- The "weird, undignified" dance move was banned in two Australian councils, who feared it could render some buildings unsafe. The ABC looked into the origins of the dance craze, and asked teenagers why they loved it. WARNING: This clip contains some discriminatory content.

People Today: "Ugh young people and their stupid dance crazes"
Me: *Shows them this video*
That dancing instructor is the sweetest lady. She doesn't much care for the stomp, but knows it's not her place to tell people they shouldn't do it.
This could easily pass for satire.
0:12 Two municipal councils have put their FOOT DOWN. AHHAHAHHAHA NICE ONE
The innocence of this is hilarious 😂 and to think that the authorities cracked down on this daggy dance is even more hilarious 😂 😃
We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too.....
“Any old dance that you wanna do, but let’s dance!”
Makes me wonder, in 50 to 100 years, what is someone going to show online that was normal or weird to us, seem like to them!!!
There wont be the Internet in 100 years but something mind blowing, technology is moving mind blowingly fast
Planking, like that wasn’t weird 🥸
A lot of things i'm sure XD
Humanity could possibly be wiped out before then, if we don't change our ways.
Politicians: all these young people and thier thing that’s not a real dance let’s ban it
Old guy: boy this is fun
And then along came hip-hop and break-dancing and all Hell broke lose. :P
No, along came the Mod
Those damn natives!
WE'RE GONNA HAAAAAAAAVE A SURFIN' HOOTENANNY, OOOOOOOOOOOH COME ONN! 🎶🎶
I can remember dancing to disco beat in a club in Portsmouth New Hampshire and we shook the floor oh that was the funnest time of course shortly after that the building did get condemned
😅
I think I saw knee . Knee !
This looks like fun and good exercise.
Love it! Never heard of it. Love the comments in the video! Thanks for posting! 👍😁✌
The Stomp was invented at Surf Dances held at Narrabeen Life Savers club. So many teenagers would attend that they danced outside the club on the beach sand . Dancing on sand is difficult to do which is how the Stomp developed.
was not invented at Narrabeen lol!
And then a few metres down the road, and 15 years later, Peter Garrett would do an interpretive stomp to the music of Midnight Oil at the Narrabeen Antler! 😂
Imagine if the uptight lady saw someone twerking🤣
hahahahahha true
0:49 lass crackin a mean hakk
Two people in front are excellent dancers
Hilarious!!
Wonder if this is where the rockabilly bop comes from?... 🤔Looks like great fun and brilliant excercise! Also the white dress is beautiful! 😍
I'm cracking up over here imagining a scenario where someone started dancing this "forbidden" dance in a club or something and people freaking out like, Someone get that guy OUTTA here!!! xD xD
That's because you are ignorant and can't see it from outside your time and perspective
Obviously a very quiet news day.
It was actually good exercise…
What about the sharpie dance?
That ain't dancin' Sally!
It started at a picnic/dance that was invaded by ants.
A better dance routine than the rubbish that we see on the dance floors today. 🕺
The building foundations must've been made of clay if there was so much concern. SMH
Ignorance
The dance teacher manages to be sympathetic and demeaning at the same time.
Looks more like the funky chicken
The funky chicken was nothing like this. LOL
@@SoundBlackRecordings , OK Funky Rooster then ☺️
Whats the song at 0:24?
Surfin Hootnanny
The stomp originated in the outback. It's a cross between stamping out a bush fire plus taking a dump in the bush plus running behind a bush and taking a piss. You then add these 3 complex manoeuvres together after drinking a dozen fosters and there you have the great Aussie mating dance......
🤣🤣🤣
My parents had a old pub circa 1964 they were doing some form of dance caused the bar ceiling downstairs to go crazy dad had to show the red card
I agree the stomp dance should be banned in buildings, the stomp dance 💃 can destroy buildings and the floors, people can badly injured.
They're wearing "distinctive clothes"..? Looks pretty tame and usual to me.
They're all so lovely and slim!
Darwin discovered the 'stomp' on the Galapagos..
Is then when Australia got its name The Nanny cuntry
The stomp dance can damage dance floors and buildings. I agree that stomp dance should be banned. I don't like the stomp dance, it cam make building fall down and that's dangerous, it can badly fatally injured people
Then came the Bushy Walkabout, which commenced in a small dance hall in Sydney and then spread throughout the world, re-named The Madison and Line Dancing.
Does anyone might know the title of this stomp song in the disco? It sounds so pure, so stoked about it
"Surfin' Hootenany" (Al Casey-1963)
@@ScotchArsh great thanks a lot
holy crap
The two best songs to stomp to are The Strangeloves "Cara-Lin" & Dave Clark Five's "Glad All Over".
find any other videos on what the stomp looks like?
There is a first time for everything.
Bring back the stomp!
No do not bring back the stomp dance. I once heard people doing jumping Jack's and they sound like animals stampede, I saw alittle debris, I'd stand in the doorway, I was afraid 😱 that the ceiling was going to collapse
Its like goths raving
I wish they could check out a raw hardcore rave at Sydney Olympic Park.
The hakk will blow their minds.
Fr!😂
Melbourne Shuffle has more in common than a dance imported from Holland
The original Melbourne Shuffle HAHAHA
Ahh the good old Melbourne shuffle. I haven't it since the 1990s. Is it still around ?
@@jimreily7538 yes and this is stomping before the early 90s raver stomp / later shuffle
👍🏽👍🏽. Beautiful. Greetings from 🇧🇷

