    So jealous. The 90s GM trucks were what trucks should be: A bench seat, a big engine and a bed. No navigation, no heated seats, no LED cup holders. Just a seat, a bed and and engine.

      Those SS trucks are so rare, so hard to come-by. We re-sprayed one last year for an older guy who had it since new. Completely stock, it still had a good thump to it, a bit of balls to from what he told me. These trucks look SO nice when they are well kept like this!

    My grandfather had a 93, burgundy exterior and interior...he gave it to my dad, and then I drove it for the first year I had my license. Wish I could say he gave it to me, but he sold it after I got my own car. That truck made me fall in love with trucks in general and is the reason I own a truck now. One day I'll probably end up owning another one just like it and relive it. Cool to see another guy enjoying his dads old chevy.

    I like your new addition to the garage, and I can also relate - directly, believe it or not. Dad found a few months ago that has a stomach cancer - he's taking chemo for it, seeing doctors, he's doing pretty good right now.
    But he also decided to downsize. He called me a couple of months ago and asked me to come visit Florida. Since he had two pickups there at his house, he decided that I should have one of them. So I went down there, did a bunch of repair work on the other truck, some repair work on his house, and the garage. Then I drove home with an '86 Silverado.
    He gave me the better one of the two. This '86 C-body (or is it a K-body?) Silverado has the little 305, but the entire thing drives like it's brand new. It was owned by a Nebraska farmer, who kept this thing locked in a barn for most of it's life. And he was the type to repair or replace anything that went wrong with it, and kept it well serviced. So it's just a 30 year old gem of a long-bed pickup.
    I'm right there with you, man. Dad sold me his "old" truck for $1, even though it feels like it's driving right off the dealer's lot. I _did_ have to spend a few hours tuning the carb to make it run properly, before I left Florida and drove to N. Alabama, but that's okay. Once I got it properly adjusted, it putters without a single miss and absolutely purrs like a kitten on the highway. ;)

    Sweet truck! check under the doors under the rubber for rust and treat it now, They all get it there. Those TBI engines are mad easy to fix and fun to mod I have a 94 C1500. You can get new aftermarket window channel seals for them for CHEAP like 30 bucks a peice. it could have a LOCKING rear differential so the wheels still spin opposite when they are in the air, Mine does the same with the Governor locker. Check for code G80 in the glove box, that's the locker. Raise the base ignition timing 1-2 degrees and it will be quicker off the time. Adjust the rear drums as tight as they can, put braided brake hoses on it.. If it still has a sinky pedal and it has REAR abs, air is trapped in those solenoid valves off the Prop valve. You need to bleed the brakes" all day" and it will fix it. Or crack the brake line where it goes into that stupid solenoid and bleed it from there

I've done more hands on wrenching on trucks like this than any other vehicle, because they are THAT easy to work on, and service, and maintain. • @bagnome
      @bagnome 7 лет назад +6

      I wouldn't want to remove any of the stickers either, though I'd probably remove the Vietnam vet sticker for the same reason he said, so he doesn't misrepresent. Though I'd keep the rest. I like all of them.
      Similarly, when my dad got his new truck, he gave me his old Tahoe. Though technically it was still his. I'm still a college student, so he kept it under his name. Though that meant, until he sold it, the plates on it said Air Force Retired. So I felt weird driving with them on. I think one day I had an old motorcyclist pass me giving me a thumbs up as if he were thanking me for my service, or at least the guy he thought was driving the vehicle.
      Just like I've had friends in JROTC go to Walmart directly after school on a uniform day. They've had people thanking them for their service. lmao

    Install Manual Transmission

    6 or so videos right there

    • @MustangsbyMatt
      @MustangsbyMatt 7 лет назад

      IIGrayfoxII Why are disc brakes better than drums on the rear?

    • @MustangsbyMatt
      @MustangsbyMatt 7 лет назад

      Flame Beats I might go with you on the heat front, but better stopping power? Not really. The rear brakes only do about 20ish percent of the braking, right. The trade off for less heat then is a much smaller contact area and higher maintenance costs per brake. I'm not saying it's completely useless, it's just not completely necessary. IMHO.

