"Cool Hand Luke" was based on a 1932 film I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang, starring Paul Muni. And that film was based on a book I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang! by Robert Elliott Burns. Burns did time on and escaped a Georgia chain gang. His book was to tell the world how brutal the chain gangs are.

      Thank you very much.
I have done quite a bit of research for this series, but I had not read of this film in any of it!
A quick look at IMDb reveals that the buzz surrounding I Am A Fugitive actually achieved a pardon for Burns, who was also still on the run at the time of its release!
I am going to get a copy of the DVD and the book and look forward to devouring each.
      Much obliged to you sir.

Except in that book, chain gangs were much worse. In this they don’t have chains unless they tried to escape, they eat decent, guards are tough, but fair (mostly), they get leisure time to play cards, have actual toilets and showers, and if you faint, they put you in the truck, not whip you for it. Chain gangs were reformed after that movie came out.
And it wasn’t based on that movie, it was based on Donn Pearce’s time served on a central Florida chain gang in the 1950’s.

Men and times were tough in those days. Soft Politicians and Wardens felt sorry for the prisoners and ended the power to reform with pain. Wonder how many guys were repeat offenders before they ended the corporal punishment?

I do not have any problems with symbols and hidden meaning to films and books etc, but who in the world notice? Who notice a number on a sign and assosiate that with a verse in the Bible?
And, what is actually the point if no one noticed?
And by the way, will anyone notice any symbolism in my comment?

  • @YoDempsey
    @YoDempsey 4 года назад +2

Yes, you missed tons of symbolism! The crucifixion, the mirror sunglasses, and the cross (roads) at the very end of the movie. Probably many more.

I liked the video because of the ten commandment connection. I think you have something there. Luke's number being one more than the prison as a symbol of Luke being above the prison is also great. The Bible verses, however, don't seem to have any real connection to the content of the film. It's a good hunch for study but I don't think its born out by the evidence. Nice video though. You have a great voice and do a good job of editing your essays together.

Elijah (Elias) rode a chariot of fire to enter heaven. Only 2 people (Enoch & Elijah) in the Bible went to heaven without dying. God also performed many miracles through Elijah, including resurrection (raising the dead), bringing fire down from the sky, and entering Heaven alive "by fire".

Just watched your video on Yorkshire Pudding and wanted to say excellent job!
Both the video and the pudding were brilliantly put together.
Although I am a soft Southener (London), as any good Yorkshireman would call me, I am a BIG fan of the
      mighty pudding.
We have it with roast dinners 99% of the time, but it is like a pancake so you can sweet or savoury it.
      Couple of points...
      Its "wood in 'ole"
'ole is hole with the "h" dropped.
Hence put the wood in the hole, close the door.
      Yorkshire Football Teams.
There are loads. Huddersfield Town, Barnsley, Hull City, Middlesbrough etc.
Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday are from the same city which is the world home of club football. Sheffield FC is recognised by FIFA as the first ever club.
Hot tea makes you sweat TO cool you off on a hot day. That's the point.
Also, Earl Grey tea is foul. Its what posh people drink. Its Queen Elizabeth's favourite apparently.
You should definitely try Yorkshire Tea by Taylors of Harrogate.
If you can get it over the pond there.
It will knock your socks off mate!

    • @smilesforcinephiles
      @smilesforcinephiles  4 года назад

      Ok, let’s test that.
How about Acts interpreted as the theory of evolution.....
You pick another character in a movie with a name in a book of the Bible who has a number on his shirt and I will interpret it.....

$Smiles for Cinephiles are you saying Luke evolved as a character? If so, most fictional characters evolve throughout the storyline. If you refer to Darwin’s work then Luke is probably a biological dead end. Psychology Luke may have changed some minds but that too would die out as new inmates enter the system. I believe you’re a Brit. Isn’t the church dying despite the Gospels being passed on.

Less numerological and more word pattern is the observation that COOL = KOOL = KULE is an anagram for LUKE. Now the question is what’s the significance of K and L and are they interchangeable. Which brings us to the Kappa Lambda Light Chain Ratio that immunologists speak of in measuring the production of antibodies. And the connection to the film breaks wide open with clarity and foreshadows Luke’s demise.

You are giving way too much credit to the writer of the story, Donn Pearce. He was not a literary scholar, he was a criminal who spent two years on a road gang and wrote a memoir/fiction about it. He wrote the first draft of the script and Frank Pierson did not make many changes. You are reaching.
