What a supersonic video. Rick, you are the master! Can you explain for us why a little warter on the top of a plant will cause further dehydration. I often do this if I see the bottom of the pot wet but the top half dry. Am I encouraging roots to climb up?

I am new to growing Orchids but you helped me bring a Miniature Phal back to life that was just about dead, all of the leaves were limp and falling over, but are now plump and green. Hi Rick, my orchids our in our home. I soak my phalaenopsis orchids once a week in my fertilizer. I don't give the amount that it says on the canister because I'm new to fertilizing them this year.
.....your better feeding lower amounts than they suggest........especially if its new to you......in nature they get tiny amounts often.....I feed the same way...sounds like your doing great.

Watching how you grow your orchids, it make me realize I'm a bit "protective" of my orchids. I live in Texas and thought our weather here is not the right condition for orchids. Now I'm ready to let them venture outside 👍🤓 🤗
Hi Rick 😉 ? I live in NJ and we have been getting some really Warm weather now. Unfortunately I am not able to have my Orchids outside due too not having a balcony or a place to put them outside. Anyway Had to turn on my air conditioner was just wondering if the AC will have any effect on them because once I turn on the AC I don’t turn it off till around the end of September depending. Would very much appreciate your thoughts about having the AC on them. I am feeding them very well with all the Right nutrients they need.

Our weather here finally warmed up for the last few days. Had most of my orchids out in the shade. Except a couple burns when we went camping. Been 106-108’ with humidex up here in Ontario Canada. I’m finding my mounts need at least a good early swim, then a foliage feed for everyone except my large catts, about mid afternoon. No rain for us so I’m doing what I can to keep things hydrated. I love my cal mag feed and a good seaweed extract as a weekly routine, along with my different fertilizer and a good flush along the way. Thanks for all you do Rick 💐

Hello Rick, just found your channel and subcribed, can you give me your recipe for you media mix? you may have addressed this in one of your other videos, if so my apologies , i will search your other videos for it. i have been growing in bark mix , but i want to try something like yours so i can adopt your feeding program, i live in southeastern Tn and have alot of heat this time of year also. thanks.
......welcome Clay......I use river rock, pea gravel, lava rock.....for almost all my orchids......the rest are mounted......Smaller rock in a pot...will stay moist longer than larger rock.......smaller airspace........the longer it stay damp.....larger the rock the faster it dries out........so for orchids that like more moisture....like Oncidiums.....I use smaller gravel...Orchids like Cattleya's.....that like a wet dry cycle more.....i use larger rock or stone....lava works the same way........bu its also porous and will absorb moisture like a clay pot will and give it off slowly.........that's how I match media to plants.....

I stuff a towel into the pot......so when I pop thru it doesn't get banged and broken......I use water as well...….and start with a 1/8" masonry bit to locate and start the holes.....
Your plants look better each time I see them! Your garden is thriving. Good for you. Appreciated the info on potassium. I might try that with my plants. We've been having hot days with high humidity down here in s. FL. I've been feeding calmag often. My cattleya seedlings that were ailing are starting to hydrate better and are sending up new shoots. I repotted them in small plastic pots with leca and have them in light shade with my bonsai. I thought they were going "under the hedge" as Roger says, but now they look like they are surviving. So Happy about this. And, I have finally figured out how to get phals to grow for me. All the videos I've watched and the research I've done have made a difference. I think I understand what type of care they need now. Hope you enjoy the 4th, your family and garden. Thanks for your videos and info sharing. It does make a difference.

I’ve followed the general info 1/4 of recommended feed quota for water culture orchids since I started but found that Ive been starving my orchids and although they’re fine quite a few have stuck. I’m already happy with my garden lime cal mag, and I’ve also started to fertilise at the recommended dose. I’ll see how they respond but my gut instinct tells me this is right, they’ll take what they want but can only do that if it’s available. Our temperature in the U.K. is high at the moment and water evaporation is high. So instead of just using distilled water ( as the water butt is empty) I’m feeding with every additional watering and I can already see they’re benefiting. I learn from you every video. Oh yes and I know I’m not over feeding now as there’s no sign of root burn. Love as always from across the pond Ricky! 😘
Chris.......I think its so important for every grower to assess their collection and feed for their environment and media, etc......I recommend low feed cause is easier for others to control their feed.....especially when learning .......also depends on the frequency of feed........with the extra calcium......you can up the feed more.....thanks.....

