These were amazing!! If ever there was a video to get me investedfully into AFL, this was it. Such a great selection of videos showing why AFL is such an exciting and technical sport. This is a compilation of the best marks just from season 2022 put out by the AFL itself. About half of them would usurp in the ones in this video I reckon. Also will give you a up-to-date feel for the game and players. Also you can see that it’s a pretty frequent occurrence in the game. Love your enthusiasm!

One of my relatives is called "The Birdman". We asked him ,after getting mark of the year if that was his best.
"No" he said : "I've done better"
He could mark a ball at 14' above ground. They train for it by jumping on huge pads hald by training staff and concentrate on marking the ball. Yes, you must mark it, untouched , and hold it till they hit the ground. They start this, like your footballers, practising skills since children and are very lean, strong muscular guys. Most are nice guys who have girls, wives and kids and are not snobby.
We took a German friend to a game and she was amazed that fans were not segregated. You've just got to be a good sport, win or lose.Glad you enjoy it.

Nice reaction, Mat. The number two mark was clearly the best, and no one disputes that. (Gary Moorcroft played for my team, the BOMBERS, and he is very short, so that was clearly numero uno.) The number 4 mark, by Andrew Walker, was taken over-top of Jake Carlise, who also played for my team, the BOMBERS. Jake is 6'7" in your measurements, so to jump cleanly onto his shoulders was awesome. And Walker had a head injury! And he kicked a goal. That sucked. These guys are proper athletes. To answer your question, "do they practice landing?" Well, it's pretty hard to land on your head like a sack of potatoes, but clearly, practice makes perfect! 🤣So, no, but they are tough and often pretend they're not hurt when in all reality they need an ambulance. Keep up the great work. GO BOMBERS! (Notice the subtle nudge to pick a great team. BOMBERS, BOMBERS.) And Dr. KAP, back off!

Look I’m sure 10 others would’ve explained it to you but I can’t be bothered reading other comments so I’ll tell you just in case. It is considered a mark if you control the ball, that in most cases means stopping it dead, even if it then spills out. The two teams jumpers your were commenting upon, Adelaide and Western Bulldogs, couldn't represent two more different communities. That aside, you'd have to go for the dogs (blue, white and red), they represent a working class multi-ethnic community, with their base in the inner west of Melbourne. They also do a lot of work in the community, running a free community health program similar to that run by Liverpool FC. I'm not a Bulldogs supporter, but I've much respect for the work they do in the community and they're a much loved club, even by opposition supporters, as it's not uncommon to have a second team, mainly as say your team might not be having a great season, you can then live vicariously through your number two team, especially when it comes to finals and your team doesn't make it. That said, you don't change teams, ever. You might have a different number two, but there's only ever one number one. Go Tigers!

    In answer to your questions:
    I would have Gary Moorecroft's (#2) mark as #1.
Yes, kids practice taking a "speck" (spectacular mark) from an early age. A common playground activity at lunchtime is "kick to kick", where you have two packs of kids separated by the length of a kick and they take turns kicking and marking the ball between the two groups. If you land awkwardly, you can get the wind knocked out of you.
To be judged a mark, the umpire has to decide that you have "controlled" the ball. If it jostles out when you hit the ground, that us ok, as long as it was controlled before that. There is no rule about how many seconds you have to hold it or anything like that. By the way, I don't think Garry Ablett's mark (#3) should have been paid. Greta effort, but not controlled in my opinion.
When it is close to the goal line, the player has to complete the mark without the ball completely crossing the goal line. If they fumble it and control it after it crosses the line, that is a behind (1 point).
Yes, there are certain players that have a knack for speckies and Jeremy Howe was one of them.

Best mark imo is Nick Riewoldt, number 6 in the list, for the speed and courage running with the flight into who-knows-what, eye only on the ball, kept control at all times, twist mid air and crashing into the guy helps the case too. All good marks (agree with below that Ablett mark was not a mark), but some pretty average. Number one on the list I’ve never understood. This video is pretty old. We had a lot of great marks last season, more than the average amount each year, and from memory the year before. The guy who keeps popping up is Jeremy Howe, plays for the Pies now. The other guy featuring a lot, the Crows player (the red, yellow, blue strip), is Tony Modra, aka Godra. Legend. Type of player you enjoy watching whoever you barrack for. Moorcroft mark pretty damn good. The short guy at the end.

