gday m8. in nineteen seventy i worked on a large sheep station just out of ohura. i worked there for two years. i used to go to the cozey club on a saturday night. i used to shop at the genaral store. i now live at the bottom of the south island. the station was called hawea hills. sheep and stud angus cattle. i looked up the farm a while ago on the computar and boy has it changed.
OMG THANK YOU! This is my hometown and I felt a real rush of nostalgia as it made think of my childhood days where everybody new everybody watching this. I haven’t been back home for over 30yrs and two days ago was thinking of returning to visit the my home. Just a couple of things I will correct: the big white building which was a prison for white collar offenders was a Mens Hostel for the miners when the coal mines were operating. That place was where I got my very first job after leaving school as a waitress in 1965. One building you mentioned was a church: but it wasn’t, it was a community hall where functions were held. My daughter had her birthday in that hall and my dad used play in a band for dances, birthdays and cabarets and every other event that happened. Thank you so much for job well down your filming is great someone has good steady hands at videoing. Loved it. I will definitely follow and journey with you wherever you go cause I know all the abandon towns you will visit. You must be happy👉 tramping thru the long grass and never have to worry about snakes. 🙄🤪
55yrs ago as a young lad from PioPio High School, we'd go to Ohura to play rugby & I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nostalgic but sad to see abandoned shops & buildings! How can we breath life back into our nearly forgotten Towns??🤔
The old prison was originally the mine offices... my Dad worked on it as an apprentice carpenter in the 1950's. Later it became a 'white collar' prison & then later it housed drug dealers & pedos as well. It was much bigger when it was a prison with many out-buildings & big organic gardens with massive greenhouses. In 2005 they closed it & removed everything but the original mine buildings... it was then sold to an Iwi, who then on-sold it to a private owner... now it belongs to the Hope Foundation who are part of the Seventh Day Adventist network. It is used as a rehab centre I believe. All those 'dead' houses around it were prison owned houses for staff etc... one was being used as a Police station for years.

Who was your aunty. I went to school there, it was my hometown. And your correct in saying the prison was a coal miners hostel. It was my very first job working there after I left act in 1965. The prisoners did a great job with their gardening.
I was in prison there transferred from waikeria because of over crowding i didn't want to go but when we arrived in our van we looked at each other and all smiled JACKPOT hahaha steak eggs and chips for our first dinner there and seconds if you wanted, everything about the place was cruisy even the staff cheers for the memory bro

I was basically the last Policeman that lived and worked in Ohura, 1993 to 1995, my office was in the old laundry of the Police house, no computer... Lana's shop, Kahlil Motors was still going, the prison was over the back fence, my two kids attended the local school, we socialised at the Cossie club down the road....remember my wife was invited to the annual harvest festival...she thought that was great until we discussed it and decided that was not such a great idea, 😀 but some great people living in the town and I enjoyed the couple of years we had there, very fond memories

I live in New Plymouth and far out I didn’t even know anything about this little town out in the wop wop. I couldn’t help but feel the spirit’s of those who once lived, walked in this town. I was so fascinated to the old building that stood once, booming with people and the abandoned houses. We are going to take a day trip to visit and explore. I know myself, I’ll be crying, not with sadness but with joy exploring of what the People had left behind.
This is so nostalgic to me, I used to go visit my Aunty in ohura and I used to love it. I remember when the shops were open (well only the general store in my day) thanks for posting this brought back so many memories

