Now is as good a time as any to say that "Mister Saxon" is an anagram for "Master No. Six", because this one's actor, John Simm, plays the sixth (edit: on-screen) version of the Master (actually seventh, but one version was played by two different actors)
@najhoant how was he the 6th? U had Delgado version, ainley version, then the one version played by Peter pratt and someone I can't recall... so simm is 4th, or if u want to separate the pratt master it could be 5
- That drumbeat is so infectious. Years after first watching this I still tap it out if I'm in a bad mood. - "This is Gallifrey" which plays when The Doctor is describing his and the Master's childhood is one of my favorite DW tracks. Perfectly conveys the feeling of longing for childhood and a home that's not there anymore. - 14:41 The Doctor actually wore a similar outfit in the Classic Who story "The Deadly Assassin". The 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) put it on when trying to stop The Master from killing the President of the Time Lords - Other Classic Who references were The Master repeating "Peoples of the ___ attend careful" which he said in a Classic Who story and at one point he offers his wife "a jelly baby" a candy which the 4th Doctor would regularly offer to friends and enemies.
The master watching teletubbies is a little easter egg, a throwback to classic who when the master was watching an equivalent kids tv show from 70s called the clangers....
SPECIFICALLY SPOILER FREE FOR ANYTHING AFTER THIS EPISODE: Personally, I've always liked the idea that in an early regeneration (one we haven't seen or heard of) that The Master was female and was the mother to The Doctor's child. Thus making The Master The Doctor's crazy ex who he has a forever connection with due to their child and granddaughter Susan. It would explain so much, The Master's obsession of trying to get The Doctor's attention, The Doctor's constant wish to "save" The Master, The Master's mental state getting worse with every regeneration (he didn't always used to be so crazy), etc.
People didn't just theorise the "secret brother" thing. On three separate occasions in Classic Who the writers were going to do that, but it was never done. At most, it's vaguely kind of half implied once, and even then it's such a nothing moment that you probably wouldn't even think that's what they're going for if you didn't already know the behind the scenes.
The Master is one of the THE Classic villains. He was in 21 stories in Classic Who, which puts him up with the Daleks. He was designed as a kind of Moriarty to the Doctor's Holmes. An intellectual equal. The success of the character was primarily down to the first actor to play him - the legendary Roger Delgado. Such a don
Fun fact: The Toclafane, at keast in part, were dreamed up back in the development of Series 1, to replace the Daleks in the event that the Terry Nation estate would not reach an agreement with the BBC, blocking them from being able to use the Daleks, additional fun fact, this would not be the first time, for about 5 years starting in the 2nd Doctor's era the BBC ''were'' blocked from using the Daleks while Terry Nation was trying to orchastrate a US led Dalek spin off, during which time there were a few attempts to create replacement icons, I don't recall any of them turning up since then, (unless you count the Cybermen, but they debuted before the Dalek ban came into effect) you can tell how well it went, for both parites, which is why by the end of the Third Doctor's run the Daleks returned.
You were wondering if it was theorized about the Master being the Doctor's brother. That wasn't just a theory, that was hinted before in the classic series and almost happened many times, but Doctor Who is the master in the art of being ambiguous so, really, the truth is what you make of it. Great reaction, Emme! This episode is really cool and I imagine that with all of the context Torchwood brings, it makes it even better. I didn't knew Torchwood was a thing, but they made the episode in a way that it's ok to watch it even if you don't know nothing at all about the spin-off which is great.
14:43 You can find photographs of David wearing those Time Lord robes online - he's obviously enough of a fanboy that he wouldn't resist taking the opportunity when it presented itself ^_~
I suddenly realised that when The Master watched the Telly Tubbies it was a call-back to Roger Delgado's much earlier incarnation. I can't remember which episode it was, but he mistook puppets from a kid's TV series called The Clangers for lifeforms.
The guy who lives across the road from my parents, who always used to shout at us when we were kids for kicking our football into his garden, is called Harry Saxon 😂
Yes, people theorized the Master was the Doctor’s brother :D. He first showed up as the doctor’s arch-nemesis in the 1970s. There are a number of times when both Russell Davies and Stephen Moffat (who were both fans before the ‘new’ series) poke fun at all the fan theories. RTD didn’t know what “president elect” meant… he thought it was another word for president. And I’m sure the actor was British. It was a very “americany American accent” :D. This episode was quite good, especially the flashbacks to Gallifrey. Classic fans knew who. the Master was, but this was written in a way to clearly inform new fans without an obvious exposition dump. As far as aging, yes, time lords age, and one of the doctor’s regenerations was from old age. But they age slowly.