Whew, that's a heat wave! I'm in the 80's and I'm not happy. It feels like it's 100 degrees. I've been spraying my orchids in the afternoons. They have been drying out so fast. Yes, your phals looks very happy. It's pretty much growing season for me. Feed, feed, feed. Thanks for sharing Rick and Take Care!!
Holy cow Rick, the growth on your plants amazes me. I haven't had the chance to watch any videos for a while and I can't believe the growth since last time. How often would you water, if it doesn't rain, since your pots will hold moisture for 4 or 5 days. Do you still water with your fertilizers everyday or just when the pots start to dry. Susan.....Im amazed as well.....the high temps, the sunshine, the breeze....they are loving it.....Im feeding 3-4x a week.....more if its raining....around 175-180ppm........if raining hard I may bump 230ppm....but they are getting flushed as well......
.......if they are in damp media, bark or moss....and still not hydrating well.....there is something wrong.....PH would be my guess.....if in rock or stone.....let them soak for a few hours vs spraying them.....
Hi again Rick, last night when I was grocery shopping at Meijers I finally purchased 2 thermometer that show the temp. and humidity. I still have yet to find the ? I don't know what you call them for checking the ph in your water and what you do with them while making up your own fertilizers. We do have a system added to our furnace in our furnace room downstairs in the basement for adding humidity to our home in the winter time. My husband has to adjust it often. One time we had humidity coming down our upstairs walls from it. So I really don't have to worry about humidity in the winter. Just the summer when the central air is on. Can you make a list of ppm for all nutrients please?? Ive watched so many videos cant remember them all. For cal mag, better gro feed, seaweed,& kelp for the potassium and other nutrients . I will still watch videos over just need to see it write down on chart!! Please
I add it to feedings as well as foliar sprays.......foliar sprays i use to pin point certain nutrients.....more than to just feed......I use it to correct issues......vs feeding...
........Im keeping the faith that all the hard work will pay off......if they are mature enough,,,,they should be ready to bloom.....thank you for all the encouragement my friend....
Do orchids do fine outside with 100 degree wearher? I live in texas so thinking about starting my collection. Just dont know the disadvantages of having them outside
......there are pros and cons..........mother nature helps care for them with you.....they love the rain, sun and wind........but you have insects, mold, fungus, etc........your collection needs to be strong and in good health........they thrive outside....

Lots of feeding and flushing, good. Also, Roger had interesting info today validating what you say ..about someone who measured the tds orchids get in natural environment from all the rains that wash through. I'm starting to get more interested in all this, nutrients, how to feed, water, etc. At 1st too overwhelming but I've been listening and now it's sinking in! Gotta duplicate as close as possible their natural life.

