I've been modding gbas for a long time and I'm always excited to see a new gba mod video. Even better when it's from you 👍🏻 Hope whatever is ailing you goes away soon. You seem to clear your throat a lot in this one.
Definitely want to do one of these with a spare I have (I like to keep my childhood systems mostly stock outside of recaps and non-intrusive mods.) so I can have a go to GBA since my SP is definitely showing its age.
I wish I had kept my first GBA because I do remember the shape of it and the buttons being more comfortable than the SP. The SP is more than fine but it would have been nice if Nintendo had released a backlit original GBA model. Also I really enjoy watching these Fix It Friday videos. Nice work!
My parents have been cleaning out their closets this week and I ended up finding my brother's original Game Boy Advance in some stuff they asked me to go through, so I'm no longer without one! I might consider having some of these mods done to it, because I forgot just how rough it was to play with no backlight. The audio is definitely worse than I remember, too.
What a beauty of a mod for this GBA console, I really love your videos every Friday, you're a real crack, soon I'll be back in the USA 🇺🇸 to send you my snes jr so you can install the RGB mod including S-Video, and the complete change of capacitors and voltage regulator.
@@LIRetroGaming The console that I will send you will be a SFC Jr, I will need a complete change of capacitors, Change Voltage Regulator, complete RGB Mod with the S-Video option enabled, and the red power light, I will return to the USA again soon 🇺🇸 and I will write you by msg from email.
Ok, i'm gonna save this video in my modding list, i gotta do all this to my gba!! I'm currently playing Bomtai 2, so i think the touch oads option for the brightness control will work better for me, since Boktai 2 uses the Select+L/R combination for weapon and magic selection in game, just like Metal Gear Solid (same creator Kojima)
I love the form factor of the original GBA. All of these mods are awesome. But personally don't like the look of the IPS screen, not that it is bad, it's just that I like the original one the most. I wish I could "harvest" the original screen from my 101 and make the perfect GBA. Or maybe somebody could come up with an horizontal shell for SP internals. That way everything can go back to stock if I wanted to. Great work as always, keep the projects coming!
It’s totally possible to install a 101 screen on the original GBA, and this was the popular screen mod option until IPS screens came along a few years ago
@@otto2853 yes, they both are backlighted but they have different resolutions and refresh rates. It’s kind of a nitpick but relevant if you’re into the Gba.
I know this isn't a popular opinion, but my fav handheld console for years was my trusty GBA Micro! (The screen might be tiny, but it is so bright and crisp, plus I have small hands.) These days though, I love my Retroid Pocket 2+.
It looks very nice overall! I would say I find the changes around the screen in the bezel to be a bit distracting, but I imagine it would not be as noticeable after using it for a while. 👍🏻
VERY COOL. Do they make the battery replacement cover in ice blue like the original shell? I just bought one at a convention I'd love to do these mods on but I really want to keep the original ice blue shell.
1:58 I wonder if there are new games being developed for the Brick GB. I still have mine, but it is in need of repair. Hopefully I will start working again soon.
I've been wanting to put in one of those amp mods, but I had enough trouble with trying to put one of Helder's kits for the power (damn thing just wouldn't stay put or soldered on), I just gave up on it for the time being
Thanks for the video, everything is very well explain and demonstrated in a way that's easy to understand. Btw will the mods work with a EZ Flash Omega definitive edition? if so what is the battery life like? Thanks
Built a GBC and 2 GBAs so far, I have stopped using HHL because their customer service is terrible. Nice selection of products, but there are plenty of other places to shop.
I just finished doing all this but only the dehum/dehiss mod left, the piece is getting delayed 😠 other than that, i rather the touch pads, because i'm playing Boktai 2 and thad game uses the Select+L/R combination to choose weapon/magic, so, it would be changing color palet and brightness in as undesirable way.
That’s a lot for shipping:( I have to look and see if there is a similar type of store that’s located in Europe. Fortunately most parts for mods can be found there as well
Try yahoo Japan- You can get them there for half the price when compared to an American listing. There are no regions for GBA, so all American games will work on a Japanese system
A modded GBA in my opinion is the best way to play GBA games even though I love the SP models they are extremely uncomfortable for people with normal to large sized hands back when they came out I didn’t have this issue because I was a kid but now my thumb alone covers half of the controls 🥲
One of my favorite modders. Thanks for sharing. Look forward to fix it fridays.
Thanks so much! I’ll try to keep these videos coming!
Love Handheld Legends! Good parts and customer service! Glad you teamed up with them.
Yeah those guys are awesome! I have been purchasing stuff from them for a long time