    • @FCFordLord
      @FCFordLord 7 лет назад

      Matt Grimes It's cheaper to replace discs than drums, and much less frequent that you need to. Drums tend to warp more often, sometimes enough that you can't turn them.
      The contact area isn't an issue. Calipers exert more force, making the brake more effecient.
      In my experience with drums and discs, discs offer much more controlled braking, less service costs, all around a better experience.

    • @MustangsbyMatt
      @MustangsbyMatt 7 лет назад

      FCFordLord Now we're getting into secondary functions a bit. A good set of rear drums can last for 100,000+ miles before needing to be serviced. Disc brakes are nice but again, the drum system works just fine. Between 60 and 90 percent of a vehicle's stopping power comes from the front wheels, it's clear that a well-designed, modern drum brake is all that's required for most rear wheel brake duty.

    • @sacrificialrook6283
      @sacrificialrook6283 7 лет назад +2

      A much cheaper option would be to find drop-in replacement wheel cylinders that do a better job and refresh the master cylinder. Drums may not be "da best" but you'd be surprised how effective upgraded wheel cylinders can be.

      +Ivan Shires Yeah, the rust from the road salt makes the car break in half LONG before it needs to be inspected for breaks or anything.
      Seriously though, I bought a Saab (which don't rust like an American or Asian vehicle) and it was really rusty underneath. I lived in PA at the time and now in Florida, so I've put a stop to a lot of the rust, but I still need to go through every year and try and stop the little spots from getting bigger.

      I live in Ontario, Canada, smack middle of the heavy winters and salty roads. I feel Eric's pain with his Acuras. I own 2 Acura Integras, a 91, and 92. Same model and colour, similar mileage. One was garage kept and undercoated, taken care of. Minimal rust bubbles, rusty windshield from a bad job. The 91 needed outer rocker panels, a bunch of patchwork, and a rusty windshield that was never replaced or touched. Go figure. Care goes a long way.

    • @pkuudsk9927
      @pkuudsk9927 7 лет назад +1

      LOL we don'rt live anywhere near salt water ,but, you would think we park our cars in the ocean nightly. I have sent more cars to the rust grave than I care to think about.
      Wash wax oil under coat and the government salts the roads so hard we can't win. Every intersection gets 100 lbs of salt every 3 hours ,mainly because it's so cheap from the Goderich mines. I sooooo wish they would switch to beat juices. I bought a rust free car from the lower states and 5 years it was no longer rust free

    • @jetjazz05
      @jetjazz05 7 лет назад +1

      P Kuudsk I moved to Florida (where my wife is from) and you can find 80s Japanese cars here rust free still, it's crazy.
      Funny though, the heat destroys all window and door gaskets and seals as well as the crack the interior plastic and shred it into crumbled trash, but up north the rust claims everything metal. In a way you need a rusted out northern car for the interior that got destroyed by the heat in the south, then you'd have a car in good shape.

    very sweet truck indeed. finally i get to watch you work on a great American product. i love my chevies, but imports just arent my thing. the crappy exhuast is just an excuse. speed daddy headers and get the rest of the exhaust from jegs. hooker, magnaflow, or borla.
    the 350 is a great base to work from. you can get a bored out throttle body, a better cam, and better heads. those are really the three things that hold these engines back. or keep it stock, the 350 is hardly worn out at 180K. i have a 1996 camaro with the LT1, a similar engine. 226K and still runs great and pulls hard for her age.
    or there is the option of installing a LS series engine.
    either way what you have on your hands is a sweetheart, one of the best trucks GM ever produced. quite a few of this generation of truck is still on the road around here but most of them are rotting to the gills. yours is in fantastic shape lots of potential to do whatever you want. daily driver, street rod, ect. you name it. awesome truck.

      andrew donohue The aftermarket is an Olympic swimming pool filled with products for SBC motors.
      GM hit the ball clear into the next county with the SBC.
      They make good power, they're easy to work on, they run for goddamn ever, they run like a raped ape even when problems come up, and they respond so well to upgrades, it's almost as if GM intended for people to upgrade them.
      For Fuck's sake, you can find tons of even the most diehard F*rd boys who put a SBC in their project. F*rd used to run advertisements begging hot rodders to "Put a F*rd in your F*rd" because literally everybody was running a Chevy power train.

