In this video we are going to review the Advanced Photography Features of the Sekonic SpeedMaster L858D.
We will review Ambient Measuring modes.
Flash measuring modes,
HSS Measuring mode,
And Flash Duration Measuring Modes.
We will also review the basics of using radio triggering and,
Walk you through the most common functions of the tool box | and custom functions.
Ambient Measuring Modes
Let’s start by reviewing the Ambient measuring modes.
T is for Ambient Shutter Priority
F is for Ambient Aperture Priority
TF is for Ambient ISO measurement in which shutter and aperture are locked.
Flash Measuring Modes
Now let’s review the Flash measuring modes
This Flash icon is for cordless flash mode.
When you press the measure button the meter will | wait until it sees a flash go off, | and then provide you with a measurement.
In multi mode it will give you a cumulative reading of multiple flashes.
The Flash c icon is for cord flash measurement mode. | To be used in conjunctions with a flash synchro-cord.
The Flash c multi icon is for cumulative readings| when using a synchro-cord.
The Flash Antenna Icon is for radio flash measurements. | This icon appears when you use the optional radio transmitter.|
The Flash Antena multi icon is for cumulative reading when using a radio transmitter. | Again, this icon appears when you use the optional radio transmitter.
HSS & Flash Duration Measuring Modes
The HSS Icon is for | measuring the flash output when using high speed sync.
Below this you have FDA for Flash Duration Analysis measurement icons.
For uncorded, Corded,
And radio triggering with the optional radio transmitter.
Next let’s explore how to customize the icons shown on the measure mode screen.
Select the Menu Button
Select Custom Settings
Scroll down to page 2
These four setting allow you to control what measuring modes are shown on the measuring mode screen. For instance
Select Ambient Mode
You can deselect these Cine Modes if you plan to only shoot photos. Now you can see only the selected modes from our custom functions screen show up.
Lets review the HSS mode
HSS is used when you shoot with flash above your cameras normal flash sync speed.
Metering these small pulses of light has never been possible prior to the L858
First make sure the meter is in HSS Mode
In most cases you will need your camera to trigger the flash, in order for your strobe to fire in HSS mode.
It is also good to be sure TTL is turned off, as your exposure can change from shot to shot.
Using your camera with your desired shutter speed and ISO set.
Press the measure button on your meter.
Fire your HSS enabled lights from your camera.
And the 858 will give you your HSS measurement
If you are getting the “UNDER” reading, you may need to enter the number of pre flashes your strobe is using.
You can set the number of preflashes by going to the tool box.
Go To Page 02
Select the Number of Pre-Flashes, and close.
If you continue to get under readings, or the metered exposures are inconsistent. Please see the link below to see the list of compatible flashes. Flash duration Analysis mode, allows you to measure the flash duration of strobes.
You can use it in cordless, corded and wireless modes.
You can set your desired T value. Whether it’s T.1 or T.5
By going to the tool box.

Selecting Flash Duration Analysis t Value
Then enter a value between 0.1 and 0.9
And select ok.
Now you can measure flash duration.
Simply tap the screen to also see a graph of the flash.
Tap again to return to the Measuring screen.
The Sekonic 858D is currently compatible with | PocketWizard, | Elinchrom and Phottix receivers.
There are three radio transmitter modules available.
The RT-20PW for Pocketwizard US/Canada frequency (344Mhz), the RT-3PW for PocketWizard European frequency (433Mhz) and the
RT-EL/PX for Elinchrom & Phottix (2.4Ghz).
There is a space under the batteries when you open the back of the meter to insert the transmitter.
Once inserted you will see | the available radio transmitter measuring modes appear on the measuring mode screen.
The power control screen allows you to adjust the power | of compatible strobes.
And by going to tools - Page 2. You can adjust your radio frequency.

Hello, pros also use Godox, especially for HSS.
There are many professional photographers using Profoto and Broncolor flashes like I am，hope to have the Profoto and Broncolor flash triger for the L-858D in the near future.
Leo Pan yes! I always wanted to buy one for my Profoto b1. I hope Sekonic make one which I can change my power settings on the light meter so It would speed up my work flow. I ended up using the TTL and tweak from the trigger instead. Sekonic if you read my comment please consider. Thank you

Exactly. Is ridiculous how narrow minded or blind sekonic is about this! Godox is selling like crazy
Radio triggering is a relatively recent feature, so more brands might be supported in the future. Sekonic started working with PocketWizard protocol because it was a kind of standard-de-facto till a few years ago, then later added Elinchrom & Phottix because all together they constituted a collaboration group called "lighting alliance". So far I have been told, Sekonic asked Profoto to access their radio protocol but the Swedish guys asked to be paid for it... so definitely not a Sekonic fault. ;-)

We want Godox. They are a very strong company and is here to stay. There is lots more Godox out there than any other company that I see.

nice presentation. waiting for godox radio trigger in november :-) can you tell me if we can use HSS from L858D radio transmitter or if we always need to use camera shutter button to make flash ?
You will be able to trigger it directly from the meter.
Can this measure the accurate HSS light output from a godox flash without transmitter?
Or do you need the transmitter to do HSS? I'm thinking it should measure the output
Currently you can measure HSS in coordless mode. We are working on a Godox trasmitter with the hope that you can trigger it from the meter.

Yes, you just need to use it in cordless HSS metering mode, You will not be able to fire the flashes from the meter like you can with Godox.
How about using the filter compensation feature?
Can you meter Godox HSS (ad400 pro) with this light meter? I need to know this before buying.

Nope. I had to put a pocket wizard on it to cue the flash.
Wondering where the compatebility list is, cannot fins them here nor on the website.
Wrt to mun Godox AD600 and Ad400, the HSS measuring complete fails.
Any HSS measured setting it returns, results in a full over exposed image. Those results are worth nothing.
Are those flashes compatible and if so, what nr of pre-flashes do I need to set?.
Will HSS work with my godos flashes if the Godox remore transmitter is available?
In the Netherlands this module is still on pre order. No clue when it will come...
Hey Wilbert, Our first recommendation would be to update the firmware on your meter. Secondly with the new transmitter HSS is now wireless and works extremely accurately. No need to fire the flash from the camera any more.
@@SekonicGlobal Ok thanks. Your hint helped me out. You say, I have to trigger with the XPro with the camera in HSS.
So I gave it immediately a try and it worked! Before I tested all the time with the trigger in my hand, because I do not have such long arms that I can trigger the camera and measure at the same time.
Definitely a reason to buy the remote. Hope it will arrive soon in the Netherlands.

Good evening everyone could tell me if this new model would be exactly the same as Sekonic 758 Cine because I'm looking to buy one I'm afraid to buy and then regret not having the same functions
Hello Danise
The L-858 is a much different meter. It is 3 stops more sensitive in incident mode, and 2 stops more sensitive in spot mode. You can us custom frame rates, and it has every available shutter angle. It can also display illuminance and exposure information on the screen at the same time.
So I won't be able to use wireless trigger because I own godox.... ???¿¿¿
is there any Sekonic's official store for repairing in Viet Nam sir?
my L858D-U cannot press power button and measure button, it turns on when installed batteries, and then about few minutes, it turns off, menu button and screen touch still working

When will a radio transmitter module be available for Profoto? This is what is stopping me from purchasing your newest products. I have an older Sekonic light meter, but refuse to purchase this one until you support Profoto. And believe me, there are many other photographers like me who feel the same way.
We would love to support Profoto. We have asked to collaborate, and do not currently have a path to support them. We will soon offer support for both Godox and Broncolor.

We do not want to pressure them. They are old friends and we respect their wishes. Myself being a Profoto user, I must say it would be nice.