    • @off1k

Riewoldt's mark is fantastic, one of my favourites.
The number 1 mark was judged 'Mark of the Century' (last Century) by an expert panel and is one of the best ever imo. He's up so high, a 6 footer climbing on a 6'4" team mate (Lyon) with almost straight legs, with his feet on the shoulder blades of Lyon, probably over 50" vertical, there's only been a handful of marks that I can remember that have been just as high, Sampi's (No.7) is close but he had some help from Russel Robertson to get there.

    • @cajoz
      @cajoz Год назад

@@off1k Yeah, I know Smith’s mark was judged mark of the century, but I wouldn’t call it as spectacular as most of the marks. on this list. I’d judge it, highest vertical then I guess. Not sure it is though. It’s like Shai Boston’s mark a couple seasons back. Got up very high, but wasn’t as spectacular because he landed on his feet (which is good for him getting up that high). If we were going best mark, we might technically go for a leading forward arms out in front, clunk it cleanly Carey-style. Mark of the Century should see some horizontal air or stepladder action, no thought but for getting the pill, and should look like painful. Gotta earn it. Those are my criteria, but to each his own!

Also, most of these 'marks' would not count these days because you aren't allowed to put your hands on an opponents back whilst going for the mark. But because marks like these are so spectacular the umpires allow a little room.

When you start watching games, you'll be amazed at the skill and speed of the game, and not just speed of foot, but speed of thought. You've got so little time to dispose of the ball that if you wait a split second too long, you're fucked.

What you also have to remember is the continual pressure and pace of the game...it doesn't slow down till the final siren... they are no doubt the fittest athletes that play sport. Some midfielders can travel a half marathon jogging sprinting tackling chasing being chased.... you should watch a whole game preferably a finals game not necessarily a grand final....at the MCG Cheers

The rule is that you have to have control of the ball before you loose it due to landing. That number 3 was controversial at the time. Ablett was well know for his great marking ability and sometimes because of this he was awarded marks that others would not have. If you look at it in slow you can see the ball hitting his arm but he did not have control. Also you have a ground length of 160mtrs from goal to goal and back then only 2 umpires. Making it hard for an umpire to keep up with the play that can move that distance in 5-10 seconds when moving quickly.

Where you were talking about the player being emasculated, Brad Ottens (marker) was 6'7 & the fellow he sat on top of, Kurt Tippet was 6'8. The fellow you said was about 6'5 is also 6'7, that's Joey Daniher. The black guy with the dreadlocks is Nic Natanui, another 6'7 dude & he appears twice.

Glad this put the fire in your belly for our great game. These screamers are a big part of the excitement for the fans. You may not have one in every game, but there is maybe one per round of this type of quality so when they occur the crowd goes mental.
I respect Gary Moorecroft at #2 as a Carlton supporter. I actually think it should have been #1, and there are plenty of people in the AFL community who think the same because it is all 'in the grab' and it was virtually perfection in how it stuck to his fingers. What was given as #1 was a bit lacklusture in comparison but still worth a top 10 position due to the height. For the record, Abblett's at #3 was a definite non-mark, never controlled the ball at any time. #4 of course is a favourite of mine due to the effortlessness of it.

when a mark is taken and then when they hit the ground lose it, it depends how long they have held onto the ball before losing it and you must have not let it go before you land on the ground yourself. The team with the colourful striped shirts is the Adelaide Crows, my favourite team, were at their best in the days of Anthony Modra and co back in the 80's.

one of the important things to know is if these guys go up for the mark on the opponents and push backs shoulders etc and don't actually mark the ball a free kick can be awarded against them. So that adds more pressure on them to get it right

Mark is when the umpire said you had control of the ball so it can be punch out or hit the ground but if you had control of the ball it's a mark called by the umpires

You’re supposed to hang on to it,but sometimes the impact can make the ball come out of your grip then it’s up to the umpire to determine if it’s a mark or not you’ll see that in some of these marks.Alberts mark against Collingwood is a prime example ( for me it wasn’t a mark)

    • @L3onOfKings
      @L3onOfKings Год назад +2

Albert??? Ablett... Yeah it was a mark, he grabbed it with his left hand and it switched to his right arm where it was nestled against his body, THEN he hit the ground where it bounced out. That is a mark, he had control of it before he hit the ground.
I'm an Essendon fan btw, I'm not a one-eyed Geelong supporter.