Distracted again but am finally ready to consider uping P i still don't know if its needed as i dont have N-p-k on my fishtank or the marine tank salt mix lol yes you read that right. But my question is how much more are you adding in. I believe its about time i quit thinking about it and figure it out.
rick when you pot them up in gravel you put anything in it to keep moist cuz i wanna try river rock or lava rock have some nice crushed basalt rock here looks good too any help would be very nice that lady that snakeplant looks great even flowers :) thank you rick
Willem.........I dont add bark or moss to the stone......I sometimes place some on top.....but only temporary...the basalt should be fine......its a hard stone, old lava....
Wow, things are looking great! I was surprised how little ppm the seaweed/kelp has. Did you say you sprinkle epsom salts like you do the lyme or did I misunderstand you? Does lyme float when you soak or wash away with the rain? I think you've caused a national shortage on Lyme. My HD hasn't had it in the last two visits. My orchids are in growstone. When I water, I soak for an hour. Do you think a certain point (like 30 minutes), they have basically hydrated all they are going to? Thank you for always being so gracious answering of my questions. thank you Amy......let the plants tell you when they are hydrated.......they will feel different......leaves will be stiff, roots will be plump.......you will feel and see the difference after watering a few times....Magnesium (Epson).......i always mix with water ......a plant that is well hydrated " normally."......can soak for 15-30 minutes and its fine.....most of mine are fine with a 15 20 minute soak.....the kelp will do wonders for your orchids.....
Great Information, as always Rick, that's what I did, got the liquid potassium as well as the calcium......going to repot my lot this spring. Struggling to get hold of decent bark at the moment so probably going to use river stones and lava rock same has you have done.
.....you orchids will respond Debra....I love the lava rock and stones.......much easier to control my moisture in the pots.......with bark they will need more air flow....
Chris Bickley, would you belive the orchiata bark is process just down the road from me, but unfortunately they do not sell it to the public anymore. There are no suppliers in New Zealand that we can get it from, it's all sent overseas. Our orchid society is trying to negotiate being a supplier, but that could be a long way off, and I need it now.
that is really stupid of them to do that... there are only a few places that sell it here on the GC... and then some orchid nurseries are not recommending it.. but something else.. even as its touted to be the best around... will be interested to see you repot your phals/ omcids in the rock media in vids

If I was closer I'd come, bring you a cup of coffee and pick your brain and share ideas for awhile. What can you share about d_____ Vanda's? Mine grow well, nice roots, but rarely a flower. I have refrained to only keep 3 vandas because of it. Last year only 1 bloomed. So far this year NONE. I moved them off the screen enclosure to open morning sun (Florida) for a few hours then by noon the shade of the tree covers them, light shade. Yes they get the same feed program as the rest of my orchids. Any ideas you could share with all of us?? Thank you much for all your efforts!!
....lol.....Hot is a state of mind anymore.......I'm the same with Vandas....have only 3 and 1 Renanthera.....all growing well, good roots, lots of top growth......but no blooms yet.....in my case I think its age, still too young.... JMO......but....with their root growth, ( larger than the average potted orchid has), and very thick leaf cell structure.... I think they need more Calcium....as well as additional K.and magnesium, .....I think when actively growing they need a very consistent, steady, supply of food....not high amounts.....just no stops and starts...it effects their growth.......they really dont like being disturbed.......if they are growing facing one direction......they dont like being turned around...that type of disturbance.........it stalls them for several days ....I think naturally they either require or have a higher than normal hormone count compared to other orchids.....if low, they are slow to grow and stall often.....Vanda's seem to be one of the orchids that really benefit from additional kelp or seaweed supplements......they respond with vigorous root growth and much faster top growth rate....those supplements contain a lot of hormones.......Vanda's sold blooming can actually be too young to normally bloom, and forced with hormones to bloom.....then after the hormones slow down and wear off......they return to normal cycle and may have to go several years to actually mature naturally, and be able to bloom..........if that makes sense..........some coffee, we would talk for hours my friend.......one day.....
That's a great point about the forced hormones and the "store bought Vanda's" forced into bloom. I'm a bit nieve and didn't really consider that. Makes good sense. And yeah, I will admit I bust my a___ to make sure all the other orchids have all they need but the Vanda's don't always get it. Quilty! Maybe I just like to bitch about them not blooming. I'll try to do better! I've used Ray's Kelp Max the past couple years and it's really great stuff. Also a few of my other select plants get to enjoy it as well. Welp, yes we would solve many a problem over a pot of coffee. YES! one day.....
One reason I use time-release fertilizer is in order to mimic the constant wash of nutrients that orchids would get in nature.The other reason is convenience. It's just easier and faster, for me. So far my orchids have responded very well.
You're welcome! I use Nutricote 13-11-11 and although I am new to orchids so not the best judge, people appear impressed by my oncidiums' growth. It automatically stops releasing fert in the winter, picks back up in spring, so a 9-month pellet lasts me a year.
Hello Rick it’s been 90 here but the humidity is relatively high 75. It is certainly hot for me but the orchids love it. I’ve been using a higher nitrogen fertizer it’s called Norman’s optimal orchid nutrients it seems ok

