As far as I know they have to be identical hardware and identical firmware. I have no idea if the generation matters since I only work with virtual machines. my intuition tells me no but that is definitely something that I would contact their technical assistance center and ask.

Unfortunately I cannot share them. If you have a support contract through Fortinet, you can go to support.Fortinet.com and download any kvm vm and get the same 15 day license as I use in my videos. if you do not have a support contract I'm pretty sure they're floating out there somewhere on the internet. I personally stopped using eve-ng once they stopped being open source so all of my labs are now in gns3. I'm planning on redoing my videos once gns3 2.2 comes out. Either way I wish you good luck!
Hi Fabio Francia, if you have a support contract, you can get a free license through the support portal. Actual VM licenses with UTM features are available through a Fortinet sales rep. The prices are relative to the amount of resources you want to throw at it. And thanks for the compliment. :-) I just do these for my students so I don't think they are anything special.

I would physically tun off the VM you are trying to failover. you can also remove the heartbeat links to force a failover too.