Footy was a "blue collar" sport, so back in the 80's the players were labourers on constructions sites, miners, trench diggers etc. Their job chiseled their body to what you see in the video. Back then there wasn't enough money in the sport to pay the players enough every week that they didn't need to work a normal job, and employers would let them have time off as required for games in other cities and training in the evenings, because guys were playing for the local team who everyone cheered for.
They also use to drink beer at half time, diets didn't exist back then, training was running while dragging a tire behind them on the beach etc.

  • @athlonen

From what I was taught by Rowan Sawers (first umpire to officiate in over 400 games), a Mark is taken when 1) the ball has been kicked off the foot (foot being below the knee) and has traveled a distance more than 15 meters, 2) has been caught and not touched by another player, and 3) held onto for a reasonable amount of time (that time to be determined by the umpire).
#3 has always been controversial, because the umpire paid the mark to the player, but there was no reasonable amount of time that Ablett held onto the ball.

You only have to have a good solid grab for a few seconds in a contest
It's up to umpires interpretation of the rule if it's a mark
But if it's uncontested and you drop the ball umpire will, call play on want award a mark
For landing it depends on how you come off the person your jumping up or over is how the landing happens
So you don't really know how you'll land until your jumped and coming down
But most times you'll see they turn their body's and land on shoulder or get arm out to cushion the fall
The one that hurt are when landing on your back knocks the wind out of you takes a few min to get breath back it's like you can't breath
Mainly torn muscles and joints are common injuries like shoulder joints knees and ankle joint hamstrings are common or a corky
Which is a big hit to a muscle and its bleeding underneath looks like massive bruise they ice to,stop swelling and bleeding
But if not to bad they keep you running or it'll get sore and sieze up very painful takes a week or two to get over it depending on how bad
Their are broken bones but not that common a few snapped legs flopping around collar bones ribs you'll notice some playing have strapping on that to stop joint from com out and strengthen shoulders knees ankles are common after operations as most are subject to popping out so taping helps to strengthen joints but does restricts movement why players wont tape before injury
If you see a clean bandge normal happened in game like the guy who takes Mark his heads bandged that would've happen in game
But pretty rare only one person from memory ever been paralysis
I'm not sure about deaths none in main game that I know of
In miner league has been some a young lad dropped dead on field while playing but it wasn't from a injury a couple of years ago
Also someone was struck by lightning so games now stop if lightning happens we used to just continue to play
I think the person died from lightning in a minor league not even sure if footy or another sport
But all sport maditary stops if lightning happens
Cheers mate love your passion 🇦🇺👍
There's never a stupid question it's the only way you'll know is by asking and most Aussie will help
The team clours you like is one of my home teams Adelaide crows and we have port power
The city is Adelaide there's always damage when playing against each other
Crows are the richer team and more supporters where power is working class and less followers but as noisy if not louder then most
Players don't care it's part of game jumping on your back it's expected

    It's all about control.
Garry Abletts mark was controlled which was not shown on the camera. Him landing awkwardly made the ball drop out.
No. 2 should have been number 1.
Shaun Smith at #1, he was always in the air. Some people just have the ability to launch and keep going up. Some of these would be 9ft (3m) high at the highest point.

They just have to catch and hold for a few seconds to count as a mark. Look at how grumpy the player jumped on looks. Kids don’t do that early but they are trained towards it.
Watch the song played before every Grand Final. It was written about Roy Cazaly, one of our greats and before my time. He was amazing and there are some great marks in it.

Once an umpire has deemed a player has taken control of the ball during a mark then it's paid a mark. Prior to 1990 players were semi professional training Tuesday and Thursday then playing on Saturday and the grounds were not maintained well back then so at times it could feel like landing on concrete but now they are fully professional train 5 day's a week have club Doctors there and the grounds are kept in perfect condition M.C.G and Marvel Stadium in Melbourne two grounds in New South Wales three in Queensland and another two in Adelaide, Western Australia and Tasmania and one in the Northern Territory game started in 1858 there are just a few facts about the game

A mark in Australian rules football is the catch of a kicked ball which earns the catching player a free kick. The catch must be cleanly taken, or deemed by the umpire to have involved control of the ball for sufficient time. - Wikipedia

If a player controls the ball through the air after catching it is considered a mark as the referees understand a hard fall will pop the ball out of someones hand regardless of the players strength and grip, The "unnoficial" reason is because the fans would riot and the referee would probably be out of a job if they didn't award this kind of exceptional play 😜
Also, if you recklessly go for a screamer like this and miss the ball they give a free kick to the defender because you "pushed him out of the play". (basically a push in the back foul)