Yes! Life On Mars is amazing and so underrated! Also his character in there is named after Rose Tyler so you know the creators were fans of Doctor Who which is a plus lol
I'm so enjoying this. It was nice to see the Saxon posters in Torchwood, and now into this story which is my favorite finale that RTD has done so far. Great reaction Emme, and I can't wait for next episode!
Emme, I don't know if I mentioned it in the last video's comment, but I love that hair colour on you! It looks fantastic! Also.... adorable kitten you've got! Anyway, about the episode: Yeah, Harold Saxon IS a name you've heard before in previous episodes, and he is a Timelord, known as The Master. And yeah, he IS unhinged to the nth degree. 5:50 - You would have to watch "Classic Dr. Who" to fully understand who The Master is. 12:05 - Emme, don't try to overthink it, right now. You'll get your answers later (kinda a spoiler, but trust me, you'll put it out of your mind) 18:40 - I don't know if you've ever read/watched the original Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy (you should! You'll love it!), but there's something in there called a "Somebody Else's Problem" field, which basically makes you invisible to someone, because their brain considers you "Somebody Else's Problem", and not something YOU need to worry about. Douglas Adams was British, and the original adaption of the first two books were made by the BBC. You would probably like it, but it's absolutely insane! The books are great, the BBC version is wonderful, but the Hollywood version is complete shite. Red Dwarf is another show you may enjoy from the BBC.
6:23 the guys were a popular band at the tine this episode came out (think they were called McFly); the lady was a high profile Conservative politcian in the UK (Anne Widdecombe). She is now a vocal supporter of Farage, Brexit and Trunp, so perfectly cast to support Saxon. 😅
I used to work besides the BBC radio office in central London, and when McFly visited the kids in the local school across the road put up a big sign in their window ‘McFly are g**’ 😂
14:20 OMG - in the mid 90s there was a plan to relaunch Dr Who in a cross production with the US. The Master was going to be the Doctor's secret brother. They ditched the plans, only the pilot telemovie exists.
The Master is an OLD Doctor Who villain. First appearing in 1971, during the 3rd Doctor's era. The drums was added for this incarnation. As to why the drums, there is an answer, but you'll have to wait.
I randomly came upon this two partner on TV one night and this is the reason I became obsessed with this show. I went back to the beginning right after. ❤
The Master explained on the television scene what they were "The Toclafane". Gallifrey is the name of the Doctor's home planet as was said back in "The Runaway Bride".
I love that despite Torchwood Cardiff only has 5 members left, Jack says 'half a dozen of us', meaning he remembered to include the estranged opperative who has survived and is solely responsible for the only other Torchwood branch that he talks about in Episode 1 of Torchwood
John Simm was so good as The Master, his version is so much more unhinged and insane from the other incarnations. Also I love how he planned for everything perfectly, he was 100 steps ahead of The Doctor. The Sound of Drums are extremely important and you will find out what that means later on, The Master uses it as hypnotism, which he is a master at, pun intended. He used hypnotism a lot back in the day but they are more than just a device. Also The Master, while he is The Doctor’s archenemy, The Doctor cares about him, he was his best friend and now one of the only Time Lords in existence.
Fine I'm going to subscribe, quick question though, Lucy Saxon is on that floating airship with her husband, does that make her Lucy in the sky with diamonds? I love vague prophecies, it's only a spoiler in hindsight after you learned the terrible truth. Have fun with the doctor luv. I believe the next episode has the devil looking forward to that.
