The Philippines is the most expensive country to live in....in SouthEast Asia yet it is one of the poorest countries in that area. The reason why rent and housing is so expensive in the Philippines is because of OFW's (Overseas Filipino Workers) returning and retiring back to the Philippines after years of working overseas in countries like America, Canada, Europe, and the especially the Middle East. Because employment is difficult to find in their own country, Filipinos have traditionally had to leave their country to find work. And because they can speak English very well they are chosen for jobs over other people from that region.
If you ever go on a cruise in the Caribbean or Mediterrean....you will notice 75% of the crew are Filipinos. Their ability to speak English well and their friendliness makes them a prime candidate in the service industry overseas. Now after many years and ready to retire, many of these OFW's are returning back to the Philippines and buying up houses to live in or to rent out...driving up housing prices at a ridiculous rate. Many OFW's still working abroad are also able to get long-term mortgages because of their status.....a luxury that is not easily obtained when living in the Philippines because of the unstable job market. And on top of that, you have South Koreans buying condos in droves in the Philippines and driving up condo prices. Fortunately it is still relatively cheap to build your own home in the Philippines but that luxury is only available to Filipino citizens.

$1,120 for wifi that might flip out? Booting up definitely means unplugging from luxury back home but wow. Makes you value the solid connections, huh?

If you dont like Manila, stay in Cebu, Davao, Batangas, La Union, Boracay, Dumaguete and Iloilo. Siargao is away from Civilization and Typhoon prone that's why it is not advisable to stay there for long term. Siargao is good for 3-5 days but for long term nope. That's why old expats are lesser there because it's never comfortable. Air bnb also not working much and offers expensive stays so better go for agoda. Seems like you have difficulty finding cheaper places of good standard. Do agoda or Kayak as they offer discounted prices of these hotels. Will cost you as low as 13 to 60 dollars better hotels per night. Including amenities. Many hotels are also using Starlink so when you book your stay ask what type of internet service they are using. But pldt is working well in Cebu. Siargao is shockingly low, like 14 mbps - it's really low.