Hi Rick , do you use lava rock and river rock for all of your orchids including the phals ? If so is that cause you keep them outside all summer , mine are also outside but most in bark and moss afraid of them staying too wet with all this rain we're having in louisiana !!!☺
.......yes all my orchids are either mounted or in rock, gravel or stone...........for that reason right there.......I couldn't control the moisture in them....with bark......I control everything with this media.....
Rick L. Thank you for this tour! Your emphasis on totally saturating orchids when they receive water makes sense since your orchids are not growing in moss-type (soggy) medium but rock. Conclusion. Porous rock allows for quick drainage and frequent drying periods. Is this conclusion correct? Thank you again for letting us hear your voice. You are sounding good over here in the neighboring state.
......your thought process is perfect......yes they get a lot of air flow, so they can dry fast......you can soak them to keep them very wet or let them dry more....we have control in this media.....and because we control the moisture we can feed more often........much more than in bark or moss.....its the easiest media to grow in........also the most reactive.....just takes some getting use to the watering routine.......

Rick L. This is exactly what I am learning about the wet and dry cycles. I have "RLO2" on my porch with a runnning fan set off from them. Plenty of filtered sunlight reaches them, so that is not a concern. These orchids are being watched very closely. I'm using my pens each time I mix nutrients following my notes "to-the-T." You have helped me so much I cannot thank you enough. Let us know what you are up to now that July 4th is behind us. It’s miserable here too... too hot for some of my orchids even on this covered deck... I don’t enjoy the heat this extreme so I’m sure some are stressed also. I have tried to increase the air flow. I’m so new to this I’m not confident
......outside they should be fine with airflow....unless in a enclosed porch......if they are well hydrated, they should be fine......they can only hydrate fully,... if they are nutritionally balanced inside.....What can i do to help you be more confident in your growing?.......happy to help.....
darn nice rack bros it is unusual temp here too in the 100's now here and moist😥so plants are outside 24/7 and misting shower in the morning by noon dry again

Rick L. Orchids I bought a phal at Lowes. It was in bark. I repotted it in new bark mix from Lowes. The roots were good. I have been watering with tap water without any fertilizer for a month then started feeding very little BetterGro. Then I noticed the leaves were drooping so I checked the roots and saw most were dying and the 5 very green leaves were drooping . I cut all the dead roots and was left with six short top roots. I repotted it in moss. It been like that for a month. I just started adding the lime (from your video😊) because I don’t have CalMag and have been using distilled water. The roots won’t grow and the leaves are still very droopy (not limp, yet) but green. I’ve lost one bottom leaf so far. So what can you determine from this? Any suggestion will be appreciated.
.....its a perfect example of low calcium and its killed off the roots......the bark breaks down, the ph drops, they cant absorb calcium and the roots die back....take the plant and soak it ....the whole plant....drop it in water and let it soak..add 4-5 drops of lemon juice......just few drops..no more....the lemon juice will add a tiny bit of potassium and it helps them move water thru them selves.......you can place it back in the moss after soaking.....make sure their is some garden lime in the moss.......you can mix it with water and pour it over the moss........wont hurt......let it soak for an hour in the dark.......see if it hydrates some...leaves should plump up........if it does ....repeat every day till you see roots starting......its gong to use its reserves a bit to grow.......and Phals dont have bulbs or canes for reserves....only leaves.....so as it grows it will drop a leaf..........normal.....after it has roots......you dont want it to drop leaves.....good luck.....

