  • Ponte de Sôr is a Portuguese city in the district of Portalegre, in the Alentejo region and in the Alto Alentejo sub-region, with about 8900 inhabitants. It is the third largest city in the district of Portalegre. It is the seat of the municipality of Ponte de Sôr with an area of 839.23 km² and 16691 inhabitants, subdivided into 7 parishes. (Foros de Arrão; Galveias; Longomel; Montargil; Ponte de Sor; Tramaga; Vale de Açor). The municipality is limited to the northeast by the municipalities of Gavião and Crato, to the east by Alter do Chão, to the southeast by Avis, to the south by Mora, to the southwest by Coruche and to the northwest by Chamusca and Abrantes.
There are references to these lands, dating from the end of the 3rd century, in the reign of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus, as part of the Roman military route between Olissipo (Lisbon) and Mérida.
In the Middle Ages, the bridge over the Sor stream collapsed, bringing isolation to the village. In the reign of D. Sancho I, in 1199, the Cathedral of Évora granted the first charter to the town. During the reign of D. Duarte, at the time of an outbreak of plague in Lisbon, the Court took refuge in this municipality.
In August 1514, it was granted a new charter by D. Manuel I.
The origin of the city's name is due to the existence of the Roman bridge over the Sor stream, which is the ex-libris of the municipality.
Of the main historical monuments, the 19th century bridge over the Sor stream stands out; the Mother Church, from the 17th century, rebuilt after a fire and featuring a beautiful wrought iron altar in the sacristy window; the Chapel of the Lord of Souls; the old Town Hall building, built in 1886; and the former Cereal Milling and Rice Peeling Factory, today a modern cultural center where the Municipal Library, the Municipal Historical Archive and the Arts and Culture Center are located - an art exhibition center.
The city of Ponte de Sor has a cinema-theater, with excellent conditions, with "Art Deco" architectural lines.
Ponte de Sor cinema-theatre. Architectural work in Art Deco style, located in the city of Ponte de Sor, at Av. Manuel Pires Filipe, next to the Campo da Restauração Garden.
In the municipality of Ponte de Sor, but outside its urban core, there are, for example, the Igreja da Misericórdia de Galveias, classified as a Property of Public Interest; the Church of Misericórdia Montargil or the Chapel of Santo António de Montargil.
It is also advisable to visit, in the city of Ponte de Sor, the modern and very pleasant Riverside Zone.
At an economic level, the cork sector stands out above all, and there is also a flourishing aeronautics sector, such as the French company DynAéro, the Portuguese group G Air Group and the Tekever Group's unmanned aircraft factory.
