Kursk, 1943. That event where the Soviets learned of the German invasion before hand, and prepared their troops into defensive positions further back, before they launched their offensive, trapped them, and encircled them completely. Welcome to a repeat of history. I just can't believe NATO walked right into that one.

9 platoons make a battalion some battalions have up to 5 companies..a US infantry battalion has 18 platoons

For all those who are confused about questions of how many soldiers there are in battalion, during this year 2024. it is obvious that UAF have lots of battalions that suffered so many losses, and were not capable of repopulating the number of soldiers in same, so there is many battalions on the line of combat that have 30-40% of the troops, and that is why number of companies or platoons in the same are not real numbers that one battalion usually have.

Ok, but if in a battalion remain 30 man, despite the name, the force is one platoon.
In Ukraine a battalion has 40 or 50 vehicles and around 400 troops. That is the normal size that has been in place since the start of SMO in 2022

3 platoons is not a battalion. Takes at least 3 platoons to make one company. And a company is about 90 troops. A battalion is up to about 1000 troops

3 squads (7 to 10~ men) , makes a platoon.
The company has 3 riflemen platoons PLUS a support platoon with light MG or light mortar, 100 or ideally 120 men in total.
3 riflemen companies PLUS a Support company ( mortars, heavy MG and A/A of small range) makes a Batallion of around 500 men.
I served in a NATO country Army..and that's how it was.
Different countries have different military structures. A US battalion is not the same as a Ukrainian battalion in strength and structure.

The situation in Kursk reminds me of when I was a child on summer vacation in Cape Cod. I loved to go out into the Bay when the tide was out and build a sand castle and then see how long it would last once the tide came in. Of course I knew ultimately the ocean would win and there was no chance anything I made out there in the sand would last against the rising tide. The Ukrainians encountered little resistance when they took Kursk and for a time it looked impressive but ultimately there was never any hope they could actually remain there once the Russian Tide came in. Well, I guess it was fun while it lasted!

And 1 general support company.
The hq and general support company will have less men than the rifle and rifle support companies.
the Kursk operation is a failure and a significant strategic blunder for the UAF, they have wasted some of their best units that could have been used to slow down the Russians in the Donbas, just plain ol' bad leadership.

When three platoons make up one 'battalion' - usually three _companies_ of several platoons at dozens of soldiers - one is loosing the war.
A battalion is supposed to have a thousand men in order to cover a certain amount of territory in a firing line - if that number shrinks down to mere 300 men of three expanded platoons, two thirds of the originally assigned front line are not covered, anymore effectively - forming gaps, armies can be marched through...

Much of what Dima is labeling “Ukraine control” is, charitably, a grey zone with some Ukrainian presence. The entire front line is being driven by Russian maneuvers. Ukraine is either holding on while under fire or retreating. Where Russia chooses to advance they do so. Every week brings less resistance. I understand the desire to be “accurate” when showing a battle map - but as the old expression goes: “the map is not the territory”.
There’s only so much information that can conveyed by a map of who supposedly controls what territory at any given time.

Dude, learn something about military organization and order of battle. A rifle unit starts at the squad level, 10-12 men. Can be broken into two fire teams, A and B. Next you have the Platoon, usually 40 men, full compliment, plus platoon leader, platoon sargent. Next is the company, usually 200 men strong, plus company commander, executive officer, first sargent, company clerk, and guidon corporal. Less than 210 total. Battalion is next level up, anywhere from 800-1000 strong depending on which country, at battalion level you have much more support and staff positions. Next level depends on country and unit function. WW2 we, USA, had regiments, 3 to an infantry division. Division level gets much more complicated. The rifle company would also have a weapons platoon machine gun, mortar and such and modern technology has probably added a few other functions I'm not familiar with. Bottom line, there are many, many platoons in a battalion, you really need to work on your understanding of military unit organization charts.
