It's National Tree Week 2023 - Do trees really help with the fight against climate change?

  • National Tree Week 2023 runs from 25 November to 5 December and is the UK’s largest annual tree celebration. The nationwide event encourages people across the country to plant thousands of new trees to mark the start of tree planting season. But why is it so important to plant trees?
Recently I met up with Simon and Tracey West who run the charity Word Forest, an environmental and education charity based in the UK that works to combat the devastating effects of global warming and climate change by planting fast growing trees in the tropics. They explained to me the role of trees in the fight against climate change.
Word Forest "was formed in April 2017 with the knowledge that the wellbeing of the planet and the wellbeing of the tree planting communities were intrinsically linked. The charity objects being to promote sustainable development with the preservation, conservation and the protection of the environment and the prudent use of resources. To also include the relief of poverty and the improvement of the conditions of life in socially and economically disadvantaged communities".
Find out more about Word Forest here at their website

"Trees are the ultimate carbon capture and storage machines. Like great carbon sinks, woods and forests absorb atmospheric carbon and lock it up for centuries". (The Woodland Trust)

Trees are an amazing organism and are under utilized in landscaping.

They are very under-utilised, I couldn't agree more. They should be central to any new community design, urban and rural.

I learned to love the woods and the trees in my youth in Finland. Till today I take regular walks on the woods and I even hug a tree now and then. Trees are our future so thank you so much to this reminder Nicola! My pine is looking beautiful under the snow coat now. Have a wonderful weekend!

Like the lady from Finland, I (Ian) fell in love with the bush in Central Africa during my formative years. The value of trees can never be understated as reaffirmed by the Wests. Trees give so much to humankind yet the majority of humans continue to persist with their destruction without thought for others.

So true and camping in the Kenyan bush is magical too - the sounds of the creatures and the bush babies. It is enchanting and it always motivates us to do more, to work harder to preserve this vital resource.

    Hi Nicola
The well reported deforestation of the Amazon and others in the world, sadly far outweighs the planting projects that Tracey and Simon promote and drive.
Development, be it homes or infrastructure in the UK takes priority over trees and nature, population growth means more houses and roads, replacing trees cut down never seems to be on a one for one basis.
Retaining green spaces is a battle we face on my Parish Council, we have little power compared to Local & County Council levels, but we make our views and objections known in representing our area. Where I live we maintain a woodland walk ......maintaining and creating new green spaces is a priority, & we have a neighbourhood plan including this that is about to be approved.
100's of trees have been recently cut down for a revised section of A road near Norwich, local side roads flooded because the tree roots were now dead and nothing left to drink the rain water.
I am not convinced by any 'doing good' narrative about ULEZ. It's a cash grab, as you can happily 'pollute for £12.50 a day, and the polluted air theory has been debunked as false by independent surveys using identical testing equipment to the one tfl employed, then self edited and published what they wanted people to read.
The pollution and health risks from the air on London Underground are far far worse, yet the sorry excuse for a mayor won't admit it and does nothing about it.
I'f we all lived in a peaceful Utopian society, there will always be someone chopping down trees and destroying forests, and I bet Greta Thunberg throws a log or two on her wood burning stove after a few round the globe flights in her private jet ......it's reality sadly.
    Stay Safe as Always ✨☯🧡☮🙏🕊

The vegan argument is spurious but trees are important and the regrowth of forests and woodlands can reverse warming. It has done it before. Such as in the cooling following the plague in Europe. Unfortunately people planting will be insufficient. The most important aspect is to allow the regrowth to happen and remain.

I just looked up the accounts and not a penny from the Goverment in supporting a good charity like this. In saying this about Global Warming this is another point really look up Tony Heller regarding Global Warming, I agree that trees are a vital part of mother nature and trees remove around10 and 40kg of CO2 per year on average. I remember back in the 70's it was all about global freezing seems every decade they come up with something.

      @wordforestorg 9 месяцев назад

Hi there Alan - thanks for diving into our Report and Accounts, we're proud of all we've managed to fundraise to reforest Kenya. Sadly, there don't seem to be any forward thinking, green hearted governments ready to do what needs to be done: the UK's is case in point. But it will continue to fuel our mission to get the job done, regardless.

Darling, we don't have "climate change man-made-global-warming". It's impossible for us to take over the climate and change it. Only God has that power. Our
planet is the most perfect in it's creation. And, yes, I love trees, I have many on my property that I started from seeds and they are thriving and 25 feet tall. I'm
growing 7 Sycamores from seeds I found. Now, those I can control and help thrive. Have a blessed day.

Here in Australia, we have the tallest flowering trees in the world - the magnificent Eucalyptus Regnans. One specimen discovered here in the 19th century was so incredibly tall, guess what they did? Yes, they chopped it down so they could measure it properly!
Tragic, but true. In Oz, where the men are tough macho types, these blokes love chopping down our beautiful trees - I think it's a machismo thing - they feel threatened by the enormity of the majestic trees, and want to show them who's boss. Every weekend, I hear the chilling whirr of the chainsaws - and it's like a knife in my heart. The housing developers are bulldozing a lot of lovely old houses to build blocks of flats - building right up to the fence line, with no room for trees or even a little lawn. Every inch of land means money to these destructive, greedy fools. I am so enraged by this, that I am currently getting a petition up, to persuade our local council that every tree chopped down by developers must be replaced by a sapling at the front of the building - or on the adjacent nature strip. It is the only way to protect our future. We must all be defiant defenders of trees! Your interview with these fine people is TREEmendously important, Nicola!

I can completely understand why efforts are being made to reforest Rwanda too@@charlesperez9976 it's that brilliant proximity to the equator that makes trees grow so super-fast. One of our largest projects is just 3 degrees south of the equator and trees there are just amazing.

Trees are very important to me,I care for Bonsai,I have one that is now over 50 years old!
I want some of my ashes placed at the nebari(sorry, bonsai term for the poetic beauty of roots meeting the ground) of the Sycamore gap tree.
      I still wish that,but now it’s a stump.
There is still hope for that tree,it may send up shoots,it suffers the gaping wound that is the stump,so it is fighting serious odds for its survival.
Trees are such an easy thing to take for granted.
For every breath we take, they breathe back.
      ❤️