I loved the derelict desertedness after the orderly nuttiness of Sweden and still do; now live with the cows sheep birds and Pudditat in the far north. Having been in NZ for quite a number of years, knowing that quite a number of small towns in NZ are remote and people left for opportunities and all shops closed so no more economic activity and became ghost towns.
Car broke down there a few years ago me and my mate slept in the car and something about this town was off but we didn’t really sleep it wasn’t the fact we were in a car it was the town very scary didn’t meet any locals tho we kept to ourselves stuck on the side of the road near town got picked up the next day by the missus tho towed us all the way to Hamilton
Im a former inmate during the early 2000s. We literally walked through the town ship to play league at local rugby field. You could basically walk out the Gates if you wanted to escape but it was that laid back you didnt want to escape. I remember 2 56 chevs full of mobsters driving into the compound to pick up one of their members. Crazy lol. I also remember 2 guys who allegedly got raped by the cook. They told the guards and they instantly became targets because they told. In jail if something happened to you, youd better do something about it or keep quiet. Even though it was looked at as being a punishable act raping someone. Telling on that person was worse. Totally forgot about this place
Hi again you are where i started working after about 4 years my boss traded a D4 bulldozer that did knot sell he put a tender with the minstry of works to work on bulldozing corners of the Waitongas the road from Ohura and the west coast i was getting married in about 6 mounths and said he would pay me more pre hour about dould i did it i stayed at the minners camp (Ohura Prision) small world smile still married to the same woman
I was in Ohura prison i can remember some of the screews stealing the food so inmates went hungry one tablespoon of mashed potatoes wasn't enough to work in the forestry
Yip was on the spot filming right here, Had all the research but no internet to read any of it so had to try memorize everything on the spot while walking around filming with my broken microphone not bad for the 17k plus views 😎

Next time you do the forgotten highway, you should visit the place where a small town used to be. Their is only a small farm/place to stay now. Sorry but I can't remember the town name but it began with a T. My gran lived there for a few years while the train tracks were being built. I visit a few years ago and they have iformation boards and pictures.

Yes they have their own law out there, very hard not to cross the line while exploring, all the residents have watchful eyes, there was a man outside the rugby grounds keeping a watchful eye on as while at the church

I drove through Ohura about 5 months ago toke my Nephew & Niece for a drive to get out of the house (From Taumaranui) told them what it was like in Late 80s early 90s they were like (People still live here?) Yes bubba (But these no shops or Police stations here!) I know 😂
Yes definitely not abandoned, this video isn't about it being Abandoned this is part of our ghost towns series of towns that are now ghost towns compared to their hay day
Alot are for sale but there's no power or phone lines super markets or shops available, or jobs available, also the roads to drive there aren't maintained so driving for supplies is hard, aslo the government doesn't offer any benefits as there's no jobs available in the town, So really buying there for most people isn't really an option, Cheers for your comment though 🙂👍
@@TheForsakenExplorerNz Yes & the prices have gotten pretty steep too... $45k for a section that floods & you probably can't build on... around $300k for house & section in flood zone... when we went there in the late '90's the council was selling off sections for $1 (+plus the rates owing on them)...
Mate, your vids are hard to watch.. You pan too fast and moving the zoom in and out fast makes watching very difficult, almost get a seasick feeling , which is a pity as i like these types of explore videos. Maybe once you sort that out i will come back to your channel.

Not allowed to build there due to being a flood plain, so probably can't get it going again.

My home town that I grew up in Ohura was an awesome place to live in back in the early 1960 , I now reside in Australia for over 48 yrs.
You had to be related to Lucy, John. They had a brother who drowned in the Ohura river. Was as always a sad time for everyone.

I stayed in the prison when it was used as a backpackers. They gave me a key to lock my cell for when i went out.
The little cart is Fiesta Fare. A Mexican food cart . A definite must stop. Michelle also runs a B&B in Ohura.

My husband lives there. His father Stan Grunberg truck coal and timber. Shops were all open .but little place back then.

And you wouldn't be able to get a building permit there.

I drove through Ohura about 5 months ago toke my Nephew & Niece for a drive to get out of the house (From Taumaranui) told them what it was like in Late 80s early 90s they were like (People still live here?)

Alot are for sale but there's no power or phone lines super markets or shops available, or jobs available, also the roads to drive there aren't maintained so driving for supplies is hard, aslo the government doesn't offer any benefits as there's no jobs available in the town, So really buying there for most people isn't really an option, Cheers for your comment though 🙂👍
@@TheForsakenExplorerNz Yes & the prices have gotten pretty steep too... $45k for a section that floods & you probably can't build on... around $300k for house & section in flood zone... when we went there in the late '90's the council was selling off sections for $1 (+plus the rates owing on them)...

Mate, your vids are hard to watch.. You pan too fast and moving the zoom in and out fast makes watching very difficult, almost get a seasick feeling , which is a pity as i like these types of explore videos. Maybe once you sort that out i will come back to your channel.
This video nearly 4 years old and was filmed on a phone.. we have a completely different camera set up now for over two years now and we film in 4K and HD so these issues are old news..
