What an awesome video. Fantastic. It put me in mind of Robert McFarlane's Old Ways. Our ancient ancestors traversing the land by foot, creating layers of collective memory. You brought an extra dimension to running RUclips with that.
Thanks! I'm hoping to do some more running like this where it's kind of adventuring and exploring and connecting up places of significance. Really enjoyed the process, well most of it 😅
Brilliant video. I used to visit Greenwich Park alot as a kid. Obviously knew about the meridian but not the trail. The meridian also passes through Denia on the Costa Blanca in Spain.
Thanks Chas. It was pretty cool to go back to Greenwich and have a look around though a lot of it was only vaguely familiar as we moved out when I was 4. The trail has only opened up in the past decade I think. Next challenge to connect Greenwich and Denia!
Really great video - a proper adventure. It's like running without a safety net - closed pubs, unhelpful farmers, uncertain routing through rough terrain, closed and diverted footpaths - every problem encountered calmly considered and solved. Amazing effort and a great watch.
Thanks so much Richard. That's partly why I wanted to do this, I've done of lot of races where the support has been amazing so I wanted to see what it would be like without all this. Fair to day it's a bit more chaotic but does make it interesting! Thanks for watching
I love a long run adventure! No pressure on time, just exploring and covering distance and terrain that very few do. Looks like you had a great day out. I can relate to feeling nauseous, that always happens but glad you managed to find a good few shops for top ups! Huge achievement. Enjoyed that Ben. I hope the farmer gets to watch this!
Thanks Francois. It was great to get out and do something like this and explore a bit. Hoping to do more adventure runs. I'm usually not too bad with sickness but that might be why I pushed the stomach in this one and thought I could wolf down loads of snacks in 5 mins 😅 Lesson learned for next time!
Yes Ben! Legend! What an incredible day out! Huge kudos to you mate. Thank you for that mention mate I really appreciate that. This video has inspired me to try and organise another adventure. Loved the background story behind the run mate. Very pountient. I think the L2B sign is part of the old Sussex Trail Events London to Brighton race route. Well done once again mate you are a hero! 😎🤘
Cheers Ben! Like I said in the video you're part of the reason I thought about just going out and running this so you're to blame, I mean thank 😅 That makes sense with the L2B race, Michael was saying he did that when it was still going. I wonder how similar the route I did was to that. Like your L2B it was more roads than I would have liked but around East Grinstead with the forest trails was lovely. Thanks for watching mate!
Wooowwww!!!😮🤯🤯 Now THAT is the definition of a true running adventure!!! CHAPEAUX Ben!!!👏🏻👏🏻 I’m just heading out now to continue my own running adventure, doing the entire GR1 hiking trail around the Île-de-France region surrounding Paris … but not all in ONE DAY!!!! Wow Ben !!! Yours and Carla’s examples continually inspire me to bigger and greater things!! Huge BRAVO!!!! 👏🏻💪🏻🏃🏻♂️💪🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much Bev, really enjoyed mixing it up and doing a different kind of running challenge. Your GR1 adventure sounds great, have a good one out there and hope you get some good weather for it!
Wow...that is impressive! I found it tough enough to do the London to Brighton cycle ride with all the support of a big event...but doing it on footi!? And alone!?? Wow...
Thanks Joe! Great feeling of adventure doing this one. I think this whole adventuring thing might be a theme in the family with all of us going off on our various escapades 😅
Great journey, Ben! From Greenwich Park to Brighton, you've covered diverse terrain and faced some challenges. The ups and downs of an ultramarathon truly make it a "life in a day" experience. It's a reminder that life itself is an ultramarathon, full of highs and lows. Well done on this remarkable achievement!
Thanks Mihai! It was great to get out there and do a different kind of adventure and connect two places of significance for me. There's certainly ups and downs but then that's part of why we like it :) Thanks for watching
Epic adventure. Did not know about that Meridian trail - great idea. Was not far away at Woolwich for four years studying at Thames Polytechnic, not poshly renamed Greenwich University. Think you deserve at least an ice cream after that. Best wishes.
Fantastic Video Ben!! Very well produced I must say. Captured every moment and every feeling very well. You could see at the end how much that run meant to you, when you hit Brighton. So many kind people helping you along the way when there was no pub etc. Really restores your faith in humanity. Great video mate and very inspiring.
Cheers Stephen! People were really good along the route and helped salvage the run at a couple of moments especially with the water side of things. Was great to be able to connect up the two places and yes very relieved to get to Brighton at the end 😀 Thanks for watching mate 🙏
I really enjoyed the entirety of this adventure while I was lifting weights! Great insights for a novice ultra guy like me! I love the idea of going long just for your own satisfaction! Keep pushing, Ben!
Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed it. It was good to give something different ago, not doing a race but just doing some adventure running. Hoping to do something similar again! Hope your training is going well, thanks for watching mate
Just watching this again this morning, SOOO inspirational!!!! I got a little teary there at the end!! I'm gonna try my own big day out running adventure this coming summer, 60-70km, just gotta find a route that really inspires me, without toooo much elevation gain!!🤣🤣
Thanks so much Bev, glad you enjoyed the re-watch! Great to hear you're planning an adventure run, it's a really good thing to do, great sense of freedom 😃

Running for adventure! totally love this Ben, what a great idea. As you mention, running can be so many things other than racing. Thanks for sharing this adventure with us! :)
Thanks Phil. It's a great way to get out of your comfort zone and just explore for the love of it. Hoping to do more of this and go further afield maybe something like what you did along the St Cuthbert's Way, great idea 👍
Your film making is superb, one of the best running adventures i have seen on youtube, just loved the simplicity of it all , literally running in its purest form, bravo,
Fabulous Ben. Nourishment for my early stage ultra career. Beautifully paced (the vid!) and narrated. So nice to see local sites at the end as a fellow new/adopted brightonian Paul/wish/Phx 😊
Amazing video, really nicely edited, it really felt like we were out there with you! I imagine you have quite some time for introspection on such a long run. Congrats on not only the physical challenge that it was but also the mental toughness to do this on your own!
Thanks Chloe! Yes definitely a lot of thinking time on these long runs and time to get headspace which is part of why I really like them even if not every moment is pure enjoyment 😅
Cheers Mark! Had been wanting to do this kind of advaneture run for a while so was great to finally get out and do it. When I'm training for races and tend to do the same routes again and again but this reminded me how good it is just to get out exploring. Thanks for watching 😀
Superb content- love the reflections and the tribulations of the ultra distance run - so true! The L2B signs are a relic from a race I did in 2009 organised by a company called Extreme running. Blackheath to Brighton via places like Lingfield, Forest Row, Chailey - 56 miles 👊👍 Loved it Ben thanks 🙏
Thanks so much Michael. Enjoyed making this one. I thought those L2B signs might have been from a previous race. Around Chailey was lovely, I remember running through there and went camping there before. Was there much road and tarmac in the old L2B?
A good bit maybe 25% Road . Before gpx watches so they gave a detailed map book . I got lost in the Ashdown Forest 😅 did a bonus mile ! Someone did a rehashed version of the same event a few years before Covid but seems to have stopped too.
@@michaelbennett6778 That sounds a similar amount of road to the GMT. I almost got lost in Ashdown Forest WITH a GPX file so can imagine how it's easily done without 😅 Thanks for watching Michael and congrats again on the Autumn 100 recently
As always Ben, an amazing self supported run and brilliant video, well done. You mentioned that fine line between having your laces tight, or slackened off and your shoes a tad loose . I suffered with extensor tendonitis due to lacing my shoes too tightly, so I think a fair compromise is what you're after. Until I had it, I never knew you could get tendonitis on the top of your foot. Always a lesson learnt!
Thanks Steve. It's a really awkward one with the laces, I can still feel it a bit on the top of my left foot so will look to see if I can get a pad or something to sit underneath the laces. Not something I knew about before either but it's a tricky one! Thanks for watching
Great video Ben. Love the idea of an Adventure Run no pressure on time etc. Out of interest what shoes did you wear for this run and how did you find them over this distance?
Thanks Daniel. I wore the North Face Vectiv Enduris 2. I've really been liking them this year and find them very comfy. No blisters, hot spots and a decent amount of cushioning. Wide enough for my wide feet too 👍
Due to erratic work scheduling and family commitments I don’t get to participate in as many Ultra events as I would like and could manage . So I end up doing a lot of ultra distances outside of the event paradigm . My wife is a runner but she is happy to accompany me and ride a bike so there’s the facility to carry what we need to spend the night in a hotel and catch the train home the following day . I do really enjoy racing environment and I am a relatively competitive person by nature but it seems like a squander of opportunity to not challenge oneself with ultra distances when you are in good form just because there is no races convenient enough to attend and it takes a different type of discipline and mind set to attempt to run at race pace when you are the only one running .
I really like that DIY approach to doing ultra distances and can completely relate to how it can be harder without the buzz of the race and aid stations after doing this. That sense of adventure you get from just going out there and doing it is amazing. I still like races but I'm hoping to do more like this in the future for sure. Are there any trails in particular you've tended to do your ultras on?
@@timeonfeet I'm from Wanborough outside Guildford ( GTR ) and is ten minutes off the NDW so for convience I have tended to use trails which I can go straight out the door and run to join and get back by train . I have done the Downs link to Brighton and viseversa . The Omen section of the NDW . Ran to farnham and joined the Shiprights way to Portsmouth and on another occasion ran it as far as the SDW and followed that .The last run I did was to follow the local canal to the river Wey and on to the Thames ending up at the Southbank under the Eye and I regularly run The Fox ultra route on my own as it literally passes my house and is an easy 40 mile circle . Theres no exacting science but for instance I race the Fox route in under five hours but on my own without other runners I take six hours . The real challenge would be the ability to run a route full tilt alone and try to match previous race times but for now I just enjoy the Time on feet and the views . Best of luck mate , I really enjoy your videos .
@@guzgrant that's a great way to do it and shows you don't always have to just do ultras as part of a race. It's good you've got lots of routes near you to do this on.