Thanks so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I did catch some small cold, but thankfully it’s almost gone now!
Definitely going to do these mods to my GBA ,Thanks for the video i really enjoyed it !! Also love the Retro classic look
I live for your content every Friday! Thanks so much for all your hard work!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate the feedback and I’m glad you enjoy it!
Awesome job! Looks great and now I want a Gameboy advance again, these mods looked doable for me
Yes, these modifications are not too bad. It’s a good choice for beginners to get started
Final product looks amazing, well done.
Years of working with a pawn shop I now have ideas for many of the broken units to fix and enjoy and pass on greate videos keep it up
Nice! Glad that you enjoyed the video and hopefully these ideas help you out!
Awesome mod, I love my George Portugal special. Also picked up some stuff from HHL recently. Great place!
Looks amazing dude! Keep up the great work 😁
Thanks Brian!
Definitely want to do one of these with a spare I have (I like to keep my childhood systems mostly stock outside of recaps and non-intrusive mods.) so I can have a go to GBA since my SP is definitely showing its age.
Totally makes sense. I have kept my childhood systems original and I have extra consoles modded like this one!
I wish I had kept my first GBA because I do remember the shape of it and the buttons being more comfortable than the SP. The SP is more than fine but it would have been nice if Nintendo had released a backlit original GBA model.
Also I really enjoy watching these Fix It Friday videos. Nice work!
Thanks a lot, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I still have my SP and I do enjoy it, but my hands do get cramps after extended play time

This was really freaking cool, what a difference!
Thanks! Yes it certainly is a big difference
That’s awesome 👏🏽 that’s all I’ve ever wanted on my gba
Great video! 👍
so happy that fix it friday is back. Love them.
Thanks so much, I do appreciate it! It can be hard for me to film videos when I’m traveling a lot for work, but I do my best to make it happen!
@@LIRetroGaming We all love the effort. Keep up the good work my friend.

That is one sharp and nice as hell handheld. Wow.

Great mods! I've done all that to mine, minus the speaker upgrade. I need to do that next
Awesome! It certainly is transformative once it’s all done
You are breathtaking!!!
Looks great
Fantastic!
Man, gba modding has come a long way in a few short years. Last time I did an ips and battery upgrade there was a ton of trimming and fitting to do
Yeah a lot has changed! There are lots of options and installations have gotten easier
I love the form factor of the original GBA. All of these mods are awesome. But personally don't like the look of the IPS screen, not that it is bad, it's just that I like the original one the most. How are the looks different? Both have backlight don't they?
@@otto2853 yes, they both are backlighted but they have different resolutions and refresh rates. It’s kind of a nitpick but relevant if you’re into the Gba.

I also have a soft spot for the micro! It’s a very cool system to own
I did all of these same mods to mine same color except I have black buttons, added an everdrive and my console is awesome.
I like that, and I’ll probably get some different colored buttons at some point
I'm trying this for my og GBA!!
Awesome, I hope that the video is helpful!
Funnyplaying has a DMG themed button set for GBA that would top this off!
LIRG, your throat ok boss? Should have played DJ Kool's 'Let Me Clear My Throat' song in the vid, lmao!
Yeah I was getting over a cold unfortunately
It looks very nice overall! I would say I find the changes around the screen in the bezel to be a bit distracting, but I imagine it would not be as noticeable after using it for a while. 👍🏻
Love the video and the GBA looks amazing!!! Quick question, how much was the total cost for the entire thing?
Not sure exactly, but I think about 150 for all the parts
VERY COOL. Do they make the battery replacement cover in ice blue like the original shell? I just bought one at a convention I'd love to do these mods on but I really want to keep the original ice blue shell.
Yeah they do make battery covers that match the original shells
1:58 I wonder if there are new games being developed for the Brick GB. I still have mine, but it is in need of repair. Hopefully I will start working again soon.
Yes, there are definitely new games being made for the original Game Boy! Hopefully you can get yours working soon!
I've been wanting to put in one of those amp mods, but I had enough trouble with trying to put one of Helder's kits for the power (damn thing just wouldn't stay put or soldered on), I just gave up on it for the time being
It sounds like you might not have a good temperature controlled iron. The soldering on the GBA can be tricky because it’s quite small as well
Thanks for the video, everything is very well explain and demonstrated in a way that's easy to understand.
Btw will the mods work with a EZ Flash Omega definitive edition? if so what is the battery life like?
Thanks
It should work with the ez flash. Battery life is about 10 hours
Awesome
very cool.
9:49 smart!
Can you recommend a soldering temp and ideal hakko soldering tip for this?
I use a Hakko chisel tip and the temp is set to 750 Fahrenheit
It's nice but you're missing the crimson A & B buttons.
Yeah I plan to get those in the future
The link for the screen in the description is not working. Do you know where else I could get the display? Thanks.
Search on handheld legend. They still have them they must have just changed the URL
Built a GBC and 2 GBAs so far, I have stopped using HHL because their customer service is terrible. Nice selection of products, but there are plenty of other places to shop.

