- Sudha Malhotra, born on November 30, 1936, in New Delhi, embarked on her musical journey at a young age, spending her childhood in Lahore, Bhopal, and Firozpur. Graduating in music from Agra University, she received guidance in Indian classical music from maestros Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan and Pandit Laxman Prasad Jaipurwale.
Her enchanting beauty and melodious voice caught the attention of the renowned music director Ghulam Haider during a program in Firozepur in support of the Red Cross. This marked the beginning of her career as a child artist on All India Radio, Lahore.
Venturing into film singing at the age of eleven, Sudha's first breakthrough came with the film "Aarzoo," where she collaborated with Anil Biswas on the evergreen song 'Mila Gaye Nain.' Her versatility led her to sing in various films, including "Aandolan" and "Vande Mataram" alongside Manna Dey and Parul Ghosh.
Despite being initially labeled as a "typed singer" due to her association with children's songs and motherly numbers, Sudha proved her critics wrong. Notable achievements include the popular bhajan 'Na Main Dhan Chahun..' in "Kala Pani" and the iconic qawwali 'Ishq Ishq..' recorded over a continuous twenty-nine hours for "Barsat Ki Raat."
In an unexpected turn of events, Sudha chose marital harmony over her thriving film career after getting married in 1960. She left the film world right after recording one of her most famous songs, a melodious duet with Mukesh: 'Tum Mujhe Bhool Bhi Jaao To Ye Haq Hai Tumko...' (Didi).
Despite the hiatus, Sudha's spirit remained irrepressible, and she found solace in singing bhajans in her family mandir. This led to the creation of numerous bhajan cassettes. She also delved into ghazals, collaborating with notable directors like Jagjit Singh, Khayyam, and Jaidev.
In 1982, Sudha made a triumphant return to the film industry with "Prem Rog," showcasing that her vocal prowess had stood the test of time. Her dedication and passion for music continue to inspire, making Sudha Malhotra an enduring figure in the world of Indian music.
