The Allies capturing Messina was the real timeline trigger for the removal of Mussolini and surrender of Italy. Base rules in the game, when that happens, nearly all Italian forces are removed. However, it unlocks all the German units in the gray zones and accelerates Germanies reinforcements by one turn. Hearing multiple community members say that the Allies usually win the game, we made some houserule adjustments - including keeping all Italian units operating with German units in the game. We overcompensated and removed any incentive for the Allies to trigger Italy’s surrender by taking Messina anytime before the end. We are making our own notes to update our version of the rules so we fix this for our next game. Thanks for watching & asking the question.
Im not sure if you described it in a past video, but why keep Messina as an open city? If Italy exits the war does that hurt the Allies?