I finally got that Calton Banks' dance.
This is literally the origins of the hakk/gabber you'll see at the beloved Defqon
Ghost dance in America.
Mini Wiconi
What’s the name of the song at the beginning if anyone knows what it’s called please tell me thanks 🙏 👍🎶
the song is 'Surfin' Hootenanny' by Al Casey released in 1963
Start sounds like "I fought the law", before the lyrics kick-in. Makes me wonder if it was inspired by it
She said 'Apes or tribal people' haha savage 😅😅
I know. Omg, hahaha
It was a fun dance.
Bristol Stomp came from Bristol Pennsylvania.
I Love the Stomp!
Why did they ban ? It's very good dance ....
Hi Hello people having fun being happy
Can't have that
Everyone still did it 👍
@@justsandra71 Yep and more power to em ;-)
@@scottalsop4407
Yep. My cuz use to babysit when I was a toddler n we'd play mums little records n have a ball stomping around. Mum use to hang out with Little Patty, Daryl Braithwaite etc. Was great fun n don't wreck a buildings holding beams or floors... Do they think people are elephants.... 😂
@@justsandra71 Mate that woulda been grand. Them was the good days. =-)
I prefer the worm myself.
What the What!!!
I'm glad they banned the dancing 👍👍👍👍👍
BAN SEMI AUTOMATIC ASSAULT DANCING
Um 2:52?
Ahh "The Stomp" what fun, - St. Ives Stomp. Friday night on the way to Bilgola Beach, wake early on Saturday morning and hit the surf! Yabba dabba do!!
Oh the good old days when STDs were kept in secret.
That's the funniest dance I've ever seen. Hahaha
This isn't so funny now that Australia has banned all encryption.
My word, indeed!
The word of the day was " TERRIFIC !"
Dancing kept people fit & trim back in the day, people need to start dancing again to lose weight and forget about useless diets that never work...
Now humans twerk
lol
Well, I guess this band probably wouldn't be playing any gigs there back then, either:

Look at that young whippersnapper at 0:27, no respect for all the damage he's doing to the dance halls floor, no all HE cares about is himself having a good time, it's disgusting is what it is.
Nah, just kidding, I think you should do The Twist, The Stomp, The Mashed Potato too, any old dance that you wanna do.
“But let’s dance!”
I don’t think the stomp made it to USA. We had mashed potato, monkey, jerk, swim, twist, pony, boogaloo....
It not only made it to the USA, it was invented here, as part of the surfing craze of the early 1960s.
The jive
My Word!
Bruh
* Warning this video has a superfluous warning! What discriminatory content?
I assume she was referring to aboriginals
Stupid ABC is gonna say stupid ABC things... I'm surprised they didn't put a "trigger warning" because the video contained too many white people.
I think it was because she said "tribal people". I don't get it but eh
Those young hooligans!!
Still better than the sit and crawl dances that were in style for a while
The stomp dance is weird and the stomp dance can damage floors and buildings. I'm Glad they banned the stomp dancing permanetly
They didnt ban it
I would ban “Twerking” before l banned Stomping. I love the elderly gentleman at *0:28, he was adorable! 🕺🏾 💃🏻
He worked in the mines he was only 28
Bet the old chap is dead now
tribal
Not as bad as 10 year olds twerking
BAN the STOMP!
Yes banned the stomp
They did a closeup of a young lady’s tooshie! So wrong.
LOL Now we have WAP
Thank god they didn’t have the Nutbush lol
The Australian accent back then sounds different
That is why we have accents my man. The way people sound changes over time
60 years later all getting hip replacements
Haha, exactly what I thought! Hips and knees as well.
"We'll do the Surfer Stomp its the latest dance craze..." Beach Boys 'Surfin' 1961....
Wait til they see a mosh pit!
Now you're getting it, ABC! Great reporting -- unbiased, covering many people's opinions, and none of your political views snuck in. Well done!
You do realize that road does not exist .... it's all in your head no where else.
@@noproblamas2205 echo echo echo........
@@MrLunithy How do you know that what you said only exists in *your* head? I got to my conclusion by asking questions. How many right wing reporters work at ABC? Zero. How many mocking comedy programmes did the ABC ever have of Democrat presidents? Zero. Would they have one of Hillary Clinton? NO. How often does the ABC not just disagree with core aspects of the political right, but vilify them? (man-made climate change, Pro-Life, no unisex public toilets/showers, only 2 genders). Daily. Hourly. Every chance they get.
I'm sure you're on the political left, which is 100% fine, but do you think none of the above exists?
@@lilacDaisy111 So you went to every ABC office and asked? "How many right wing reporters work at ABC? Zero." sure .... yep..... you are making so much sense.
@@MrLunithy Ah, yes, I meant to say presenters/hosts. You're right and reporters don't even have much of a chance to insert their views (but when they do ... Did you see the guy who reported the US election in the US? His world was ending, poor guy). Other than that, did the rest of my points make sense?

What are kids doing for dance these days?
1:10 "MY WORD!!!" thank God that white man was offended!
Ruin dance floors haha cute
Oh those ladies spike heels did! But, the work around that is simply organize a committee raise a bit of cash build their own Rec Hall with dance floor. Charge a bit of admission rent it out even.
0:37 seconds, so camera men at that time knew how to focus on butts and appreciate good things, now they say we are pervs. 😞
Some body take me back to the old days please.
Go watch any pop singer's music video and you'll get your fix
Not good to objectify women back then, still not good now.