BThe people you didn't recognise promoting Saxon were mcfly a popular band around that time and ann widdicombe a politician both are still active as well but only mcfly are actually still relatively popular. It's a bit ironic the season one episode also was about the end of the world. I'm terms of the relationship between the doctor and the master among some people there was a question of maybe it was a bit more than friendship at least from the masters side which is why the doctor is surprised when he sees him with a wife but there's nothing cannon that suggests this. The guy playing the us president is Canadian but grew up in the States
14:14 I'm not sure if this was the intent but this might of been a dig at Universal Studios. But it requires some pretty niche knowledge to get. In 1996 Universal Studios worked with the BBC on a TV movie which was meant to act as a backdoor reboot of Doctor Who. The TV movie didn't do great, so the TV show was cancelled which is just as well because since then behind the scenes reports and pretty solidly confirmed leaks have given a look at what might of been. The plot of the opening season (which would of been produced by Universal) would of included the revelation that the Doctor and the Master were half brothers and they would team up in order to search for their missing father Ulysses. Needless to say fans are glad we got the 2005 reboot instead of that. All that said the movie does have something of a following now (although a lot of it's fans have knowledge of the Big Finish stories that retcon and recontextualise a lot of the movie) and Paul McGann, who debuted as the 8th Doctor in the movie, is a fan favourite to many as he's done some superb Doctor Who audio dramas and is very active in the fandom at conventions and signing events.
I also once remember hearing that there was a potential plotline for the Doctor and the Master to be revealed as brothers back in the 70's which would have given the Master a redemption arc but it never got made because of Roger Delgado's death.
These two episodes are so good. John Simm is excellent as the Master, a lot of interesting questions get asked, a lot of interesting scenarios get set up. Yeah the master for New Who is interesting as while in Old Who, the war part New Who focuses on and being the last one really does change the meaning. Ah time.jump thanks to Jack. Ah the Utopia. The tapping, the drums. They explain it. Always when he is around. Yeah he doesn't exist, like Jack, he is a perosna. I forget Lazarus matters too here. They do align different aspects from the past episodes for sure. Yeah bunch of UK actors no idea who they are. Yeah brain washing. Lucy his wife and everyone else around him. Only Torchwood or others know the truth. Yeah the Toklophane (no idea how to spell it) it's very sad once they explain them further. In the phones like Cybermen hmmmm..... Yep back to 42 the holding them hostage...... Scene. Ah yes Torchwood pushed aside hmm. Too much tv XD A date and secret brother. Gallifrey getting shown in CGI it's beautiful. Ah UNIT stepping in right. I always think of it as a US service type as I forget how often UNIT steps in around early New Who besides old who or later new who. Ah Tellitubes yep what a show. Television in your stomach. I didn't mind it back in the day. Used to have a Lala toy too. Here comes the drums taking on a new meaning (if anything about the bass then while an over done thing in some songs my pick would be Draper Night Rider of that ever had to align with something)..... So next episode is gets really sad but Martha does an excellent job just like the Family of Blood (I know seen the members only mention in the playlist and your weeks ahead videos). It's so funny and smartly written. It's goofy but in a charming way. Well it would be scary, fair theories you had but yeah...... Killing people and the Utopia has a different meaning when you find out (members marked and 4 weeks ahead of course but yep I bet it does as it's very twisted). Yep very sad. The news, tv shows (like S2 EP11/12) and other details Davies does is usually pretty good. The stakes are interesting. The perception filter, Martha not being noticed mentioned again and Jack knows like what happened with Rose. The little details are very entertaining. Him being a leader in plain sight this way is interesting. Then of course goes further. Anagrams for Yana/Master. Didn't know the master one but another comment or put it and it makes sense.
Hello Emme!😊 The Master has been known to be crazy.😉 The drumming is something we have not seen with The Master in the past. The Doctor has worn that Time Lord outfit in the original series. This was your first look at Gallifrey, The Doctor's home. Great reactions to this crazy episode, Emme!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 How will the season end?
May be a spoiler if you are going to go back and watch Classic who. 14:16 the master is a classic who villan on the same level as the Daleks, and was the main character in a US-made attempt to reboot Doctor Who in the mid 1990s. That attempted reboot resulted in just one TV movie - so the writer was taking a dig at this exact plot point in that story which was very controversial.
Daleks, Cybermen, Master. The big 3 classic villains that everyone was waiting for when Doctor Who came back in 2005. The trinity is now complete. After Sharon Osbourne, that was boyband McFly, and former MP Anne Widdecome. Her inclusion is probably the weirdest, given she's a real politician, the BBC probably shouldn't be featuring her like that. And given her actual political career in the last decade or so, RTD likely wouldn't let her anywhere near the show these days.
