Soloing is a matter of getting your feelings to come out through a guitar's strings. Lots of people have technique but few have the ability to make a guitar cry or emote their feelings.
Age 58 beginner. This video is just what I needed. I am struggling with being able to get the solo to not sound like a scale and this video allowed to move thru the scale posistions up and down the fretboard and sounded better looking at the minor pentatonic scale in this manner. It really was exciting to play last night after using this method! Didnt feel like guitar practice and it was fun.A video on intro level of how to create simple phrases would be great .Your efforts are greatly appreciated Rusty! Thank you!
I'm no teacher but I practice wrong for over 10 years been playing over 20 years now and learn something everyday what clicked for me besides a video like this nice gentleman put out was about 5 years ago I came across the 7 modes to a scale really gave me a better understanding of the neck so when I see a demonstration like this I have better understanding than I did the first 10 very horrible years of playing guitar I basically had to almost start over. Again, I'm not trying to teach you this gentleman clearly is the teacher just wanted to share my story of practicing wrong can be painful. Thankfully, at 54 years old, I'm starting to appreciate what I've learned and somewhat satisfying but never completely satisfied lol. I never met a guitarist that said well I learn everything there is to know on a guitar think I'll move on to something else😁 should I live to be a 100 I'll still be looking at guitar lessons tricks or hacks. Good luck, never give up and I hope playing music brings you joy that's what it's all about.
You snatched my head back that time! You started off a riff with a tremolo feeling and I wet my pants. The education is right here, all, I need to do is drink.

As Rusty mentioned in the video about the 3 fret by 3 fret boxes make sure to bring up a chart of all 5 Pentatonic box shapes (without the blue note) to eliminate confusion (you can add it back in when you play) and study them on your own. Make a note of how the 3 fret steps in each shape go together and always run in sets of three side by side: as in you would play fingers One-Three * One -Three * One-Three (except for one shepe) and how the 4 fret steps are always together in a paired set of strings. As in you would play fingers One - Four * One - Four | There are some Rut Busting patterns you can come up with with these subsets and pairs and a bit of thinking and creativity.
You are the best... the best instructor. I am tired of them who are just talking without showing. And you are also an amazing guitarist🙏! Thanks so much! ❤
I left a comment for you early-on stating that I felt it better to first learn the major scale - I now realize I hadn’t learned enough about soloing in general - I’ve excelled more in the past few month since finding you and built upon the minor pentatonic scale - You just don’t know what you don’t know. Thanks Rusty!
Each scale is a tool. So definitely keep your options open. But the structure of the pentatonic scale has been used by countless players over the years. Thanks a lot Kevin. Talk to you soon buddy.👍
I know of one high level teacher who starts all students on this Blues Minor Scale. It's the lynch pin of a literal thousand rock and metal songs not to mention the blues. Also in case you don't already know: if you take the Major Scale and knock off the 4th and 7th note you end up with Pentatonic Major and the kicker... the Pentatonic Major scale pattern is exactly the same as Pentatonic Minor. If you know the 5 boxes or sets of Pentatonic Minor you also know the 5 sets of Pentatonic Major so if you just add that 4 and 7 back in... Wa La... the Major Scale.
Great stuff Rusty. When you first showed us this some time ago, I began practicing it every time I picked up the guitar...even on the acoustic, which also works great. At first it was very mechanical and hard to make it flow as you do, but with time and practice, gradually the licks and melodies come.....they do!! This isn't a 'quick fix', like everything on the instrument isn't. But with time, patience, practice and persistence, it DOES pay off handsomely. Thank you for helping me to enjoy the guitar more each day :)
Very good to hear from you my brother! I’m happy that that scale is starting to flow. You’re right, persistence is what we need! Sounds like you’re moving forward man. That’s exciting! Hope you enjoy your weekend! Thanks 👌

More great content. It's wild how you can take what's right under my nose and show me so much so quickly. You're really gifted at teaching. (and playing, of course).
I made a comment like that recently on another channel. In the early 80's growing up on a farm as a teen I had a Guild (sister to a Gibson SG) and a Yamaha Amp 4X12 (loud) and I would send away for booklets and cassette tapes called 'The Metal Method' by Doug Marks from California. In a few weeks I would get some rhythm, lead and licks booklets and do my best. Rusty's teachings and some of these other easy to use resources would have been heaven sent back then.
@rustysguitar5143 Where can I get this backing track or did you lay it down yourself? ..Great lesson by the way, I've already had a play over a different track and wow it's made such a difference..thanks man 👍
The same 5 notes in a different way … yes this will help you a lot to gain control over shapes and boxes on different positions over the neck …. I think a very nice eye opener for those who are struggling with the pentatonic…

Great advice Rusty. This just dawned on me the other day before seeing this. The best way to not get stuck in the boxes is to never get into them to begin with. Lol. Stay on this diagonal as your fallback backbone and break out side to side when appropriate for the classic licks double stops etc. or to play (match) a non tonic chord. Add in the two missing diatonic (4,7) tones by ear, as you feel them. Arpeggiate the chord tones occasionally. Love this stuff.
You’re right, Tom! It’s almost like we are programmed to start with that first position and so many people just stay there! Thanks for checking out the video! Have a great week👍