.........I transplant mine as soon as they come home......mainly so I dont introduce any critters or other pathogens to my existing collection.........replant in your media choice........this way you know they are clean nad ready for growing, nothing is breaking down, or decayed........Indoors I feed tiny amounts all the time.....125ppm -150ppm....45-50ppm of that would be calcium...

Do your orchids in lava rock stay outdoor during winter
……..not here...…...to cold...….we get heavy frost, and even snow on occasion...they come inside in the winter time
Hi Rick 😉 ? I live in NJ and we have been getting some really Warm weather now. Unfortunately I am not able to have my Orchids outside due too not having a balcony or a place to put them outside. Anyway Had to turn on my air conditioner was just wondering if the AC will have any effect on them because once I turn on the AC I don’t turn it off till around the end of September depending. Would very much appreciate your thoughts about having the AC on them. I am feeding them very well with all the Right nutrients they need.

Whoa! That is super warm. You do much for your orchids and it shows. Just looking at them, they look so healthy and green so many new shoots and spikes. Luv it at this time of year. Our weather here finally warmed up for the last few days. Had most of my orchids out in the shade. Except a couple burns when we went camping. Been 106-108’ with humidex up here in Ontario Canada. I’m finding my mounts need at least a good early swim, then a foliage feed for everyone except my large catts, about mid afternoon. No rain for us so I’m doing what I can to keep things hydrated. I love my cal mag feed and a good seaweed extract as a weekly routine, along with my different fertilizer and a good flush along the way. Thanks for all you do Rick 💐
.........I love to hear that routine Judy.....sounds like some serious blooms to come........try a foliar feed after dark some evening.......drench them hard.....the leaf stomata are open on thick leaf orchids like Catts, Phals, etc...more at night....they love it and suck it all up.....keep up the great work....Thanks Judy.

Hello Rick, just found your channel and subcribed, can you give me your recipe for you media mix? you may have addressed this in one of your other videos, if so my apologies , i will search your other videos for it. i have been growing in bark mix , but i want to try something like yours so i can adopt your feeding program, i live in southeastern Tn and have alot of heat this time of year also. thanks.
......welcome Clay......I use river rock, pea gravel, lava rock.....for almost all my orchids......the rest are mounted......Smaller rock in a pot...will stay moist longer than larger rock.......smaller airspace........the longer it stay damp.....larger the rock the faster it dries out........so for orchids that like more moisture....like Oncidiums.....I use smaller gravel...Orchids like Cattleya's.....that like a wet dry cycle more.....i use larger rock or stone....lava works the same way........bu its also porous and will absorb moisture like a clay pot will and give it off slowly.........that's how I match media to plants.....

I stuff a towel into the pot......so when I pop thru it doesn't get banged and broken......I use water as well...….and start with a 1/8" masonry bit to locate and start the holes.....

Your plants look better each time I see them! Your garden is thriving. Good for you. Appreciated the info on potassium. I might try that with my plants. We've been having hot days with high humidity down here in s. FL. I've been feeding calmag often. My cattleya seedlings that were ailing are starting to hydrate better and are sending up new shoots. I repotted them in small plastic pots with leca and have them in light shade with my bonsai. I thought they were going "under the hedge" as Roger says, but now they look like they are surviving. So Happy about this. And, I have finally figured out how to get phals to grow for me. All the videos I've watched and the research I've done have made a difference. I think I understand what type of care they need now. Hope you enjoy the 4th, your family and garden. Thanks for your videos and info sharing. It does make a difference.

I’ve followed the general info 1/4 of recommended feed quota for water culture orchids since I started but found that Ive been starving my orchids and although they’re fine quite a few have stuck. I’m already happy with my garden lime cal mag, and I’ve also started to fertilise at the recommended dose. I’ll see how they respond but my gut instinct tells me this is right, they’ll take what they want but can only do that if it’s available. Our temperature in the U.K. is high at the moment and water evaporation is high. So instead of just using distilled water ( as the water butt is empty) I’m feeding with every additional watering and I can already see they’re benefiting. I learn from you every video. Oh yes and I know I’m not over feeding now as there’s no sign of root burn. Love as always from across the pond Ricky! 😘
Chris.......I think its so important for every grower to assess their collection and feed for their environment and media, etc......I recommend low feed cause is easier for others to control their feed.....especially when learning .......also depends on the frequency of feed........with the extra calcium......you can up the feed more.....thanks.....