@MuchWhittering oh Anne Widdecombe might not be the most popular person for this now, but given her career (especially over the last deacde) she is the perfect politician to endorse someone like Harold Saxon. 🤣😅🤣
The reason the Master turns the Doctor old-er is because in the last episode the Doctor saw the Master old and dying and the Master felt embarrassed to be seen like that by the Doctor, so in this episode he humiliates the Doctor by ageing him.
A lot of people like the idea that the Master is the Doctor's brother, but it doesn't really work. In the Master's debut episode (in the Third Doctor's tenure), he and the Doctor have met at least once, but mostly know each other by reputation. Also, on a couple of occasions, the Master tries to get the Doctor to join him, and his attempt at establishing a connection is that they're both Time Lords, implying that's the closest available link. Lastly there's a 20th anniversary special with all (as of then) five Doctors, and the First Doctor doesn't know the Master at all. But they've been fighting each other for a long time now, so they loom pretty large in each other's minds by now.
The masters like the joker to the docters batman he doesnt want to kill the docter he wasnts to change him their old friends and the master still sees himself as the docters best friend but the master sees humans as below timelords so he allways acting out to try prove humans are not worth loving to the docter also he loves mind control
Utopia is the best episode of this finale 3-parter, imo, but this one isn't too bad - until the last 5-10 minutes, anyway. I think this story would have been far better if they'd just stuck to having it be The Doctor, Martha and Jack being hunted by every resource the Prime Minister has at his disposal, with them needing to find a way to bring down The Master in the process. Instead it all gets a bit silly. And then, in the finale, completely stupid. Not a fan.
15:25 I don’t think he is being honest. I think the Doctor was the first group he mentioned, those who were inspired. He saw all of time and space so was never going to be content with a life on Galifrey - he saw all of time through the schism, and knew he had to experience it firsthand.
The lady standing outside with Big Ben quite far behind her is long time very traditional values Conservative MP Anne Widdecombe. I may not agree with some of her views, but I have a lot of respect for her. She’s also quite famous for her appearances on chat shows, game shows and other TV programs.
@Temeraire101 she is also quite a prominent aupporter of Brexit, Farage and Trump - the writers really knew what they were doing casting her for this cameo. 😅🤣😅
The thing I don’t get is why the Master didn’t have a contingency plan for Leo. Clearly he must have known he existed if he knew who Martha was, so why did he allow him to wander around without getting him a job in his government to keep an eye on him too? Cos I don’t understand what the point of Leo’s character is. He’s thus entirely absent for the events of the finale, meaning that the trauma endured by them isn’t shared by their sibling… so why does he exist? The party in episode one could have been for Martha or Trish, Leo has no other role in the story so I don’t get why they bothered writing him in. Maybe they had other plans and the actor had other commitments?
IIRC, your final suggestion is correct - Leo was originally going to have played a much more prominent part in episode 13, but the actor was unavailable.
Unit isnt actualy ameeican its the uns anti alien group the docter works for them in older clasic who episodes so unit knows about time lords and aliens they just nit aloud to go public with ot
The Master being the Doctor's brother was going to be a real thing at one point but the actor that played the first master died in a car accident and the story was abandoned
Doctor has fought the Master since the 2nd Doctor era. They have used different actors to play the The Master but you can always recognize The Master no matter who is playing the character. Master is like the Ying and Yang to the Doctor. The only other Time Lords I know from the Classic era is Romana. She was a companion of the 4th Doctor. He was training her as an apprentice and I think he had some romantic interest for her since they were both Time lords. Eventually she did leave him to be on her own. He left her one of his K9 Models to help her.
I feel like of anyone implied to Romana's face that she could have had a crush on The Doctor, she'd throw up in her mouth a little. Also The Master was first introduced during the Third Doctor's Era.
Now is as good a time as any to say that "Mister Saxon" is an anagram for "Master No. Six", because this one's actor, John Simm, plays the sixth (edit: on-screen) version of the Master (actually seventh, but one version was played by two different actors)

The drums are a retcon.
Got to give props to The Master for the correct use of decimate, meaning 10%.
Its not its only meaning but yeah
@Cossieuk let's be honest, it was probably the master who invented the concept and introduced it to the Romans in the first place. 😅

I wish Jack had been a full-time Tardis companion for a run of episodes. The chemistry of him, 9, and Rose and him, Martha, and 10 is so fun
Sadly not because he is a time anomaly.
The Master is one of the THE Classic villains. He was in 21 stories in Classic Who, which puts him up with the Daleks. He was designed as a kind of Moriarty to the Doctor's Holmes.