Isn't it funny how different teachers can present the same information yet with one it clicks and you totally get it and with another you leave scratching your head wondering why you watched the video? Been there as well sir, Rusty is gifted at making it plain and helping intermediates stuck in ruts.
It's almost like you're watching me thru my phone, because every upload seems to be exactly what I'm working on 😂 This lesson really helped me, just like every lesson before. You're the best Rusty!
I’m so glad I could help Ryan! I just pick topics of things. I wanted to learn early on. Just trying to capture that classic blues rock sound! I really appreciate you watching my videos! Have a great week man 😎
improvise solos and find your way is how i did it, at some point you'll be flying over the board trying out stuff and just come up with melodies by accident and the ones you mistake can be pretty happy little accidents you can then work into your repetoire, just like that blue note and try to force yourself to go up the strings rather than all the way up the neck, because you'll find that descending the licks becomes easier when you finger them nicely, i find that when you're just slding up the neck on the same string it sets you up for shitty descends, so knowing out where you can put the simple 2 semitone and 3 semitone intervals of the pentatonic box does help navgating the fretboard a lot sometimes when improvising and you're drawing a blank, you need some filler stuff to fall back on , that's where i just poop my 3 semitone intervals over 2 string pentatonic stuff as i try to come up with something. as a metal player i know my flat 5th all too well of course, we do 0-1-6 riffs all day also, practice rhythm. good solos require good phrasing, and phrasing is ultimately mostly rhythm guitar, knowing how long that note needs to ring and all that rhythm ofcourse includes picking dynamics too, that is the lionshare of the dynamics in most solos with some overdrive/distortion, if your rhythm is off, your solos will always sound a bit sloppy, if you have good rhythm you can make anything sound good (seriously, anything) then i memorize that theme and try to build it out throughout a solo to make it a bit more coherent :D
No problem rusty! I appreciate all you do! You always reply back! You always make guitar practice so much fun and never stressful I was so stuck in loop but with this video alone! I have learnt so much and it's really working for me daily I salute u rusty thank u sir!! Just something about what u do! That no other people on here does! U haven't forgotten how to teach or show beginners/intermediate players how to start from the beginning unlike other people that just show off? But dont really explain what they are actually showing u! If that makes sence buddy! Anyway i wish I had u as a mentor as I would be one hell of a player!! Many thanks to you?

Thank you once again for the way you explain how to use the information in the lesson. Know I am sounding like a broken record. I've seen and learned this exact information/idea before, now I understand how to use it! Looking forward to starting to implement it. BEST AND PEACE
Hey Chuck! It is important to be confident to use these ideas that’s for sure! Thanks a lot and enjoy your weekend👌
@@rustysguitar1 you too have a great holiday weekend!
@@chucklutter7399 Thank you 🤛
Isn't it funny how different teachers can present the same information yet with one it clicks and you totally get it and with another you leave scratching your head wondering why you watched the video? Been there as well sir, Rusty is gifted at making it plain and helping intermediates stuck in ruts.
Thank you, sir, this is very useful and effective. It's crazy how we all look at the fret board in a different way
Yes! They probably all look at the fretboard differently. I’m glad the video was useful! Enjoy your weekend.👍
Have a great week man 😎
Thanks Ryan 👍
I love your guitar sound, very crispy
Thanks a lot, Bobby! I appreciate it👍
Excellent thank you 😊
I appreciate that Steve! Thanks buddy😎
Top stuff Rusty. Thanks for everything you do. Graham. Liverpool
Greetings from Chicago! Thanks a lot for checking in. Talk to you soon Graham. 🤛
Great lesson, super helpful.
I’m happy to help! Thanks so much👌
improvise solos and find your way is how i did it, at some point you'll be flying over the board trying out stuff and just come up with melodies by accident
and the ones you mistake can be pretty happy little accidents you can then work into your repetoire, just like that blue note
and try to force yourself to go up the strings rather than all the way up the neck, because you'll find that descending the licks becomes easier when you finger them nicely, i find that when you're just slding up the neck on the same string it sets you up for shitty descends, so knowing out where you can put the simple 2 semitone and 3 semitone intervals of the pentatonic box does help navgating the fretboard a lot
sometimes when improvising and you're drawing a blank, you need some filler stuff to fall back on , that's where i just poop my 3 semitone intervals over 2 string pentatonic stuff as i try to come up with something.
as a metal player i know my flat 5th all too well of course, we do 0-1-6 riffs all day
also, practice rhythm. good solos require good phrasing, and phrasing is ultimately mostly rhythm guitar, knowing how long that note needs to ring and all that
rhythm ofcourse includes picking dynamics too, that is the lionshare of the dynamics in most solos with some overdrive/distortion, if your rhythm is off, your solos will always sound a bit sloppy, if you have good rhythm you can make anything sound good (seriously, anything)
then i memorize that theme and try to build it out throughout a solo to make it a bit more coherent :D
Great lesson❤❤
Thank you so much
Thank you! And you’re welcome👌
Finally someone that makes things easy and fun to practice. Thanks for this great lesson. Im all in with you
I am happy to help Gary! Thanks for checking out my lessons👍
Thanks
Thanks so much, Paul! I appreciate this support to my channel! This is awesome buddy 👍
@@paulyoung4781 Thank you Paul! You are so eager to learn! That makes it fun and exciting for me also! I appreciate your support to the channel and have a great week👌

Good stuff Rusty, I also use this idea in a major context by changing the arrangement of the 3rd which switches the pattern, but the same concept. Have a great holiday weekend.

Just love your lessons Rusty. Thank you for your generosity.
I’m happy to help Steve! And you’re very welcome buddy😎
Great lesson, thanks Rusty. Too bad RUclips wasn’t around when I started playing 39 years ago when I was 12. Couldn’t afford lessons so I learnt a lot from tablature back then. Thankfully I stuck with it because I love guitar and it is one of the best stress relievers for me. It’s very therapeutic and takes me away from this crazy world so I play at least an hour or 2 every day.
Liked and subscribed and I will be checking out more of your videos.
Take care
You’re right, Brian, we struggled as teenagers trying to learn whatever we could find. And the older I get the more I love to play also! Thanks for subscribing to my channel! Talk to you soon buddy👍
