  • MIT is a world renowned research institution.
    Yet, the 3,800 grad students who make it so are barely scraping by.
    Now they’ve unionized. We spoke to members of the MIT Graduate Students Union about their recently victorious campaign.

    Grad students pretty much everywhere are exploited for their labour and paid a barely livable wage, the workers have to rise up.

    • @37Dionysos
      @37Dionysos 2 года назад

      But it isn't a livable wage---in most Adjunct cases, when you really do the math of teaching and living, it's LESS than minimum wage. They want the best teachers who can't do math.

    Not to rain on your parade at all - congratulations MIT Grad Students! - but, realize the work has only just begun. If you want to keep your Union, strengthen your Union, and be able to use your Union to help benefit the broader working class, you’ve got a long and probably unforgiving road ahead of you. In the imperialist core - the center of world capitalism - these wins are often fleeting, as they are quickly targeted for “regime change”. It will take strength, unity, and serious political education of your members to be successful in the longterm.
    But, I know you know this, and I know you can do it! Stay strong and stay in the fight!

      I think your concern is valid. IMO workers care the most about the benefits. I doubt the union workers spend time trying to guard the union from infiltration or educating themselves on how to make a union more effective for the common people. These workers are already over worked. I wish them the best of luck but hope porn is killing what is left of the movement. Every comfortable person thinks things will get better so they don't have to make them better. We need to focus on helping people that deserve attention. Not everyone deserves our time and resources. Some people willing serve the oligarchy.

      You could have watch the video or read what you wrote and realized wow this is nonsense maybe I shouldn’t embarrass myself.
      Here’s a summary for you. Graduate students produce and MIT publishes it makes a massive amount of money off of while paying the graduate students early enough to live while attending the University. MIT will sell research to private companies and make bank. It has nothing to do with the very little money in some total that the institution receives from the government. And on the subject of using taxpayer money to pay for research that’s how technological innovation and development has worked predominantly in the past few hundred years. Private sector will take technology produced by the public funded research and make things with it while also putting a little bit into their own R&D R&D that is mostly looking at what publicly funded research has developed.

    • @KnowerofThings
      @KnowerofThings 2 года назад

      @@sojourner4726 all im saying is no one is forcing them to work there. All these students saying they get very little pay but they dont give you the exact amount I doubt they make less than people at starbucks who graduated from universities. These students are getting the benefit of working in the field they studied in and in return for a lower wage compare to market. Once they have enough knowledge they can seek out another job in the field.

      Yes and they are putting in 50 hours, have to teach twerps.... They need to be able to set schedules so that they can effectivly teach and do research... They need time off as well.
      It is frustrating to be in a lab with a grad student who's attention is divided when you are tying to do something creative.
