Telehandler bucket, New wear edge and crack repairs

- In this video I weld on a new wear edge and repair cracks on a telehandler bucket.
I start by cutting the old wear edge off, this is done by cutting down the back of the weld with the plasma cutter, plasma gouging the end welds off and also the welds on the underside.
The straps on the underside of the bucket floor had worn through so I decided to cut them off and replace them as well.
Due to the bucket having a hard life, the floor was quite bent. I used a porta pack hydraulic ram to push the floor back out so the edge and straps could be tacked back on without having too much of a bow in them. The pry bar was also needed to help tweak the floor back to the straps.
Once they were tacked on, I cnc plasma cut some strips out and then pressed them to shape with the press brake, these were tacked over the bottle corner where the floor had cracked/worn thin.
The edge and straps were stitch welded on as they were originally and the extra plates where fully welded on.
That was the bottom side complete so the bucket was turned back the right way up.
More cracks on the inside of the bucket needed attention. I gouged them out the best I could and rewelded them. I cut out another 2 sets of plates, the base plate to cover the bad area and then a cover plate to help add strength back in. The first set of cracks were also rewelded from the top so the weld would penetrate through to the plates underneath.
Because of all the weld, it had pulled the floor up and coursed the edge to bow up. To solve this, I put the hydraulic ram back in, put some force on the opposite way and then continued to weld the rest of the edge on. Once cooled the pressure was realized the edge was nice and straight.
Last job was to spray a bit of red oxide over the new bits.

I felt your frustration when the wire feed for your mig jammed - there's few things more annoying, and for me it generally happens when I've crawled into a confined space and left the pliers on the bench! Nice repair as usual Oliver, I very much enjoy the way you present your videos, keep 'em coming!
It always amazes me the amount of times I've seen buckets worn through on that back edge and still the manufacturers have them like that. Our local blacksmith used to put a thick heavy bar (quite often the edge removed from the front) across the back edge as a wear plate. We've all used the back edge of the bucket for leveling a heap of sand or soil.
When I make a bucket from scratch I weld a square of bucket edge on the 2 back corners.
Always a trade off against weight and cost. To be fair that back edge ware is down to a bad operator. I used to work in a factory and we had loads of thin heals on forklift tines again down to operators running about with then rubbing on the floor.

Yeah but manufacturers don't want the bucket to last forever as they want you to buy a new one in the future.
IT'S the way I did our Bobcat bucket years ago, Put it at a snowplow cutting edge at 30 degree angle and called it a "BACKDRAGGON" = Should have patented and trademarked it. Well too late to worry now,

If you go to age concern shops or any charity shops you can pick up jackets very cheap .Bin them as quickly as they wear out and it will still be a cheap way of keeping warm .Another great video by the way.

Can't tell you how refreshing it is to have a welding video where a guy uses a plaz instead of a death wheel but I think my first choice for gauging would have been carbon arc.

Great job on the bucket, those hydraulic power packs come in handy for lots of jobs, after a while you will wonder how you managed without one. You can improve the downdraught on the table by covering up the unused open space with some thin plate you might have lying around or anything really that's not inflammable to sparks even thin plywood, by using smaller pieces your work area becomes adjustable and that way the fan you have will only be sucking from the open cutting area.
Yes, that would help. When I’m cutting a full sheet nearly all of the smoke gets sucked out. The down draft table is sectioned so it only sucks out the area it’s cutting which helps
Yup. The "before and after" using them is like night and day. And i was reticent in getting one the first time, because i was using a variety of screw jacks and splitters (the oldie wood splitter wedge with a screw in the center). Hydraulic is so much better.

Another great video Oliver and once again your work ethics and constant concern for your customers goes the extra mile. As for your coat I see nothing wrong with it, made a bit tattered on the fluorescent stripe but if if does what it needs to such as keep you warm and protected then where it with pride it's worked hard as you.

That bucket sure was a mess when it came in. But you did a great job of fixing it, so the owner should get a lot more use out of it before it comes back later to have the floor replaced.

Nice work. As for a work coat, I wore a sweat shirt under a hooded sweat shirt with the ubiquitous standard green welding jacket over them. Good down to about 15°F after that I would add long underwear to the mix. Worked outside down to -10°F with that. The welding jacket needs to be one or two sizes larger then you would normally wear.
Looks like its being used with a brush attachment , would explain why the bottom is worn away . Top work as always Oliver

My 22 year old Carhart jacket is still wearing just great. The make good stuff. Or they did 20 plus years ago, lol. I have that same porta power. I have had it for close to 30 years now. It ha served me well. I think you will love that thing. I have straightened car and truck frames, levels ceiling and floor beams and much more with the thing. It owes me nothing at this point. My boy will get plenty of use out of it after I am gone! lol
