    This was a great video. Nick, I just realized why your show clicks well with me. I'm ex-NOAA Corps and Scientist. We probably know some of the same people. I'll start checking out some of the other videos. One of the things that I've noticed that other channels do not have is how individuals can use the science of climatology and oceanography to make their exploration of the seas that much more enjoyable. After 20+ years on the ocean, there's just so much that could be said, shown and explained so that it's entertaining and educational. It's a thought. Anyway... good stuff.. I'm enjoying your content and perspective.

To plan their sailing and with a focus on the weather I learned after my first season with a small sailing boat in Sweden. • @richardacres6792

    Another great production Nick. This is exactly the type of content I have been looking for. It's a great mix of some technical stuff and the costs associated with it as well as a nice glimpse into the lifestyle. Jason Wynn and Nick on the Ruby Rose also do a pretty bang up job and they both wear shades so I wouldn't sweat it. So does Casey Neistat for that matter. I like seeing that things are not always perfect and how different people deal with a little adversity, so I hope you don't feel the need to make a travel channel. Thanks for the great content and I am happy to see both the view numbers and your sub count on the rise.

      Richard Acres thank you. That’s a tremendous compliment. Those two put out great content at a pace and quality I can’t imagine matching. I randomly met Nick Fabbri in a marina laundry room in Fajardo, PR many years ago. Who’d have thought? I’d like to document the travel as well as give insights into what we are doing to make all this happen. I’d like to do something similar to what steveo1kinevo does with flying. Bear with a little experimentation. Thanks for the props!

      @@TheOKellys From my own selfish perspective, the "what it took to get there" stuff is what has me hooked. We very much hope to be 5ish years behind you guys in splashing our own adventure. The next step for us will be sailing certs from a school such as Nautilus on the sea of Cortez. If anyone has any input I would gladly hear it. At any rate, thanks for the reply and we are looking forward to the next installment.

      Not familiar with Nautilus. They must be out of La Pas? That's a great area to explore and can be a challenge to deal with weather - really a fantastic place to learn. We love Mexico, especially the Pacific side and the Sea of Cortez is a gem. Glad to hear you've got a plan to make it happen. It really does take a lot to make this happen, and I think the trick is to enjoy (as much as possible) every step of the way. Thank's again for the comments. It is inspiring to us! Nick O

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  5 лет назад +1

      It’s a good boat. The L46 has become very hard to find. The new Leopards have quite a waiting list. You can find L48s and L44s though on the used market. I also have an affinity for the older ones...the 40, 43, and 47 which come and go depending on condition. All the Leopard designs stress livability and strong build without sacrificing performance....some more than others. I expect it will be one of the better value brands in the years to come.

    Thank You both for your sharing your genuine videos. You bought our dream boat and your conversions convinced us to see the advantages of a 4-cabin charter Leopard versus a private owners version besides the price tag... Could you do a video about living on a catamaran with a large dog, please? We have 2 11-year-old very tall Labradors (mini horses) and are delaying our dream for them. We would love to cruise with them but I have a genuine fear of hair getting everywhere.
    We really enjoy your videos.

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  5 лет назад +3

      Thanks Christine! We love having Sugar on board. She is 14 and it is hard to imagine life on board without her. A video about her life on board could be fun, though these days it is filled with a lot of sleep. I don't think big dogs on a boat are necessarily a deal killer. Depends on the particular dog I think, and where you want to cruise. We have good friends with a Great Dane on a 47ft Jenneau. It was actually Sugar who pushed us over into the catamaran search. We loved our last boat, a monohull, but she just couldn't move around with advancing age. If anything, she is too confident on the boat. She will head up to the trampoline to do her business while offshore, in the middle of the night. Anyway, thank you for the idea. We may do one on the paperwork hoops to jump through in the Caribbean. Hope we see you out here! Nick O

    I’ve often thought that workshop would be handy on a boat. However I see the sewing room would be just as important. Just as handy to make a few extra bucks as the mechanics. And of course general upkeep comfort of living.