Whew, that's a heat wave! I'm in the 80's and I'm not happy. It feels like it's 100 degrees. I've been spraying my orchids in the afternoons. They have been drying out so fast. Yes, your phals looks very happy. It's pretty much growing season for me. Feed, feed, feed. Thanks for sharing Rick and Take Care!!

Holy cow Rick, the growth on your plants amazes me. I haven't had the chance to watch any videos for a while and I can't believe the growth since last time. How often would you water, if it doesn't rain, since your pots will hold moisture for 4 or 5 days. Do you still water with your fertilizers everyday or just when the pots start to dry. Susan.....Im amazed as well.....the high temps, the sunshine, the breeze....they are loving it.....Im feeding 3-4x a week.....more if its raining....around 175-180ppm........if raining hard I may bump 230ppm....but they are getting flushed as well......

.......if they are in damp media, bark or moss....and still not hydrating well.....there is something wrong.....PH would be my guess.....if in rock or stone.....let them soak for a few hours vs spraying them.....
Hi again Rick, last night when I was grocery shopping at Meijers I finally purchased 2 thermometer that show the temp. and humidity. I still have yet to find the ? I don't know what you call them for checking the ph in your water and what you do with them while making up your own fertilizers. We do have a system added to our furnace in our furnace room downstairs in the basement for adding humidity to our home in the winter time. My husband has to adjust it often. One time we had humidity coming down our upstairs walls from it. So I really don't have to worry about humidity in the winter. Just the summer when the central air is on. Can you make a list of ppm for all nutrients please?? Ive watched so many videos cant remember them all. For cal mag, better gro feed, seaweed,& kelp for the potassium and other nutrients . I will still watch videos over just need to see it write down on chart!! Please
Samantha.....Im feeding around 200ppm at the moment........125-130ppm is Better Gro, 50ppm is Calmag, and the rest is Kelp/seaweed.....

I add it to feedings as well as foliar sprays.......foliar sprays i use to pin point certain nutrients.....more than to just feed......I use it to correct issues......vs feeding...

Do orchids do fine outside with 100 degree wearher? I live in texas so thinking about starting my collection. Just dont know the disadvantages of having them outside
......there are pros and cons..........mother nature helps care for them with you.....they love the rain, sun and wind........but you have insects, mold, fungus, etc........your collection needs to be strong and in good health........they thrive outside....

Orchids thank u rick, ill give it a try, i have 6 at the office, but we keep it at 70s and the cielings are high and they are exposed to about 3-5 hrs of indirect sunlight from sunrise so conditions are favorable there it seems, love how green yours are so ill experiment outside soon, thanks so much

Lots of feeding and flushing, good. Also, Roger had interesting info today validating what you say ..about someone who measured the tds orchids get in natural environment from all the rains that wash through. I'm starting to get more interested in all this, nutrients, how to feed, water, etc. At 1st too overwhelming but I've been listening and now it's sinking in! Gotta duplicate as close as possible their natural life.

rick when you pot them up in gravel you put anything in it to keep moist cuz i wanna try river rock or lava rock have some nice crushed basalt rock here looks good too any help would be very nice that lady that snakeplant looks great even flowers :) thank you rick
Willem.........I dont add bark or moss to the stone......I sometimes place some on top.....but only temporary...the basalt should be fine......its a hard stone, old lava....

