2003-2008 Japan head coach was Shoichi Yanagimoto. Since 1997, Japan volleyball went into dark era given no good players and coach, 2000 even failed to enter Sydney Olympic, the unprecedented incident in Japan volleyball history. Yanagimoto bought Nippon to Olympic in 2004 and this was his 2nd attempt in 2008.
Kurihara (24), Kimura (22), Araki (24), Sugiyama (28), Takahashi (28), Takeshita (30) and Sano (29) were the lineup players. Libero Yuko Sano award the best digger and receiver while Yoshie Takeshita the best setter.
Post-Match Commentary :
Dominican Republic with an offical staff in FIVB, there had a lot of chances to appear in international matches since 2003. But I always dislike this team as they played not consistent at all. The team style was like Cubans with good power and jump tall. But their main problem by that time was only know how to attack.
Besides, once Japan defenced their attack, Dominican will become a mess and made lots of mistakes. #18 De La Cruz & #10 Carbral were the key scorer in Dominican but this team didn't have any back row attack. #4 Nunez attack also strong. But with the simple front row attack, it made Nippon defence became easier. Japan didn't scare of strong power attack as they got two libero - #6 and #3. This tournament probably was the last time Kurihara acted as a key player in Nippon, she started fading out after new coach onboard. Dominican coach was fired after this tournament and appointed Macros Kwiek.
