We hear "close your eyes honey" from the end of HL2 Episode 2, and there are several sequences in HL2 where Gordon is separated from Alyx. It's very possible the game will start before HL2 and go through the events of HL2 and episodes 1 and 2, but from Alyx's perspective.
I think that's okay, they literally made this (a brand new game), so i think it means they want to remain the story intact for a third game perhaps?... Let me dream

I've build a massive pc to be able to play virtually every game on 1440p and still Valve manages to release a long anticipated pc game that is unplayable on my system because I won't own a VR-set in the nearby future...

At this time, I'm really happy seeing at least a HL spin-off rather than nothing
It's actually a really good jumping off point. Half-Life has been absent for over a decade and just dropping Half-Life 3 out of nowhere would be really unwise of them when they haven't had a serious release in fucking ages. This game is kind of an obligation for them, because they have spent so much on pushing VR. This will probably lead to a snowball effect of Valve actually getting projects out the door, hopefully including Half-Life 3.

get a Best Buy card and use it to get an Oculus Rift S. It's around $500, which is the cheapest you're going to get, but each lens is 1080p, and it runs off your computer. Part of the "not being $1000" part is that it doesn't require those tripod cameras all over the room.

Basically they just want to teach the gaming industry how gaming works again like they did with 1 and 2. It would not surprise me if they have been working on this in silence for the last 8-10 years. They experimented with controllers, consoles, Source 2, Steam OS, Steam VR, headsets etc. It was all probably just behind the scenes work on this.

I don't think so. This is one of the 3 games that Valve has worked on to make VR-bait. Since currently, only about 1% of Steam users have VR and they just want to sell more of it. That's their only motivation for this.

Me too.
Samsung Odyssey has better image quality, but worse controllers and worse tracking. It´s perfect for simulation games, but not that good for all other genres like shooters, RPGs etc.
And you can´t play all games with WMR headsets. It´s always up to the game devs if they decide to support WMR or not. Vive, Rift, Index is ALWAYS supported, because most people use it.
I don´t want to say that the Odyssey is bad. But Oculus headsets are just way more polished and allround talents for a low price.

Sony already brought decent VR gaming to the masses with PS VR, this will hopefully push it to new levels, but this will no doubt cost a fortune.
@@DangerVille Valve's hardware already costs more than the Oculus Rift and HTC did at launch. They're enticing their fans to buy the index since if you own their VR set, you get the game for free.
@@ItsAnH I for one hope this game marks the start of an era, where VR should be purchaseable by everyone. Like we saw with home game consoles or even GPU's, to name some things. I doubt it will be cheap on launch, but hopefully we'll see a drop in production cost in 2021 or 2022

No it’s not happening. This is not continuing where episode 2 left off and you have to spend hundreds of dollars on a headset to play the fucking thing.
TheBic4 at least we are heading to the right directions, and I’m sure majority would want vr to be developed... instead of left behind this precious technology
@@TheBic4 Valve has been focusing on VR for years now, we all knew the next Half Life was going to be a VR title. Plus, I don't think buying a VR headset is any different than buying a better ram/graphics card to play 2019 games. Gaming is not cheap unless you want to play old games.
While it's true this doesn't continue where episode 2 left off, consider this: the main Half Life games were based on innovation. HL1 was a technical masterpiece and HL2 managed to feature never-seen before reflections and physics. Both things had something in common: they would eventually end up becoming the norm. As in, you would eventually have to get a PC that could run all of those things if you wanted to play any game that would end up being released later. Whenever Valve didn't want to innovate, they would instead release "expansions" so to speak (Blue Shift, Opposing Force, Ep1 and Ep2). I understand Valve wants to make sure VR is here to stay before they make a true continuation to Half Life (or any of their other sagas such as Portal or even L4D).
You know what? While this is not perfect, the fact they officially acknowledged Half Life after more than ten years is just amazing and I'm pretty sure this is only the beginning of a new Valve era. Even if they don't make any more games after this, we got a brand new and improved engine for modding and shit which is still pretty sweet so yeah I'm not complaining.
I see this is as an absolute win.

It has been been a long time. And while this isn’t quite what we wanted, it’s something damnit.
I'm actually really excited for this. Valve has always used the Half Life series to innovate. The first game was used to test out innovative story telling techniques in a video game, the second game was used to test out innovative physics engines, and now the third game is looking to innovate with VR and actually make a full AAA game for the system. I can't wait to see what Valve does with this
I'm grateful that Valve hasn't forgotten about Half Life at least