Wow, things are looking great! I was surprised how little ppm the seaweed/kelp has. Did you say you sprinkle epsom salts like you do the lyme or did I misunderstand you? Does lyme float when you soak or wash away with the rain? I think you've caused a national shortage on Lyme. My HD hasn't had it in the last two visits. My orchids are in growstone. When I water, I soak for an hour. Do you think a certain point (like 30 minutes), they have basically hydrated all they are going to? Thank you for always being so gracious answering of my questions. thank you Amy......let the plants tell you when they are hydrated.......they will feel different......leaves will be stiff, roots will be plump.......you will feel and see the difference after watering a few times....Magnesium (Epson).......i always mix with water ......a plant that is well hydrated " normally."......can soak for 15-30 minutes and its fine.....most of mine are fine with a 15 20 minute soak.....the kelp will do wonders for your orchids.....

Great Information, as always Rick, that's what I did, got the liquid potassium as well as the calcium......going to repot my lot this spring. Struggling to get hold of decent bark at the moment so probably going to use river stones and lava rock same has you have done.
.....you orchids will respond Debra....I love the lava rock and stones.......much easier to control my moisture in the pots.......with bark they will need more air flow....

Chris Bickley, would you belive the orchiata bark is process just down the road from me, but unfortunately they do not sell it to the public anymore. There are no suppliers in New Zealand that we can get it from, it's all sent overseas. Our orchid society is trying to negotiate being a supplier, but that could be a long way off, and I need it now.
that is really stupid of them to do that... there are only a few places that sell it here on the GC... and then some orchid nurseries are not recommending it.. but something else.. even as its touted to be the best around... will be interested to see you repot your phals/ omcids in the rock media in vids

What cha going to do when it gets hot? LOL! Great video Rick. I have been unsure of how often to use the kelp. So this helps. Thanks. If I was closer I'd come, bring you a cup of coffee and pick your brain and share ideas for awhile. What can you share about d_____ Vanda's? Mine grow well, nice roots, but rarely a flower. I have refrained to only keep 3 vandas because of it. Last year only 1 bloomed. So far this year NONE. I moved them off the screen enclosure to open morning sun (Florida) for a few hours then by noon the shade of the tree covers them, light shade. Yes they get the same feed program as the rest of my orchids. Any ideas you could share with all of us?? Thank you much for all your efforts!!
....lol.....Hot is a state of mind anymore.......I'm the same with Vandas....have only 3 and 1 Renanthera.....all growing well, good roots, lots of top growth......but no blooms yet.....in my case I think its age, still too young....
JMO......but....with their root growth, ( larger than the average potted orchid has), and very thick leaf cell structure.... I think they need more Calcium....as well as additional K.and magnesium, .....I think when actively growing they need a very consistent, steady, supply of food....not high amounts.....just no stops and starts...it effects their growth.......they really dont like being disturbed.......if they are growing facing one direction......they dont like being turned around...that type of disturbance.........it stalls them for several days ....I think naturally they either require or have a higher than normal hormone count compared to other orchids.....if low, they are slow to grow and stall often.....Vanda's seem to be one of the orchids that really benefit from additional kelp or seaweed supplements......they respond with vigorous root growth and much faster top growth rate....those supplements contain a lot of hormones.......Vanda's sold blooming can actually be too young to normally bloom, and forced with hormones to bloom.....then after the hormones slow down and wear off......they return to normal cycle and may have to go several years to actually mature naturally, and be able to bloom..........if that makes sense..........some coffee, we would talk for hours my friend.......one day.....
That's a great point about the forced hormones and the "store bought Vanda's" forced into bloom. I'm a bit nieve and didn't really consider that. Makes good sense. And yeah, I will admit I bust my a___ to make sure all the other orchids have all they need but the Vanda's don't always get it. Quilty! Maybe I just like to bitch about them not blooming. I'll try to do better! I've used Ray's Kelp Max the past couple years and it's really great stuff. Also a few of my other select plants get to enjoy it as well. Welp, yes we would solve many a problem over a pot of coffee. YES! one day.....
One reason I use time-release fertilizer is in order to mimic the constant wash of nutrients that orchids would get in nature.The other reason is convenience. It's just easier and faster, for me. So far my orchids have responded very well.

