Excellent video. I enjoyed hearing about HOW various aspects of the game came to be. Part of what made Portal so enjoyable was the antagonistic dialogue. Then part of what made Portal 2 so awesome was that it was in the future AND the past. It felt like three games in one. This improved on Portal's only flaw (short). It also made pretty good use of all the new facets it incorporated. Can't wait for Portal 3 *crosses fingers*.
jesse jibran Technically the comic "Lab Rat" tells the story of Ratman and connects Portal and Portal 2 together. Hence if it were telling the story of Ratman it would be a 1.5 or 1 1/2. This would only be true, though, if it told the same/similar story of the timeline in "Lab Rat".

I think the aspects of the game that added motion sickness and difficulty should have been left in the game, but placed in a separate campaign or gamemode. However, if they did that, we probably would still be waiting for Portal 2.
The gel that allowed you to defy gravity was still in the code at the time of release and was changed into a gel with the ability to reflect lasers during the Perpetual Testing Initiative update. This "Reflection Gel" was also not included.
By the way, you CAN fire a portal through a portal in portal 1 by getting the tip of your portal gun through the portal while your body is still on the other side. The aiming reticle will change to the one that appears when you aim at a valid surface (as long as it's valid) and you can launch a portal. You have to make sure you launch the right color (the color opposite of the one you're currently walking through) and quickly step back (least you fall into something you don't want to).
You can find a video somewhere on RUclips where some guy plays it backwards and fixes some of the distortions. Kinda creepy, but it's worth a look if you want to find out more about what happened to the Borealis ;)
There is a chance that F-Stop could've been either a Matrix-Style where the objects around you go slowly, or that everything freezes around you. One of two things would've been cool!

Hmmm, then maybe it would be used to control the diameter of the portals? Making it easier to move objects through them, though that didn't seem to be an issue in either game. I'm not sure what use controlling the amount of light going through a portal would be in the game, unless the portals are generated by photons in the lore, at which point F-stop might be the ability to shoot portals through already existing portals. They wanted to surprise gamers with Portal 2 by having it exclusively use brand new mechanics, which means portals and everything else used in the first game would have been scrapped. Playtesters were rightfully disappointed at the lack of portals in the sequel and they decided to put those gameplay ideas aside, potentially for a new franchise in the future.
As much as I wish there would be a Portal 3, there isn't going to be one. The Portal series is finished. Chell is now free! The only loose ends I can think up of is... 1. What happens to Chell next now that she's stuck in a wheat field in the middle of nowhere? 2. Why does she have the companion cube with her? 3. What happens to Wheatley and the Space core up in outer space? Besides now that Chell is free there can't be a Portal 3, there would be no story! It would be cool if they turned the Portal series into a movie though. That would be awsome! They could have Cave Johnson, Caroline, and Doug Rattman in the beginging and everything!

What if there was a series of test chambers where the emancipation grill vaporizes the portal gun and you use F-Stop throughout those test chambers. And when you got through the chambers you would get a new portal gun. Who likes it?

yeah, matt said that portal 2 was meant to be a prequel right? So why don't they just make the prequel? I started wondering lately, what is the cake? I mean it could possibly be the cake that GLaDOS talks about, but what if its is something else? when rattman writes the cake is a lie the third time it almost seems like his is running away from "the cake" because of the way the "e" is extended with a squiggily line. Rattman has taken those drugs so he could possibly be halusinating that there is such thing/person as "the cake". Or maybe i am looking too deep into this theory and it is as simple as the cake is the cake GLaDOS talks about.
Yeah, people analyse things far too much in gaming and they end up trying to prove the existence of a god or something equally impossible. Rattman was a scientist in the Aperture Labs who had a breakdown, he knew the "cake" was a metaphor and a bribe so he tried to warm Chell... That's about it.
I'm dissapointed of toy MatPat... Have you forgotten TAG? It's a short indie game that gave you the option to shoot paint that allowed you to run fast, jump and walk on walls. valve actually hired the guys who developed the game to integrate the paint mechanich into Portal. Kind of symbolic since Portal, as stated was created by indie developers which were hired by valve...
I'll never understand the love of Portal 2. It was so ridiculously easy that I could barely finish it. Instead of letting me solve puzzles, they would just put white squares on the walls so I knew EXACTLY where I needed to put portals to succeed. There was no thought involved.

F-Stop is a camera term. It's the unit of measurement to determine the amount of aperture (Light entering camera) when taking a picture. This game is riddled with tons of terms that originate from cameras.
The gravity-defying gel I think would've been a terrific idea, as well as a possible add-on set in the old days of Aperture to explore more deeply into Cave Johnson's time.

DYKG is in no way connected to TheGameTheorists. They're not even in the same network! Mat and his channel aren't even listed as affiliates or friends on the DYKG website! The only connection Mat has to DYKG is the few episodes he's narrated, and THAT'S IT. If you're talking about DidYouKnowMovies, that's a separate series and is unaffiliated with VGFacts and DYKG. As far as I can tell, Mat actually stole the fucking name, since DYKG wanted to use it for their own series but still hasn't.

What if there was a series of test chambers where the emancipation grill vaporizes the portal gun and you use F-Stop throughout those test chambers. Now I know that we have Microsoft, Valve, Amazon, DigiPen, 343 Industries, Bungie, Sucker Punch, PopCap, Nintendo of America, Snowblind, WB Games , Wild Tangent and A LOT more gaming companies. We also have the Seahawks and their Super Bowl win along, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Some natural disasters too like Mount St. Helens, the '01 earthquake and the mudslide. We're a lot more famous than I thought!

yeah, matt said that portal 2 was meant to be a prequel right? So why don't they just make the prequel? Mel could be chell's mother or something, ratman could be the father and maybe while you are playing GLaDOS could hint towards chell existing as a baby or something...there may be some holes in that theory but it would still be pretty cool.

I started wondering lately, what is the cake? I mean it could possibly be the cake that GLaDOS talks about, but what if its is something else? when rattman writes the cake is a lie the third time it almost seems like his is running away from "the cake" because of the way the "e" is extended with a squiggily line. Rattman has taken those drugs so he could possibly be halusinating that there is such thing/person as "the cake". Or maybe i am looking too deep into this theory and it is as simple as the cake is the cake GLaDOS talks about.
The "cake" is motivation to get Chell to finish the tests and be led to her death.

Rattman was a scientist in the Aperture Labs who had a breakdown, he knew the "cake" was a metaphor and a bribe so he tried to warm Chell... That's about it.

I'm dissapointed of toy MatPat... Have you forgotten TAG? It's a short indie game that gave you the option to shoot paint that allowed you to run fast, jump and walk on walls. valve actually hired the guys who developed the game to integrate the paint mechanich into Portal. Kind of symbolic since Portal, as stated was created by indie developers which were hired by valve...
I'll never understand the love of Portal 2. It was so ridiculously easy that I could barely finish it.
Instead of letting me solve puzzles, they would just put white squares on the walls so I knew EXACTLY where I needed to put portals to succeed. There was no thought involved.

F-Stop is a camera term. It's the unit of measurement to determine the amount of aperture (Light entering camera) when taking a picture. This game is riddled with tons of terms that originate from cameras.

On the orange box game select screen where you can pick between half life 2, portal and TF2, if you scroll over to portal and wait, it will show a demo video with the same weird art style that doesn't look like the regular gameplay. I think it's just some trailer that was not made in-game, and maybe before the game was finished.
