I always thought it was funny that the Great War in the Fallout lore happened on October 23rd - Mole Day - because something weird always happens to me every year on that day. One year my dog died, another I won an iPad in a raffle, another I shattered my wrist, etc. The creators of Fallout just so happened to pick the one day which holds great significance to me in a lot of ways

The Brotherhood of steel and a few surviving scientists from the Institute, used all the tech the Brotherhood has horded all the years to create a time distortion machine. You go back to Friday October 23, 2076. One year before the Great war to stop the nuclear war before it starts.
A synth is chosen because a human would not survive the trip. In the past you try to stop the war by peace or harsh means. (just a thought. It's fun to dream)

Great. After the Fallout 76 trailer I now realize (can't believe I didn't think of it before) that the Great War took place one year after the Tricentennial, and that pretty much changed the entire feel of the game atmosphere for me.
I just noticed this today. The war started in 2077. So how dose fallout 76 make sense now. This is something I hope has been sorted out now.

July 4, 2076: Tricentennial of the United States.
October 23, 2077: Great War.
October 23, 2102: Vault 76 opens, Fallout 76 begins.

It actually seems very likely that Vault-Tec would have launched the first bomb to signal the other nuclear-capable factions or nations of the Fallout universe that an atomic war had commenced. As for which country Vault-Tec launched their bomb against, if they had one and actually did so, I would assume China to be the culprict. The reason for this would be to rally the Chinese forces for a final confrontation against the United States, perhaps in a last ditch effort to secure Alaska's Petroleum supply for themselves. As for why China didn't simply launch their own bombs first, if my theory is correct, it could be due to the Cold War effect, in which each side fears the other's power, for their entire nation could be completely wiped out and leveled within mere minutes of a plane flying in and dropping an atomic payload atop any location of a country which posessed either a strong governmental or military presence there, in an attempt to cut off the head of a nation and leave them to crumble without a government or military to fight for its citizens. Once China had launched their bombs as a result of Vault-Tec, the United States would have retaliated, and, being in a long and uneasy Cold War with the Soviet Union for over a century in the Fallout universe, they too would've seen this as an imminent attack, and launched their bombs as well. I assume that the rest of the world followed this course of actions as well as each nation launch their payloads against their bitter enemies in an attempt to settle their rivalries once and for all, apparently winning their own respective wars.
As for why Vault-Tec would launch the first bomb to begin with, let's think about this thoroughly. First off, we know that many Americans did not heed the air sirens on the day of the Great War, assuming that it was another bomb drill. This could possibly mean that a large number of American citizens did not take Vault-Tec or the threat of nuclear war seriously, giving Vault-Tec a reason to launch the first bomb, force citizens to take the threat seriously, quickly take shelter in the Vaults for Vault-Tec's experiments, and make their goal of total atomic annihilation a reality. More so, if they were able to control a large amount of the remaining American population within their Vaults, they could have a very strong grasp over the citizens and country in terms of influence, even more so prior to the Great War. This is also because, if a control Vault were to lead torwards a prosperous settlement such as Vault City, then the settlers of that city would come to revere Vault-Tec, giving the corporation a large amount of power in that settlement, which in itself is already a powerful settlement to begin with, given Vault City's advanced medical equipment. Putting all of this together, and potentially even more evidence not yet discovered ot discussed, I am convinced that Vault-Tec launched the first nuclear bomb to initiate the Great War and fufill their alterior plans by finally beginning their Vault experiments on those who survived the Great War's nuclear onslaught upon America.

1:40 I do not think there is a question who launched first really. In Fallout NV you will find a terminal at Black Mountain Radio on the Broadcast tower terminal saying, "Oh my god. It's actually happening. We have reading across the board of launches happening everywhere. They must've thrown everything they had, and it looks like we didn't hold back either. The computer says we have 2 minutes until the first missile drops." First when they say "They must've thrown everything they had, and it looks like we didn't hold back either" this is implying we responded to the attack and this is speculation, but i would assume based on the time they see the incoming missiles impacting China launched first and the US responded with a full retaliatory strike. Additionally in fallout 4 the ~~SPOILER AHEAD~~ Chinese Nuclear Attack Sub off the coast indicated they attacked first. All of this also occurs after the US defeats China on its mainland and retake Alaska. So the US had nothing to gain from launching first. I do agree also that Vault-Tec can be assholes and might have done it.
I know old comment but this just showed up on my reccomened feed for some reason.
That terminal entry actually doesn't prove who fired first as it's based on when that station detected those launches. The operators assumed it was China but they were also panicking while making that entry so All they most likely saw was nukes in the air from both sides once they detected them.
Remembered the war started on the east coast and moved westward meaning that station would have had not immdientky detected the nukes as it most likely was watching for the area it was in so d idnt actually detect the incoming nukes till they were actually headed towards the West coast and it's area of coverage.
By that time the war was already started with all nuclear powers firing everything so it would look like China fired first from their perspective since if China retaliated they'd hit it all.
There really isn't a way to tell who fired first as all the data related has been destroyed outside of maybe Vault 0 having the answer.
Though I highly disagree with this videos claim that Vault Tec fired the first nuke since they were making money and hadn't completed all their vaults

I belive in FO4 on one of the terminals ingame, I belive specifically inside the Usaf satellite station Olivia, there is a log that shows the warning of incomeing Chinese fighters over the Bering. And then they move up the stages of Defcon. So technically the chinese started the war with nukes, the US and Ussr etc retaliate/answered it. That said, the US had troops in mainland China, so its not easy to say if unaware to the logs on the station, that the soldiers over there had used nukes already, forceing China to respond. Then again the Enclave had its own agenda, so they could have triggered/provoked China to go to the finalstep, without the rest of the military knowing that the US(fraction) had struck first. I think Valentine sums it up best anyway with his question "who do you think won the war?" to which he answers himself " no one I guess"

great start just a bit thrown of by the speak and spell guy, there are some great consumer priced mics though that can make these videos that much better. However presentation and cut work was great.

What I don’t understand is why the Fallout games doesn’t take place sooner?
Like Fallout 3 takes place in 2277.
Fallout New Vegas takes place in 2281.
Fallout 4 takes place in 2287.
Originally Fallout 1 was the closest to the Great War of 2077. That game was set in the year 2161. Then Fallout 76 came out in 2018 and that game is set 25 years after the Great War. So the earliest to the Great War is the year 2102.
one of these days i hope to see that bethesda and obsidian will make it so we can actually have some sort of flash back to the great war in 2077, and actually fight as one of the soldiers or something or better yet, a time machine hahaha
As part of one of the DLCs for Fallout 3, you can enter a simulation and take part in a situation in Anchorage. It's really fun and can take a few hours to get through.

It's called "The Day After" I believe. It's set in the Cold War and this time the bombs do go off.
