Best concrete/sculptures repair video I’ve found...can easily see your grandparents DNA and craftsmanship shine through..your attention to detail is very impressive. Not sure what you do career wise but you always have the stone mason field.
Thank You! (5 Years Later) I have a beautiful ornate concrete Birdbath that has sections of it falling apart. After researching various options, I have settled on your Method of repair for this project. Wish Me Luck!
Looks great! I have an old plant stand that I rescued out of someone's garbage back in the 80's! I've used it as is all these years! Now it seriously needs attention...I was leaning towards your method but my H recommended an epoxy concrete adhesive. After going his route initially, it's still in need of the concrete. Thanks for the video!
Great job. I had my doubts about the quick-crete, I've never had much success with it, but you did a terrific job and I think I need to try it again and use a bit more patience :-) I bet your mom was thrilled, the eagle turned out awesome. Thanks for sharing....
Thanks! Patience is key, the set up time is so fast I naturally wanted to rush, but for vertical surfaces it really only gets workable past the 10 minute mark, before that it just wants to slide around. It's held up so far so she's happy.
Thank you for the tutorial, I have a turtle that froze over a bad winter, years ago. Now I will give it a try to repair. Thanks again. Your repair was perfect, great job.
This was great to see! I just inherited Snow White and 7 dwarfs concrete statues for my backyard. Two of the dwarfs are very crumbly and I wasn’t sure how to repair them. I’m going to try your method, slow and steady, one at a time :)
Thank you for sharing this video. We have a large turtle sculpture in our backyard that is of sentimental value to my daughter. The head was broken off either in moving or landscaping work soon after moving in. I think this method looks perfect for doing the repair. I will likely drill holes and use rods to reinforce and stabilize the joint. This video may resurrect a piece that I’ve been afraid to tackle for years. Thank you again!
No problem. Plus, at the time i made this I couldn't speak for the longevity of the repair, but it has been almost exactly two years and is still going strong.
fantastic and so easy to understand. I seen on where he added the bonding agent to the cement. i like the idea putting it on the item instead. I am nervous with the idea of the concrete statue company that makes saying they use bondo.
Thank you, I have a bird bath and two large ducks that were my Grandma's. About 40 years ago one of the ducks lost a chunk of his neck. BTW Someone took a picture of me riding one of the ducks when I was a toddler about 60 years ago.
This is beautiful. I also acquired a goose that my grandmother used to dress for every season that was on her front porch and it sat at my recent house and due to some irrigation issues it started to get weathered badly and cracking and I want to fix it for my kids all sit on this thing especially son lol. You know in 40 years from now he comments something similar haha
Joy how did you go with your angel wing ? I have my mothers one to fix, it has crumbled and a piece broke off. I’m in Australia so hope I can find similar products to fix it.
You did a fantastic job on the statue. I'm repairing Cherubs to put on top of a cement fencing where it was originally. This video is so helpful because I can now see that it does set quickly but will stay in place fairly well. Mine is missing pieces so I will need to fill in areas and maybe work on several steps. Thank you!
Buy clear mate Brick/Cement sealer and apply several coats over the entire statue and it will last a much longer time. Behr , Valspar and Homax all make good products.
Can you make a video about making a cast of what’s left of my aged quatrefoil? It fell and shattered a corner. I hope a mold will replicate the holes and cracks in the plaster or concrete they used. Also how can you tell what it’s made of? You are so talented!!
You want to mail it to me and I fix it? Can you send me some images of it, so I can determine if it's something I can do. Honeybadgerwoodworksllc@gmail.com
Great job well done, I have three small concrete sculptures to fix and paint, another person said to coat it with water based latex paint primer. you agree?
I prefer oil-based paints for anything outdoors. They are just more durable. A contractor friend of mine said to use Thompson Water Seal (they make a variety for Masonry) it you want to clear coat it. I don't think my mom ever put anything on there, so it's still holding up without a finish.
That sounds reasonable. It's more expensive but for outdoor pieces I spend the extra money on UV resistant paints and clear coats. Nothing outside will last forever, but it does help with longevity.
I bought an angel statue for my mothers grave. It has a tiny chip on the wing, but it's noticeable. I want to fix it as it's right on the top of the wing. I'll try and fix it with quick fix cement. From what I've seen it's important to wet the statue to help it bond. Is the bonding agent necessary or will wet cement dry on on it's own?
Held up great, still looks good. I wish they let you post pictures on here because I get asked that a fair amount and it would be cool to post picture updates.
If it was me, I would drill into both broken ends and attach a dowel (dowel material depends on the original material) to reattach both. At the end of the video you can see the original eagle had a hole for the dowel already. Any sort of sculpture or carving like this with protruding parts will have an inner armature to reinforce the structure. Some sort of glue might hold up for a while but depending on the size of the broken piece gravity and weather will most likely break a glue joint over time. Porous materials like plaster and cement are hard to glue in general as is. The material just absorbs the glue.
What did you mean about wetting the concrete so it doesn’t dry too quick? How wet? With a sprayer? Hose? Damp cloth? Have a birdbath pedestal to repair.
Not soaking wet, but damp. If you put the new mix onto of the dry statue it will suck all the moisture out of the new mix. Dampening the old statue avoids this situation.
Yeah, looks the same as it does at the end of the video. I even told my mom to coat it with a water seal after everything cured, and I don't think she ever did. So looks like that without any seal on it as well.
Looks the same. I was honestly expecting over time for some cracks to form where the the new mortar met old, but that bonding agent was money and I haven't had an issue.
I wish you'd have shown the tools you used for carving the features into the cement. I am going to try and repair a garden statue that fell apart into several pieces. The intricate design restoration is what concerns me - we'll see how it goes. Nice, instructional video.
They aren't specialized tools, it is a cheap set of clay/sculpture tools I have had for years. You can get something similar on Amazon for like 10.00. The one I ended up utilizing the most was a wooden clay tool with a pointed and tapered end, similar to a thick knife blade. Something like that you can make out of a scrap piece of wood.
repaired some of mine using Hydraulic cement, found it started hardening fast, but was able to sculpt areas if I worked quickly. Painted them white to match color, but a year later, the cement failed, literally crumbled. Wondering if I just had a bad batch of cement that i purchased...
@@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks Mine came in a plastic tub. Maybe I worked it too much, but then again, some of the foundation patches I did on my house failed too. may try a fast setting mortar next time. Know it will harden slower, but know mortar also can expand and contract decent with changing temps

