept it preserved?
the husk of a coconut is woody and hard so it's not surprising that it has survived, especially if it was kept dry.