    Exactly how I feel about my Dad's 1978 GMC C1500 in the back. 10 years ago we did quite of bit of work from upgrading the 250 L6 for a L69 305 V8 from a Caprice, added leather bucket seats and converted the three on the tree to a Hurst floor shift kit. I about the same amount of total miles. Just a simple truck, that is quirky, but still a blast to drive and to have.

    I've never seen an 88-98 Gen Chevy truck that wasn't hemorrhaging oil from every fucking seal.
    I know you will be happy with it. Those are fantastic trucks! I never owned that body style but, I have driven and serviced dozens of them.
    If it were me, I'd be nervous about that hack job transmission leaving me stranded.
    I would do a header back or at least see if it will accept Ram's Horn manifolds.
    I'd fix all the leaks
    I'd replace the shocks
    I'd find a limited slip rear end
    I'd just rebuild the entire brake system 100%
    Find those same wheels in a 16x8 ish and get BFG 31x10.5R16 All-Terrain T/A KO rubbers. Maybe KO2s
    Auxiliary fuel tank for sure
    Spray in bed liner
    Behind the cab toolbox
    Possibly a heavier front sway bar
    Towing with a hald ton... eh... It's certainly doable and my 06 with a 5.3 has a frame mount but, I wouldn't ever try anything crazy with it.
    You might check with F.A.S.T. or Edelbrock about an upgraded TBI. I really don't know or care to learn about TBI but, I'm sure somebody sells a better mousetrap.
    Hell, now that I think about it, you might even consider a front leveling kit and a set of 33" tires. That helps with the yard work quite a bit.
    I was so relieved to find out that you got a Chevy and not a damn F*rd.
    I logged in on my phone, saw you had a new video called ETCG gets a truck but, the thumbnail pic didn't load. I closed my eyes and was like "Please dear GOD, let it be a Chevy!"

    I have a 1991 Chevy C1500 i inherited from my brother who inherited it from our grandpa, for being a 5.7 extended cab with 3.73 posi rear end it gets up and goes. Has 207k miles on except the trans lol. It now has a much better beefed up 700r4 with the usual issues corrected. I plan to turn the 350 into a 383 stroker its something my grandpa always wanted to do with it. Pretty clean truck except for a few spots of rot here and there witch will be fixed since i have the pannels for it im just not a body man so will probably have a friend fix that area up. Owning this truck just brings back all sorts of memories in it driving around with my grandpa and while cleaning the interior finding all sorts of things that were his. It even smells the same as it did. Ahhh vehicles can hold such good memories hope to make some new ones with my kids.

      That truck could be over 20 feet long with a Crew Cab/Long Box option. Those are awesome for hauling equipment around and loading up 6 workers into one rig, but for the average person it's overkill. I've had huge trucks before, and now I have one the same as ETCG's and it's the perfect size for running into tiny parking lots and throwing a sofa in the back. You don't need anything bigger if it's just a truck for occasionally hauling a boat around or picking up mulch from the store ;-)

    Cool truck, my daily driver is a 1991 GMC c1500 extended cab with the manual 5 speed and the 4.3L 262 engine. AND it was my late fathers truck, I love the thing. It had sat 10 years when I decided to put it back on the road. When I'm driving it, I feel like my dads still with me. With the engine needing a complete rebuild I considered dropping a used 350 into it but decided to keep it the way my dad had it. I did through in different cam to give me more low end torque (which worked out great). The trucks not quite as clean as your truck but is mechanically very sound. All the work I've done my self and I don't hesitate driving it anywhere. And I do plan on fixing the exterior aesthetics (paints rough, little rust) but the interior (minus the dash) is flawless. Thanks for sharing this video, big fan of the channel and look forward to seeing more videos on the truck.

Before September of this year my Stepfathers Car with receive the disc brake posi, both sway bars, the hood, the spoiler, and the 350 from the Iroc. Then, I will surprise him by letting him present the car at the Street Machine Nationals in September. His health is on the slide so he doesn't have time or energy for the build. He will still get to enjoy the car tho and that's all that matters to me.

