Kaya Spurgiasz Actually, the first chair player typically plays solos. That’s why there’s a first chair. I’m a middle school and high school chestra director, I play in professional orchestras, and I go to lots of professional orchestra concerts and the concertmaster and principal players of other sections play any solos that come up. As you get more familiar with how orchestras work you’ll see what I mean. It just takes time. 🤓

It's because the soloist was a really good player, but one of our director picked favorites so he couldn't be first chair