    Hi! Could you do a segment on the work routine. Most people talk a little bit about making money while cruising, but nobody has done a good segment as to what does that look like. What are things you can do? How do you discipline yourself to work while having the playground all around you calling you to skip work =) ? What can you realistically expect to make? As I am doing my planning, I was thinking, I could just try to get a job locally in the country we are in to make a little money. Is that even feasible? Anything on this topic would be great!

    I would recommend a bread-maker:
    The ingredients (in the correct sequence) are put into the baking tin. Insert the baking tin into the maschine and start it..
    Some time later, a newly baked bread is ready to be eaten.

    That was a very good down to earth review of your boat. It seems to me a catamaran is just so much more "user-friendly" than a monohull. Of course, there are pros and cons and one con that I can think of with a cat is parking it. Just the fact their width requires more space. I hardly know anything about boats, but I like them and enjoy watching cruising videos. Thanks for the time and information.

    Hi Nick and Megan. Keep going ! Some ideas as you requested. Apols if this sounds demanding - it's definitely not. Tell us lots more about the boat, I would prefer if you didn't skip the technology bit. How are the engines and fuel consumption. I expect a charter boat to have mostly motored and not sailed. Definitely good if you can keep reflecting on the provenance of the boat, the work you did, any equipment failures etc. Electricity generation and consumption. Take us on a trip somewhere. Give us an idea about the handling, your level of expertise and sailing. How you find working remotely. How doing the channel impacts on your day to day. Privacy is always a concern but it may be nice to know where you are. Advice on motion sickness, the sorts of medical issues you deal with. Skin care in the intense sun. Monthly costs of cruising and your budget. When will you sell the boat. How your dog Sugar handles the heat. Fishing and fishing equipment. What you do when you go from A->B. Preparing, sailing, arrival, formalities, equipment checking and fixing, costs. Interested to know about the comms on board the boat. The impression so far is that you have made just about every sensible choice possible and have a rock solid platform. Have a great weekend ! Oh .. it's Friday by the way .... in the rest of planet earth ... you are probably not sure what day of the week it is .... ! Good luck ! p

We're well into the search for our next boat, and weighing pros/cons between a cat (my hubby's initial first choice) and a (perhaps ?) more blue water-worthy monohull (my gut tho I love the space on cats especially in warmer climates with friends & fam etc.). Pleas Do videos on sailing 101. For newbies who want to get into the sailing life; How to handle sails, winds,
    Navigating, plotting a course, planning a route. We are a young homeschooling family saving up to buy our first boat. Only sailed with friends so currently have no sea-worthy skills. May take a few courses in sailing as we get close to purchasing a boat.But for now we want to learn from others informally. We want to “winter” October -April on a cat, starting in Caribbean and each winter season migrate and explore a little different part of the world. Off seasons (summers) we want to park the boat and live at home (Moldova is home). Also do teaching videos on weather and how to read weather. Just stumbled across your channel(s). Love the tone, attention to details and production values, and the intelligent observations.
    I am struck, personally, by the amount of technology and systems you are committed to. Would love to hear your views on keeping it simple Vs necessity of some home comforts, how you have arrived at your choices on that balance, fears of becoming slaves to maintainance and breakages, etc

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  5 лет назад

      Dan Andersson thank you for the comment. Excellent topic for a video, right there. We have done it every which way. We started simple, bought a complex big comfortable 46ft monohull, downsized to a simple sailboat of 33 ft, and now this luxurious boat. I love simple little boats. We will own another one someday. This time around, we really wanted to be able to have our extended family aboard and thought we might want to make a go at chartering one day. The downside is that it is a ton of work to maintain her. The last boat, a Freedom33 cat-ketch was safe and easy to handle, even solo offshore. It was still work to maintain her, but I didn't worry nearly as much about every blemish. This boat is a significant portion of our net worth, and it takes a lot to keep her in shape. As in all of life, it is a set of tradeoffs. We've shared anchorages with 350' beasts with their own support ships, as well as the tiniest little ships without even an outboard for propulsion. We all got to the same place, and thats what matters at the end of the day. Best, Nick