@stevedavidson5038 interesting, I'd only ever heard the 90s one. But guess they resurrected an older idea for it.
Master and Doctor rivalry are like Batman vs Joker or Superman vs Luthor. They are equal opposites. Doctor is Good and Master is equally evil.
The Master sincerely enjoying strange children's television is consistent from Classic Who
sharon osbourne?! 😳 enjoyed your reaction 👍☺
I love units uniform in new who the red barret snd black jumpsuits really works for them being a united nations group
No with Roger Delgado.
Used to be a time the Master's worst weapon turned a live human being into a dead barbie doll.
I wouldn't say 'villain'...
We've been hearing the drums since the first season in the 1960s. Only hint.
Thank you, Emme! ⏳
david tennent is my fav doctor
HERE COME THE DRUMS
This version of the Master was just too over the top for me.
The sky’s are made of diamonds
The reason the Master turns the Doctor old-er is because in the last episode the Doctor saw the Master old and dying and the Master felt embarrassed to be seen like that by the Doctor, so in this episode he humiliates the Doctor by ageing him.
He even says "if the Doctor can be young and strong then so can I" in the previous episode
Good catch.
I must commend the timing on the episode…considering the election
The masters like the joker to the docters batman he doesnt want to kill the docter he wasnts to change him their old friends and the master still sees himself as the docters best friend but the master sees humans as below timelords so he allways acting out to try prove humans are not worth loving to the docter also he loves mind control
I like your hair color Emme, its nice
Another doctor who upload already? nice
Cross fingers is a universal sign for im lying the wife is giving a hint to anyone who can stop them that this is a trap
The first time he met Martha (but the second time she met him), the Doctor told her he didn't have a brother "anymore."
The Doctor meant Irving Braxitiel
Utopia is the best episode of this finale 3-parter, imo, but this one isn't too bad - until the last 5-10 minutes, anyway.
I think this story would have been far better if they'd just stuck to having it be The Doctor, Martha and Jack being hunted by every resource the Prime Minister has at his disposal, with them needing to find a way to bring down The Master in the process.
Instead it all gets a bit silly. And then, in the finale, completely stupid. Not a fan.
Funny how this is being released on election day!!
15:25
I don’t think he is being honest. I think the Doctor was the first group he mentioned, those who were inspired. He saw all of time and space so was never going to be content with a life on Galifrey - he saw all of time through the schism, and knew he had to experience it firsthand.
I think the Rani is who was inspired.
Would be nice to go to gallifrey once more :)
Teletubbies were way after my time, so I never actually watched them. I come from the 1960s and 1970s television generation.
2:29 KITTY 🐱!!!!
Brilliant thanks
You face is priceless when you are reacting. Some many deep dive spoilerist comments 😊
If the doctor is ying the master is yang if the doctor is good the master is evil, give me the Daleks and the cyber men over the master any day
For any viewers who might be anxious about the outcome of today's election... Just remember, whoever wins, it won't be as bad as this.
It's ironic that this gets posted on the US Election Day.
Oh I don't know there is a even more on the nose story that could have been put on a US election day.
The sound of drums is just a silly retcon.
❤
Unit isnt actualy ameeican its the uns anti alien group the docter works for them in older clasic who episodes so unit knows about time lords and aliens they just nit aloud to go public with ot

The ONLY reason I am making this comment is because I know you are ahead 4 weeks on Patreon....... 19:10 hahahahahaha!!!!!
The Master being the Doctor's brother was going to be a real thing at one point but the actor that played the first master died in a car accident and the story was abandoned
young?
Doctor has fought the Master since the 2nd Doctor era. They have used different actors to play the The Master but you can always recognize The Master no matter who is playing the character. Master is like the Ying and Yang to the Doctor. The only other Time Lords I know from the Classic era is Romana. She was a companion of the 4th Doctor. He was training her as an apprentice and I think he had some romantic interest for her since they were both Time lords. Eventually she did leave him to be on her own. He left her one of his K9 Models to help her.
The original idea was what Moriaty was to Sherlock Holmes.
Romana was his superior.
I feel like of anyone implied to Romana's face that she could have had a crush on The Doctor, she'd throw up in her mouth a little.
Also The Master was first introduced during the Third Doctor's Era.
