Mögest du in Frieden ruhen ❤️

He played as a forward in THIS game. So me and my dad had the honor to shake the hand of one of Germanys first ever world champions. I feel honored till today. I'm German but when I hear or read of Puskas, Kocsis, Hidegkuti, Boszik, Csibor, Grosics I start glowing. Several exceptional players in one team, each an all-time great in his own right, but all playing with understated class and humility - the star was the team. The greatest national side ever in my book, at least relative to their peers. Ahead even of Brazil 1958, Brazil 1970, Spain 2010.

OK I admit it’s close. In my book Brazil 1958 is a close second, and I wouldn't protest if someone ordered it the other way round. Brazil 1970 is third, just ahead of or jointly with Spain 2010 (Iniesta, Busquets, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Ramos, David Villa, Puyol, Piquet).

@Henry Kaspar - No, my friend, that's a nonsense. The 1954 Hungary team were clearly NOT ahead of Brazil 1958. Consider the fact that more or less the same 1958 Brazil team went on to win in 1962. So, no one would ever agree with you. But in the list of the greatest teams NEVER TO WIN THE WORLD CUP, I'd rank Hungary as number 1. Here's my top-3 list:
      1. Hungary (1954)
      2. Netherlands (1974)
      3. Brazil (1950)

In some ratings the Hungarian team is rated as number one,all time,as it had a 50 game winning streak,up to the loss against Germany.Of course, these ratings are subjective, but it is broadly acknowledged that during that time period it was the greatest.

    • @wiseonwords
      @wiseonwords 2 года назад +15

@@petergunner8666 - my friend, I assure you that I did not forget about the Brazil team of 1982-1986. You rattle off the names of the Brazil stars as if you've just discovered them. Or as if you have the naive belief that having big names in a team is all that impressive. Surely, you realise (as do most football lovers) that the Brazil team of 1982 was NOT a complete team? In Waldir Peres, they had a mediocre goalkeeper, and while their wing-backs were sensational going forward, they were less than stellar when defending. And the less said about the truly mediocre centre-forward Serginho the better. Finally, I find it baffling that you would even mention the England team of 1990 in this conversation. It was a pretty decent team, but amongst the best in all of footballing history? Really? You've got to be trolling! Either that or ....Well, I won't say it. But I wish you all the best.

Good evening Alexander. Helmut Rahn started his career in Katernberg. But obviously you mean Essen, a great town which I love very much, I'm a regular visitor at the Aalto Opera House, (I live near Gummersbach).
Maybe you've read Helmut Rahn's football biography: "Mein Hobby Tore schießen". I always think of him when I enter the old Wallfahrtskirche in Neviges.
The reason? He was married in this church.
He also played for FC Köln, MSV Duisburg and Enschede.

@@franciszekkowalski7160 Good evening Franciszek. "The drugs" was an invention spread by the DDR (GDR), the politicians had hoped that their socialistic friends would win. Indeed, the shoes were better, this has been generally admitted but this is not unfair. FIFA decides which shoes are relevant. You are right, the Puskas offside goal is at least debatable, but this has nothing to do with "win the game not in a fair way." It was a decision by the referee.
The result could have been the other way round, that's a fact for me.
I have always felt pity with the Hungarian team. They played such a wonderful football, in this case they should have become World Cup winners. But it was a tournament and this is a bit different. Italy lost against North Korea (1966) and England against the USA (1950), for Brazil it was a national tragedy compared with Hungary when they lost against Uruguay in Rio 1950.
I have a critical look at my country, hardly anyone had realized what the defeat in the final meant for Hungary and they had a terrible time in 1955 when the Soviets came with their tanks.
But it is a slight consolation, look at the comment by Henry Kaspar, that some of the Hungarian players had enormous success in European teams.

The World Cup victory gave Germany a newfound sense of pride and happiness. Some historians even consider this victory a turning point for post-war Germany.

Everybody knew the Hungarians were exceptional. Second and third best were arguably Brazil (finalist in 1950, and already containing bits and pieces of the great 1958 team) and Uruguay (defending champion). Only then came the other European teams, one of them Germany. By the way the 1954 WC was organized, Hungary had to play Brazil and Uruguay in the quarter- and semifinals, being forced into overtime by Uruguay - and this may have contributed to Hungary lacking a bit legs in the final's ultimate 20 minutes.

All 4 of Germanys World Cup wins have been special each in their own unique way.
What makes the 1954 triumph so impressive is that before a ball was kicked in the tournament no one would have believed that West Germany would had a chance of winning.
West Germany were unseeded to begin with, today such a thought would be seen as complete folly but in 1954 this was not the case.
They came out as winners despite all odds been stacked against them and to been the first team to defeat the Magical Magyars as they were known in the final was especially a fantastic achievement

I read about this historic match and thank you for bringing it to life. When you consider how strong the Hungarian team was for three or four years leading up to this WC Final and that Germany was a defeated and broken nation, this is a remarkable achievement on the part of the German team. This game had exiting goals and near-goals (hit posts, hit crossbars, an apparent goal called back due to off-sides). It could be the most exciting final in WC history (Yes, more exciting than the 1966 Final). Also - Was nice to see the original Jules Rimet Trophy. A national shame that it stolen in 1983 while in the possession of the Brazil football association. Speaking of shame - How about the behavior of the Hungarian goalkeeper at the 10:10 mark?

As a German that was born 14 years after this triumph it is only a piece of history. Nevertheless this game give me goosebumps like no other, because I know what this victory meant for both Germany and Hungary. In 1954 Germany was recovering from the ashes and the moral collapse that both WWII and the Holocaust had inflicted on it. Hungary was a country run by a Stalin-like party leader that wanted to shine by the triumph of his team. That's why even those who rightly claim that if this final would have been played a 100 times, Hungary would probably have won the 99 other matches, should recognize why it was right, that Germany won. This was like West against East in the early stages of the Cold War. The eleven players from that German team were modest til the end of their lives, even though they had achieved so much for their country. However, for the Hungarian players this one defeat was a nightmare that would follow them til the last day of their lives. Especially their goalkeeper suffered greatly as he was made the scapegoat of that defeat.

Hungary were undoubtedly the favourites having an unbeaten record that stretched back four years to 1950.In 1952,Hungary were also the Olympic gold medallist at the Olympic Games held at Helsinki.
Also,Hungary had convincingly beaten English twice at Wembley(6-3) and then at the Nep Stadium(7-1).
Surely Hungary were expected to walk over West Germany in the final but that day Sepp Herbeger's charges shocked the football world as West Germany beat Hungary 3-2 with Helmut Rahn scoring the winner.
Incredibly it may sound, but that 1954 World Cup defeat to West Germany was Hungary's only defeat from 1950-1956.

I guess it is a national trait of Die Mannschaft to continue fighting, despite being down 2-0 within the first 15 minutes, and claw their way back to 2-2 before scoring the winning goal with 5 minutes left. It is my humble opinion that this fighting-back trait has been (somewhat) lacking in the Germany teams within the last 10 years or so. All in all, wonderful highlights of a very exciting match!

Everything's going down the tubes in terms of Kampfgeist since they get paid wayyy too much. The last German players I saw that Kampfgeist was Schweinsteiger and Lahm, talk about Germans that are tough to take down!