Glad that you got it all set up!
Why does everyone use the CleanAmp Pro v1.0 when they released a v1.2? Is it better in any way?
I was unaware of the 1.2 - need to check it out
It's not fully modded yet. My GBA has clicker shoulder buttons.
That’s fair, that is a nice thing to add as well
Can you build a large screen gba mod using consolizer kit?
Yes, that is possible and I have made a video about it before
Would you ever be willing to detail your Japanese auction methods?
Do you have a code or something with handheld legend? I'm planning on placing an order now that's I've watched this video!
We do! www.handheldlegend.com/longislandretrogaming
@@LIRetroGaming Thanks! Just ordered with them! My GBA is going to be SO AWESOME
nice
Looks like it's time for me to fix up my GBA with screen burn!
That gba is going to fall prey to cyber psychosys 😅
Hello again, i just got the piece, installed it and... i really don't notice any difference to be honest 🤷🏻♂️ the dehum dehiss mod i mean.
It might be more noticeable with headphones, I’m not sure
Could yo do a GBA SP mod with bluetooth and usb-c port?
Definitely, it’s something that I want to do for a future video
when are people guna move to ds or 3ds reshellings and mods😥as much as gba
I think there is less for those systems because they are much harder to take apart. By comparison GBA is very easy
How much will it coste to get 1 built for me
You can contact me at 1uprestorations.com
How much would it cost all the components?
I think about $150 total
GBA 백라이트 버젼 너무좋다
you mean modding, since it was already build.
Cool, or just get rechargeable batteries?
Sure, that also works
@@LIRetroGaming indeed the mod screen looks outstanding ! You ever gba everdrive to play ps1 tomb raider open Lara project rom?
unfortunately, shipping to germany from handheldlegend costs over 70€ :(
That’s a lot for shipping:( I have to look and see if there is a similar type of store that’s located in Europe. Fortunately most parts for mods can be found there as well
What game is that
Metroid zero mission
I wish GBAs themselves didn't cost a fortune right now, I don't have one anymore.
Try yahoo Japan- You can get them there for half the price when compared to an American listing. There are no regions for GBA, so all American games will work on a Japanese system
@@LIRetroGaming didn't know the advance wasn't region locked, huh!
I just bought a modded one for 40 quid, clear black case, white buttons and clear screen mod, it's very nice, my flash card is coming tomorrow for it
I wish they'd made the GBA a little less fugly
I don’t know, I like the design of it
This has GBA internals? I would've used a GBA screen protector instead of the NGB screen protector.
Otherwise, great job
Yes, the internal hardware is an original GBA. At least there are lots of different options for replacing the shell these days!
1000
you dream of GBAs? -_-
handheld legend is a joke. their shipping department is absolute garbage. Ive had horrible experiences with them.
Sorry to hear that. I have never had an issue with them
@@LIRetroGaming Me neither. Ordered tons and never had a prob
I had same experience. The usb-c battery kit exploded after 1 minute of charging. Luckily my gba is still working. Now back to AA batteries again...
it's a shame you used all retrosix products. That company is terrible.
Hey for what it’s worth you can get this stuff plenty of other places as well
My gba is using parts from them, it's fine, the clear screen is amazing, the new shell is high quality
A modded GBA in my opinion is the best way to play GBA games even though I love the SP models they are extremely uncomfortable for people with normal to large sized hands back when they came out I didn’t have this issue because I was a kid but now my thumb alone covers half of the controls 🥲
I agree that the gba is the most comfortable version to use. My hands can cramp if I use an SP for too long