Beautiful job!!!!!!! You’ve given me great instructions and confidence to try my own repairs. Thank you!

Really beautiful work. The repairs you did are such that it looks like the statue simply aged. You have to sort of really look to see it was repaired.

How often.do you have to wet in order for cement to dry properly?
What a gorgeous job, very talented..

I am very impressed by your work. You have artistic talent. You could build up a business doing these kinds of things.

Amazing and inspiring job!...
Just a small detail, it isn't needed but:
Isn't the eagle supposed to have nostrils for breathing?
Thanks!
In real life yes, but I was copying someone else's work and they obviously did not care about realism.

LIke a glue? An epoxy rated for cement.
@@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks Thank you.

At 4:49 i noticed your miniblinds in window looked hammered. Having raised kids and cats, Ive seen this phenomenon before, it does eventually go away.
That's my parents house and the blind is actually made of sticks, hence the look.
How has the fix hold up after these many years? Thanks in advance. Great video
Still looks the same, no majority cracking, and everything is still in place.
Excellent !! It’s in your dna 🧬 I have a Saint Anthony Statute my landscaper moved and it fell over breaking the head off. Any suggestions?
Do you still have the head?
Great job!
What if you have the broken off part. Can you used adhere it back on? Thanks looks good.
I watched another repair video that said you can use epoxy resin for repairs like that.

Could u use clay?
I would not use clay on concrete, for starters there is no good options for adhesive those two products.
how did your repair hold up? curious need to do a repair also
Yeah, looks the same as it does at the end of the video. I even told my mom to coat it with a water seal after everything cured, and I don't think she ever did. So looks like that without any seal on it as well.
@@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks Thanks that sounds awesome.
Great job. How is it now?
Looks the same. I was honestly expecting over time for some cracks to form where the the new mortar met old, but that bonding agent was money and I haven't had an issue.
How long did it take to dry after sculpting it?
It sets up in 15-20 mins, at that point it is hard to the touch. It doesn't not fully cure to full strength for 28 days.
Great job just what I needed! Thank you

Awesome!
