  • Watch the history of the Chi-Chi's restaurant franchise, a video by Smartyflix. Started in 1975 in Richfield, Minnesota by Mexican restaurant magnate Marno McDermott and investor and former Green Bay Packers wide-receiver Max McGee, the Chi-Chi's restaurant was a story of highs and lows, ending in a dramatic crash with one of the worst hepatitis A outbreaks in restaurant history. This is their story...

Ty for this there is surprisingly very little about chi chis on here which really surprised me. It's almost like people just wanna forget they existed.

I remember the early morning mandatory Sunday meeting when Family took over. It was such a huge deal to management. Our sales and occupancy hadn’t been an issue in Ohio as of yet. Our Chi Chi’s made money! I was a high school busser and bought a car. I found another opportunity before the scallions fiasco but still miss this place. I loved the Tex mex food. I truly loved the people I worked with. I only did restaurant work with chi chis and red lobster in my teens. Chi Chi’s is the only one I speak fondly of.

Don't forget that fried ice cream as well!

I had an ex who cooked at chi chis! The fried ice cream is so easy to make. What you do is take corn flakes, cinnamon, sugar and put it all in a big zip lock back. Crush it all up real fine. Take Somme ice cream and force it into the shape and size of a baseball and put it in the bag and shake it up. Then put the ice cream coated ball inn the freezer for an hr to get it real hard. Then drop it in some boiling oil for about 20 -30 seconds. Then remove. Cover it with honey or chocolate. You will think you are right gback at chi Chi's for happy hour.

Cannot over emphasize how hard and frozen solid you gotta get that ball of ice cream after you cover it with the sugar and stuff. An hour prob wont cut it in a-lot of freezers. You want it to get like ice cream that's too hard to scoop and you'd just sooner give up than mess with it.

I have to say,I admire the professionalism of the narrator. There's no way I could say "Chi-chi's" without giggling.

It's quite a silly word! It makes a lot of sense in context though, knowing that it was a nickname for the wife of one of the founders of the restaurant!

I lived only 18 miles from the Hepatis C outbreak in the Beaver Valley Mall (Beaver County) Monaca PA in 2003. They got sued and filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in 2004.

Don Pablo's was really good! I had one nearby that had a really cool fountain, and they had really unique chips and salsa. Sadly, they've been gone for well over 10 years now.

As a teenager, I worked for Chi-Chi's for two years (1985 - 1987). Great memories. The food was phenomenal and it was before its time. The food was sensational! What most people don't know is that Chi-Chi's was started by an ex-NFL player. That ex-NFL player hired all ex-NFL players and managers. Big mistake! All of the General Managers and high paying executive positions were ex-NFL players that had ZERO restaurant experience. My GM was a former Dallas Cowboy who was abrasive and nasty. That culture permeated within the industry and Chi-Chi's was finished...despite a very loyal and lucrative restaurant industry that would have survived but not for very poor corporate decisions.

I'm wondering if the El Torito chain you mentioned, and the El Torito logo you show (with Bucharest on it) are actually the same? Quick Googling doesn't SEEM to show that they are, but I could be wrong.

Max McGee fell cleaning gutters. His wife said he had the resources to have others do that dangerous work. But he insisted.

While I think that this is a very good video; I took great exception to one minor detail, One would think that the person who is providing the variation would at least have the foresight to check his pronunciation of the word "Monaca".
