Excellent reuse of this OPU technology. The small precise optical elements and the small compactness of the unit definitely allows the use of a possibly portable spectroscopic in field analysis of small microscopic events. I thought before about using parts off the dvd drives for similar applications but unfortunately life gets in the way of progress. There is definitely possibilities of refinements and further applications. Excellent video and presentation! Bravo!

Awesome finding this! I was looking for a beam splitter from a Blueray to use for an interferometer for very wideband spectrum analysis and reading what's been used before. Found this research paper and video at the top of the Google search list. Excellent work! I haven't read the paper yet... though downloaded to read later. I assume there is open source software and more detailed plans from briefly watching the video. I comment again if I don't find. Looks like some really excellent work and again, thank you for sharing!
I guess while I'm commenting... any suggestions regarding optical materials that are cost effective like first surface mirror, beam splitter, etc.? I was wondering about the dental mirrors as they came up as most cost effective on eBay in my first search (2nd search of first surface mirrors was some more cost effective options) and I have a few of the dental mirrors around from over the years from kits I wanted the other tools from.
Wondering what can be done with DVD and CD players too?
I've thought about using a harddrive actuator for a diffraction grating control also so can use a more precise blueray disc with the finer lines to sweep for a IR-Vis-UV webcam spectrometer. I just need to somehow get my handlers to let me do some hands on work. Thanks again for your time, service and support!

I am trying to recreate it, however I still have doubts about the interface, more specifically how to pass analog signals to the program you use and more about the electronics and the program, what sofware do you use? what microcontroller do you use?
