Some therapists get caught in the Mckenzie theory of exercise and think lumbar extension is the answer for all back problems. It gets almost cult like. As a PT I evaluated a patient that had spinal stenosis and told the PT assistant that was a McKenzie fanatic, not to do extension exercises with this patient. Sure enough sometime later I see him instructing the patient in a prone press up.🤷♂️
I have spine stenosis and it’s so painful! Had a lumbar fusion L4,5, so I lost mobility on some areas, can not be on my belly at all, I’m just 59 years young and iv been with this problem since I was 20 y.o. Thank you ❤
Dear bob and Brad, thank you for all the help you’ve given over the years. I am hearing a lot about rebounders at the moment and I’m wondering what your thoughts are on them. Are they any good?
There are some exercises that may help. Here is a link to all our videos we have done on this that you can check out for those exercises: www.youtube.com/@BobandBrad/search?query=spinal%20stenosis
I came across your video and it is my pain yo a T and the exercises and solutions are what helps, however, after severe pain following a lap surgery, I went back to a neurologist who said i had nothing bad enough wrong with me to cause pain and he echoed that last week when i saw him. I am wondering if I should get an updated MRI. Walking irritates my back so much and running did this fall when I tried to do it again. I bike and swim--even long swimming sets lock up my back. Or maybe I need a different doctor?! I am in my early 40s and a very accomplished amateur cyclist. Thanks for your video!!!!
Thank you guys love great information for me .l been a dairy farmer on family farm being a small young girl i badly damaged my back I was shown that exercise no was not good for my back. Thanks
I have the opposite direction (Flexion) effect. It is very difficult to stand straight or extend after I bend forward. What is might be the problem there and how do I fix it? It’s been a year now and I’m only 41yrs old.
We wouldn't want to guess without properly being able to examine you so we would have to suggest you see your physician to get a proper diagnosis and then we would be able to point you in the right direction.
I can't stand up unless I lean back and squeeze my abdominal muscles . I had stenosis surgery in 2020 and have been fused in a forward bend and have severe nerve and instability as well . Still can't walk unassisted. The pelvic worked to relieve some pressure in my upper lumbar meeting the mid back until I developed severe sciatica and spasms in my lower abdominal area . Right now no therapy and planning a revision soon I pray .? 😢
I just found your RUclips since I’m looking for ways to straighten out my arm. I had a terrible triad, elbow injury and I had surgery and now I’m out of my Cast and they want me to straighten my arm, but it’s painful and I’m sure my arm is stiff Do you guys have any suggestions for me?
Thank you for such an informative video! I often get confused with my stenosis and herniated L4/L5/S1. Everything I read and watch says to do extension for herniations but with stenosis you need more flexion. What would you advise I do? Thank you!
I do have the 4 wheeled walker now and I walked all. Over Niagara Falls Park and still cannot walk alone unassisted toy kitchen . It's very irritating because there is no fix now

Backbends on your stomach have been promoted by you for years. It has always been clear that most people are harming themselves by doing this exercise.
It's really good exercise for some issues, it's only a problem if you have issues like lumbar stenosis. It's no different from that you treat some cancers with chemo therapy, while you absolutely do not treat e.g. ME/CFS with chemotherapy (nor do you treat the common cold with chemotherapy).
Hi guys! I have both spinal stenosis and herniated discs in my lumbar spine. I know flexion is bad for disc issues and extension is bad for stenosis….would love if you made a video addressing how to workout when dealing with both. Thanks😊 Hi Bob! Miss ya♥️

What is the recommendation for people with a herniated disc and also narrowing of the lumbar canal.?

What if we have *both* stenosis and bulging discs (since those "press ups" are widely recommended to treat bulging discs)?
This is my question too because I have a bulging disc along with spinal stenosis...😢
Thank you guys love great information for me .l been a dairy farmer on family farm being a small young girl i badly damaged my back I was shown that exercise no was not good for my back.

What kind of exercise can I do if I have issues with my lower back facet joints at L3, L4, and L5?

Very sorry to hear this
What exercise is for me if I have both compressed nerve from disc, and stenosis!
Flexion feels better for my lumbar stenosis and spondylolisthesis, but my understanding is that isn’t good for osteoporosis, which I also have.
It does get difficult when you’re juggling several different conditions

Very sorry to hear that but at least you can still walk, if it has to be with a walker, that's ok!
Try Qigong by erle montaigue

isnt this the same exercise for relieving back pain?
Can you recommend a couple exercises to strengthen the back instead of the superman type exercises.

Am I going to give myself stenosis by doing these exercises (I have bulging discs)? They are very typical yoga exercises I do every day….
No, you shouldn't give it to yourself!
Don't do back extensions if it creates pain. It will end up giving you facet issues just like they did to me.
Where is Bob though?

Hello Doctor, I hope you will put a translation into Arabic in the video
We try to do as many translations as we can but it's not possible to do every one unfortunately.

You mean they haven't known everything, forever, and should never change their opinions??? OH, MY! 😂😂😂
For Stenosis this is not recommended.
Thank you for your understanding that things change and studies change and that is why we do duplicate videos with the most updated information!
