  • Red Giants are a state of stellar evolution beyond the main-sequence life of a star. These types of stars are very large stars with high luminosity and low surface temperatures.

This was exciting and saddening at the same time. Exciting because it is one wonderful cosmic phenomenon; saddening because the star has come close to the end of its life.

Once a star like our Sun starts fusing helium into carbon and oxygen, that’s it. It’s doomed. It’ll shed its outer layers, and end up a mass of super-hot diamonds that slowly fades away.

When a star turns into red giant does its mass remains the same ?

    • @Cosmoknowledge

Good question! Stars continuously lose mass, since their birth, by conversion to energy. Red giants lose mass as well but not rapidly, if you will.

It all depends on their mass. They can merge to form a brighter star called a blue straggler. Maybe they can even form a black hole.

It’s hydrogen is what makes the sun so powerful with all the suns mass combined with red supergiants it would possibly create a black hole right beside earth and it would be the end for the universe

So they have observed a star using up half of it's gasses and becoming a red giant? Science is about observation and then there is guessing which is called theory. So unless it has been observed - We guess that's what it does!