You're welcome! I use Nutricote 13-11-11 and although I am new to orchids so not the best judge, people appear impressed by my oncidiums' growth. It automatically stops releasing fert in the winter, picks back up in spring, so a 9-month pellet lasts me a year.
Hello Rick it’s been 90 here but the humidity is relatively high 75. It is certainly hot for me but the orchids love it. I’ve been using a higher nitrogen fertizer it’s called Norman’s optimal orchid nutrients it seems ok

Hi Rick , do you use lava rock and river rock for all of your orchids including the phals ? If so is that cause you keep them outside all summer , mine are also outside but most in bark and moss afraid of them staying too wet with all this rain we're having in louisiana !!!☺
.......yes all my orchids are either mounted or in rock, gravel or stone...........for that reason right there.......I couldn't control the moisture in them....with bark......I control everything with this media.....

......your thought process is perfect......yes they get a lot of air flow, so they can dry fast......you can soak them to keep them very wet or let them dry more....we have control in this media.....and because we control the moisture we can feed more often........much more than in bark or moss.....its the easiest media to grow in........also the most reactive.....just takes some getting use to the watering routine.......

Rick L. This is exactly what I am learning about the wet and dry cycles. I have "RLO2" on my porch with a runnning fan set off from them. Plenty of filtered sunlight reaches them, so that is not a concern. These orchids are being watched very closely. I'm using my pens each time I mix nutrients following my notes "to-the-T." You have helped me so much I cannot thank you enough. Let us know what you are up to now that July 4th is behind us. It’s miserable here too... too hot for some of my orchids even on this covered deck... I don’t enjoy the heat this extreme so I’m sure some are stressed also. I have tried to increase the air flow. I’m so new to this I’m not confident
......outside they should be fine with airflow....unless in a enclosed porch......if they are well hydrated, they should be fine......they can only hydrate fully,... if they are nutritionally balanced inside.....What can i do to help you be more confident in your growing?.......happy to help.....
darn nice rack bros it is unusual temp here too in the 100's now here and moist😥so plants are outside 24/7 and misting shower in the morning by noon dry again

Rick L. Orchids I bought a phal at Lowes. It was in bark. I repotted it in new bark mix from Lowes. The roots were good. I have been watering with tap water without any fertilizer for a month then started feeding very little BetterGro. Then I noticed the leaves were drooping so I checked the roots and saw most were dying and the 5 very green leaves were drooping . I cut all the dead roots and was left with six short top roots. I repotted it in moss. It been like that for a month. I just started adding the lime (from your video😊) because I don’t have CalMag and have been using distilled water. The roots won’t grow and the leaves are still very droopy (not limp, yet) but green. I’ve lost one bottom leaf so far. So what can you determine from this? Any suggestion will be appreciated.
.....its a perfect example of low calcium and its killed off the roots......the bark breaks down, the ph drops, they cant absorb calcium and the roots die back....take the plant and soak it ....the whole plant....drop it in water and let it soak..add 4-5 drops of lemon juice......just few drops..no more....the lemon juice will add a tiny bit of potassium and it helps them move water thru them selves.......you can place it back in the moss after soaking.....make sure their is some garden lime in the moss.......you can mix it with water and pour it over the moss........wont hurt......let it soak for an hour in the dark.......see if it hydrates some...leaves should plump up........if it does ....repeat every day till you see roots starting......its gong to use its reserves a bit to grow.......and Phals dont have bulbs or canes for reserves....only leaves.....so as it grows it will drop a leaf..........normal.....after it has roots......you dont want it to drop leaves.....good luck.....

Hello Rick, how should I feed indoor orchids and should I change the plastic cup with dirt that new orchids come in from a box store?
.........I transplant mine as soon as they come home......mainly so I dont introduce any critters or other pathogens to my existing collection.........replant in your media choice........this way you know they are clean nad ready for growing, nothing is breaking down, or decayed........Indoors I feed tiny amounts all the time.....125ppm -150ppm....45-50ppm of that would be calcium...