    Lol, like you, I have a "new" Chevy 1500 SS awd. Not my dad's truck but one found on a used car lot. PO obviously loved and cared for it. Crawling under, over, on, in, around, found fresh fluid everywhere. No leaks. Wear and tear bits and bobs replaced, upgraded. Took it home after negotiating 15+ year old prices and citing sun faded and peeling clear coat on one or two panels.
    Turns out, transfer case and both differentials were also serviced. But regardless, all new fluid wherever fluid could be dropped & packed, installing OEM brake pads and rotors and replacing calipers, stainless, braided brake lines and stainless fuel supply-n-return; new battery and slowly correcting paint and re-shooting paint and clear after rust removal and rust covering primer. She's a fire shooting, exhaust crackling, turbo Euro car eating beast! She walks away from Raptors and most stock "performance" sport cars and trucks rapidly. Previous owner also added a proper tune, MSD ignition computer, two-step launch (with hidden, under dash button by OBD-II plug) matching MSD coil packs and wires + a mild cam that shifts a bit of grunt mid-range. She goes on OEM iridiums.
    We all know and understand your love of mods, but that 350 will certainly wake up with built, forged, over bored internals to where she can rip you face off, but still tow, grocery fetch and well mannered at easier throttle input without fear of loaning it to mom, girlfriend/wife, etc.
    Like you, no. My '03 SS is not for sale. Shoot me dead first, your chances are better. And too, no. You may not borrow it. I'd rather suffer through toting your shopping, towing your boat/trailer...than just blindly hand over the keys. It took me three weeks to re-train my throttle foot so that I wasn't leaving gouges in the tarmac behind me. I usually drive like grandpa! She runs like a scalded dog with just a twitch of your toe...O.o))
    Totally love and jealous of your rig...those classic square bodied Chevy trucks are timeless, gorgeous beasts!

    I bought a 91 K1500 Work Truck with standard cab long box with the 5 speed and the 4.3L V6 in 2000. Paid 3600 for it and it included a brand new windshield. It was the first really nice vehicle I had bought myself. For the WT package it was equipped pretty nice. It actually had AC, carpeted floors and cloth seats. The 4.3L was a bit weak though, and heading into a strong headwind, I'd usually have to leave it in 4th gear to maintain highway speed.
    The body was mint. No rust because North Dakota doesn't use salt in the winter. We use sand only.
    My sister and I used it on a road trip to Denver CO in 2002, and on one of the tankfuls of gas, we got 23 mpg with it. That impressed me considerably since I had been getting around 19 with it usually. But that was the first road trip it had been on since I bought it.
    When I moved to Georgia for 3 years in 2003, I sold it to my parents and it became their "good" truck on the farm. I had bought a 97 C2500 to replace it for the move.
    Dad did replace the engine when it started burning more oil than gas, and it did get hit on the interstate when another driver lost control of his vehicle on an icy patch and smacked the drivers rear fender on the box. It did also tweak the frame some but we got it straightened back out and put a different box on it.
    I still love driving it when I go out to the farm and still consider it my pickup.

    Hi Eric, your video makes me remember when I decided to drive my dad's (R.I.P.) Toyota. Mom had it sitting in the garage for a long time and didn't run well when started. I "resurrected" it and its my daily car now. And yes, I still call it my dad's car. :)

    That truck is really beautiful for its age & mileage!!! One of the best body styles and best built.

    Fellow '90 1500'er here: 4.3L V6 manual 4x4 single cab long bed. I too am in love with mine. Gold top and bottom with red sides. Her name is Darlene. Really excited to see what you do with this one! Can't believe there's no rust in the cab corners, must have been an inside-truck. Hopefully you'll redo the radio and exhaust soon so I can get ideas :)

    Eric
    I have the 1989 extended cab shortbed with the same engine and manuel trans, same 10 bolt rearend with 3:08 to 1 gears. Put the manuel back in, its awesome! I get about 17 in the city and 23.5 on the highway. Mine is a daily driver that has just over 300k and I bought it off my Dad when he got too bad to drive anymore. Slowly but surely I am returning it back to its full glory just like it was the day it rolled off the assembly line. With the exception of the R-34 Skyline I owned while in Japan, its the best vehicle I have ever owned!!!
